Chapter I

Marillion's pov.

"Come on! Hurry up hurry up!" I cried into the phone.
"Calm the fuck down, you'll have plenty of time to jump around when we get there," was her answer.
It was the day. Today was the day. I just couldn't wait.
"I can't! I just can't! Hurry! What the fuck are you doing anyway?" I panted between skips.
"Tying my boots. And stop that. You're wearing yourself out. You'll end up exhausted."
Okay, so maybe I was obsessing over them. Maybe just a little. But I had the right to. They were my favorite fucking band.
"Oh, come on! How many fucking laces have you got on each shoe? I've been waiting for hours!" I whined.
"Alright, alright, I'm ready, I'm out the door in five minutes. See you outside," she sighed, with a little hint of amusement in her voice. I could tell she was smiling.
I hung up and readjusted my shirt. My legs were so shaky I could barely stand. I had been waiting for this day for so long. The day I finally saw them in concert.
"Okay, let's go," I heard behind me.
I hopped into my best friend's car and finger-brushed through my hair for the hundredth time. What, I wanted to look absolutely perfect.
"Ready? Let's go then," Melony said, starting up the car.
I looked up at the time on the dash. 8:47, the day had just started.

After a couple hours driving, we finally got to the train station. I could definitely not stay calm. I pulled out the two train tickets and handed one to my friend. She seemed a little excited.
"Uh, May? It says seat 12 here. What's your seat?" she asked, stopping the car.
I squinted at the letters on the piece of paper I was holding.
"Uhh... Seat 15. That's not right, I asked for seats next to each other," I said as I stepped out, pulling my luggage behind me.
"Well they made a mistake. Don't worry, we'll find a way." And with that she winked.
I swear, this girl was fucking calm when I was losing my shit. We went into the station. The train would leave at 12.30 pm and it was I only 11.47. Okay, I guess I had kind of rushed things. But she didn't say anything about it. She understood, that's why she was my fucking best friend.
"Hey, do you know anyone in New Jersey? If we're staying - what was it? a week or two? Might as well have someone to fuck around with."
She was right. Because we were the worst at making friends, but if we didn't try we would probably end up alone just the two of us.
"Sorry, but no. We'll have to try and socialize I guess." I sighed.
"Oh myyy. We're fucked Marillion!" She covered her face with her hands, whining over dramatically.
I giggled and slipped my arm through hers.
"Hey, come on! Let's get some coffee!" I offered.
There was a Starbucks a few feet away. Thank god, I needed to relax with a warm drink.
"So, are you excited?" She asked as we sat down to a table, drinks in hand.
She had a huge smile across her face.
"Are you fucking kidding? Of course I am! Never been more excited!" I breathed, almost choking on the sip I had just taken.
She laughed softly and took a piece off the cookie in our plate.
"I just wish it was easier to get there," she sighed. "And less expensive."
"Yeah, I know. But I think it's totally worth it."
My smile had gotten wider by the minute. I just couldn't wait any longer. I checked my watch, the impatience growing wider in me. I could feel it itching every part of my body. 12.17. The concert was in eight hours. Eight fucking hours, that was a lot of time. After we were finished drinking, it was time to get to the train. We still hadn't figured out the seat problem, so after we put our bags away in the luggage case we sort of wandered around the 10-20 aisle. The first seat we came across was the 12th, Melony's, and in the one next to it a guy was sitting alone.
"Excuse me," I cleared my throat and spoke as politely as I could. "I think there's been a mistake... Um, I asked for a seat next to my friend's, but they gave me the wrong one. Would you mind switching with me? So we can sit next to each other? They gave me seat 15." I said softly.
The man looked up and I could get a better look at him. He was kind of young, maybe in his twenties. He had dark black hair and a small goatee.
"Sure," he smiled, getting up. "Oh, hey, nice shirt."
I looked down to see the dookie cover. I mumbled a thanks, but i'm not sure he heard.
"Is that why you're taking a train to New Jersey? You going to their concert tonight?"
"Yeah, um, it's my favorite band, my um first concert..." I stuttered, my cheeks getting warmer.
Oh, I was so bad at handling conversations with strangers without blushing.
"Hey cool, I'm going too. I'm Matt by the way," he said, picking up his stuff from the seat.
"Well, nice to meet you. I'm Melony and she's Marillion," Mel said, smiling. Thank god my best friend was there to rescue me. "Hoping to see you tonight, then."
"Yeah, sure. Will you be staying? I'm joining a bunch of New Jersey dudes, I'm actually from there. We could hang out maybe."
I nodded shyly, and waited until he left before sitting down in my seat. Melony sat next to me and put her head on my shoulder.
"This is gonna be a great summer!" she cheered.
"I'm sure it will," I whispered. "But right now I'm crashing.."
I closed my eyes and fell asleep, lulled by the starting train.

I slowly woke up a few hours later. Mel had fallen asleep beside me and the train was as quiet as a whisper. I sat up straight and looked at my watch, seeing the numbers though blurry eyes. I managed to read 14.36. We were more than halfway there. I looked into the big cage on my lap. The two kittens were fast asleep against their mother, purring soflty. I hoped they stayed as calm until we got there. I couldn't wait to settle into our hotel room and take a long warm bath. I rummaged through my bag and pulled out a wrinkled book, my oldest copy of The Catcher in The Rye, the one I always took with me on trips - along with a few others, of course. I was quite a reader. I flipped through the pages and stopped at the spot I had left off last time I opened it. After a dozen minutes of intense reading, I was pulled out from my thoughts by a little voice.
"Excuse me," it said again. I looked up. "You have kitties in there?"
In front of me was a little girl, ten years old maybe, pulling shyly on the edges of her skirt and looking down at her feet.
"You have kitties in there?" she repeated. I nodded with a small grin. "Oh, wow, can I look at them?" she said, taking a step closer.
I nodded again and she bent down, peering into the little entrance. A smile appeared on her face as she slipped a finger through the bars.
"Oh, they're adorable... What are their names?" she giggled, looking up at me.
"The two small ones are Zero and Aura. They're barely six months old. And the big one in the back is Mnemosyne. She's around eight. I've had her since I was nine. Those are her kittens." I answered, smiling.
"Oh, you're so lucky. I really like cats alot. Well, thanks. See you around, maybe." she waved and skipped away.
I turned to Melony, who had woken up.
"Hey um, remember the plan?" She said sleepily.
"Uh, yeah I think. When we get off the train we take a bus to the hotel, settle down and wash and all, then we get something to eat and then it's time for the gig. Right?"
"Yeah that's it. But after the concert we're changing to another hotel, remember? We've only got one night in the first," she sighed.
"Right... How far is the second hotel?"
"About an hour from the first. I wonder if I should rent a car."
I thought about it for a moment. But I don't think my brain was functioning correctly.
"I don't think you'll need one. They've got loads of buses here." I finally answered.
"I guess you're right... Oh hey, this is our stop!" she gasped, jumping up.
I grabbed my case and bags and went for the exit door. We were there. Ah, finally.
