If You Marry Me, Would You... (Frerard)

Chapter 5

It's been a week since Gerard talked to Michael.

He tried his best not to let his feelings show, because then Frank would start asking questions, the questions Gerard wanted anything but to answer.

But even though he did a pretty good job at hiding his concerns and fears from Frank, the younger man wasn't stupid. He could sense something was wrong ever since he woke up in the morning and found Gerard still asleep, face red, eyes swollen, twitching and squirming with fear.

But he didn't say a word. He didn't mention it, didn't ask about it, and didn't push it. As much as the older man was concerning him by being distant and cold, barely talking or eating, the last thing Frank wanted was to make him upset again.

The two got to know each other better. Even though Gerard was acting sort of off, they got to talk more and learn new things about each other. Not too much, but they managed to figure out what they had in common, what they liked to eat, watch, they even had those late night talks about things that seemed odd, like Trump being the president or how the world was too big for any of their brains to understand.

And then they would just fall asleep facing each other, somehow always waking up back to back. And they still kept their distance. The last thing Gerard wanted was to have another nightmare about Michael and accidentally hit Frank. Things were bad enough for him already.

Speaking of Michael, the younger brother hadn't bothered him again since their meeting in that alley. It was actually a bit scary for Gerard. Because as he knew his brother, Michael disappearing did not mean leaving the older man alone. It had to be something more, something worse. Because it was Michael.

But he would only find out when his brother is back again. And that was something Gerard really wasn't looking forward to.

Frank grew to like the older man. He found out that he cared about him more and more. He'd been concerned about Gerard, he wanted to help him, to see what was wrong.

He just wasn't sure how Gerard would react to that. The man clearly didn't like talking too much about himself, and harshly refused to talk about his past.

Frank was determined to help, though. He was getting emotionally closer to the elder with every passing day, and would be lying if he didn't say that he liked him a little more than he should.

"Are you okay?" he asked Gerard one time, when they were lying in bed in the middle of the night. It had been silent so far, each one in his own thoughts, as usual, when the younger man came up with the unexpected question.

Gerard, who had his back to Frank, tensed a little at the sudden voice, and considered how to answer it for a few minutes.

"Yes, I'm fine," he replied quietly.

Frank wasn't sure it was a good idea, but he really wanted to know. It hurt him to see the man who protected him this bothered all the time.

"It's just that you've been so distant lately, and I was thinking maybe-"

"I'm fine, Frank" Gerard said sternly, but managed to keep his voice calm. As much as he didn't want this interrogation on his shoulders, he didn't want to snap at Frank. And he was too tired to argue anyway.

"Gerard…" Frank tried again softly.

Gerard sighed inside himself and turned around so he was lying on his other side, now facing the man beside him.

"I really am fine. You don't have to worry about me," Gerard said. He felt bad for lying to Frank, but it was for the younger's own good. He didn't deserve to be scared so soon, or ever. Gerard just wouldn't let that happen.

"Oh, okay. I just… you know, I wanted to know if there was anything on your mind. I don’t want you to be upset without being able to help you."

Gerard sighed quietly. He had so much going through his head. What should he say? What should he tell Frank, if at all? Should he let him know that he was indeed bothered by something, or keep him under the safety of unawareness? It felt complicated, more complicated than it should have been to him.

"I'm okay," he whispered eventually, and then turned back around to face the other way.

Frank sighed silently. Gerard was lying. It was clear as daylight. But he shouldn't push the man, because that would be wrong and it wouldn’t help.

Yet, how could he ignore it? Gerard was troubled, he was anxious for some reason, he was scared. And Frank didn't like it at all. Gerard didn't deserve to suffer.

He found himself shuffling closer to the other man. Gerard could sense it, didn’t say a word though. Frank probably thought he was asleep.

After a few more minutes, the smaller man was so close Gerard could feel his soft breath on his back. But he didn't move. He wasn't even sure what the other will do next, so was definitely surprised when a warm arm snaked around his waist carefully and rested on his stomach.

Gerard was stunned. He could barely remember the last time someone has done something like this to him.

Sure, he slept with a lot of people in his life. He was close to others, felt others, touched them, tasted them, hell, he was inside of them. He had needs, too, but none of those other people had ever held him so close afterwards. They usually just left.

He reminded himself, though, that they were all just stupid one-night-stands, and he was done with these. He didn't want to have meaningless sex anymore. His last time was about three months ago, and that was it.

And then his mind wandered back to Frank. He didn’t even sleep with the man. It was something weird. Why would Frank want to hold him? Was it to protect Gerard? Or to make himself feel safer?

Gerard had no idea what it was, or what was the meaning of this, but the one thing he knew was that it felt good. It felt nice and comforting, he needed it.

So he didn't move. He let himself fall asleep to the touch of the younger man and the feeling of him around him, because for once, it made him relax. It made him calm, and freed him from his troubled mind.

It made him forget.
