If you say, goodbye today

10 year old Gerard and 9 year old Frankie were still as close as ever, but one thing was making them drift apart. A girl. A girl that looked to be the same age as Gerard visited her grandmother every week in the hospital, and Frank seemed to have a bit of a crush on her. Of course that made Gerard VERY jealous. What was so great about her? What did Frankie see in her and not him? Every time she walked past their room with her mother Frankie would wave shyly over to her. That only made Gerard even more furious. So the past few times she had walked past, Gerard had made a huge effort to make sure Frank was not paying attention to her, but was paying attention to him. It only worked a few times though because he quickly caught on after that. One day Frankie decided that he would talk to the girl hoping she would like him, even though he was in a hospital.


The next time the girl walked past Frankie stopped her. "Hi, I'm Frank" he said looking down at his shoes. "I'm Anna" the girl said smiling a big, toothy grin. "How old are you?" He asked. "I'm ten" "oh..im nine." Frank said upset that they weren't the same age. "Hey! It's ok! We can still be friends!" She said cheerily. Frank looked up. "Oh ok! You don't mind that im in the hospital?" He said. "No not at all!" Frank smiled at her."Well I have to go see my grandma...see ya around." She said as she placed a small kiss on his cheek. His face turned a shade of red as she skipped away. Gerard stood there in the doorway, shocked at what he had just seen. Frankie was HIS. He was going to find a way to get him back. "Gerard, did you see that?" Frankie asked, proud of himself. "Yeah I did" Gerard said angrily stomping away.


Anna kept coming every week and each time they would hold hands and then when she had to go, she'd place a kiss on Franks cheek. Every time, Gerard just got more jealous, until one day Frank came back, tears in his eyes instead of the usual smile on his face. "What's wrong Frankie?" Gerard asked concerned for his friend. "A-Anna's grandma is getting out of the hospital so she's not coming to visit anymore and her mom said she couldn't hang out with me anymore since I could 'hurt' her." He said, tears streaming down his face. "Hey Frankie it's ok. You can sleep with me in my bed tonight if you want. We can even watch a movie." Gerard suggested. "Yeah, that would be fun." He said smiling.


That night the nine year old was cuddled up into Gerard's side as they watched a movie. Even though Frankie was still clueless to his crush on him, it was nice to have him back. The nurse came in the room and saw the two boys huddled up together and smiled. "Frankie you need to take your medicine" the nurse instructed. "O-ok" he said back yawning. He took his medicine and then climbed back into bed with Gerard. "I'm tired" Frank said, yawning again. "Go to bed Frank" Gerard said softly as he kissed the top of his head. Frank was already fast asleep so he didn't notice. Gerard smiled as he looked at the peaceful expression on the smaller boys face as he softly breathed in and out.
