Second Nature

The Little Vampire

Frank’s P.O.V

“Can I ask you something?” Blake’s voice rang out as I settled in the bed at the side of her after putting Iron Man 3 on. “Pretty sure you just did.” I smirked down at her as she glared back playfully at me.“Why don’t you call us by our true nature? I’ve noticed you never say the V word, it’s always ‘our kind’ why is that?” She smiled as she traced patterns onto the bed sheet with her finger. I pondered my answer for a while, no one had ever bother to point that out to me, or maybe they never noticed, but Blake did and now it was my turn to be honest. “I think it’s because that word associates fear into so many people’s hearts. In the human world if they knew we existed then mass chaos would ensue, but they are rather happy with the notion of glittering sparkling versions, or films and other fiction to be wrote about us, usually with them being the hero and wronged by us. Back when I was a younger that word had so much positive weight behind it, it wasn’t something to be feared or ridiculed but something to be trusted and respected and with the world changing so did the meaning.” I shrugged as she studied me carefully smiling. “Well back in England before I was turned there was this film called The Little Vampire. I used to watch it every night before bed, I learnt to swing my yo-yo like they do, I even tried the ketchup trick but I don’t like the taste.” She laughed as she was telling me, “It was my favourite film but you guys don’t seem to sell it over here and the shipping is extortionate for a kids film.” She shook her head fondly. “Let me tell you though if you’d have seen this film you’d be saying the V word a lot more. They’re badass in it.” She smiled biting her lip with her little fang.“Do you miss England?” I blurted out, mentally cursing myself for being so blunt about it. She fidgeted as much as her healing leg would allow her without her causing too much pain. “Depends what you mean I suppose.” She said after a while, “If you mean the country, then no. If you mean my family, then of course.” Her eyes flicked towards the film, “I always knew I never wanted to stay in England, just like I always knew leaving my family would be hard, but we still talked and so on. I’d never go back though. Not being what I am.” She looked back up at me slowly, “that’s where you’re lucky, you was born into vampires you never have to see them die or suffer where as I do. That’s why I often push Anna away. It’s not because I’m moody, it’s because I’m selfish and scared for when it happens.” She smiled sadly up at me before resting her head against my stomach.

We stayed silent for a while after that, both of us undoubtedly pondering on what was just said but not caring to voice it. Up until this point we hadn’t talked about what happened three weeks previous, the fact that this young girl who was sent here to kill me had just saved my life and risked her own in the process. Every time I went to bring up the subject it was as though she knew and instantly did something to change the subject. I was determined to thank her in some way, had she not have risked herself there is no way I would still be alive, I can readily admit that I cannot fight whatsoever. “So I was thinking maybe we can eat downstairs tonight? I think I’m up for walking.” She smiled her best smile up at me. Up until now she’d been on complete bedrest until her muscle has repaired itself.“I don’t know, it’s up to Anna.” I said unsure and desperately not wanting to get on the bad side of the human. Despite the fact we’re the killers that girl can give us a run for her money with the sheer determination. These past few weeks have really made me question who really is protecting who. “Please do not ask Anna. She will say no.” I tried to look away from her but she grabbed my face so I couldn’t as she put on her big eyes and saddened lip. “I’ll be good I promise.” She smirked as I puffed out a fine.

I left her to get changed making sure there was a maid standing outside to hear for any issues. I’d come back about fifteen minutes later to the maid still stood there, looking bored. “You're dismissed.” I smiled at the young girl who Gerard had hired many months ago. She gave a slight nod before walking back down the corridor. “Blake you ok in there?” I knocked on the door leaning on it. There was no answer to that knock or the next three I did, deciding she could have fallen or anything I opened the door slowly as I noticed her hobble out her en suite in a light floaty dress, that didn’t cling to her legs but covered the wound. Her hair was freshly washed and had gone to its wavy natural state and she’d put the faintest of black liner under her eyes. “Wow” I coughed, “I mean hey, I thought you had fallen or something so I let myself in.” I laughed out stroking the back of my neck nervously.“Sure sure.” She smirked before holding her arm out, “so come on grandpa put that gentlemen training into practice and come help me walk.” She laughed out as I ran over to her linking her as she put more that half her weight on me. “Your the one walking like she’s old just saying.” I said as I escorted her out of the room and to the top of the staircase as she stopped. “I don’t think I can do it.” She whispered looking up at me. The look she gave was as though she was a puppy who couldn’t get up the doorstep and needed help. I gently lifted her up, so she was in my arms bridal style as she clung on tight, half expecting me to appear in the dining room. Instead I set off slowly step by step down the stairs making sure my footing was perfect and not dropping her as she looked at me stunned.“It makes you feel sick doesn’t it?” I smiled, smug in the fact she thought I’d forgotten as we reached the bottom of the stairs and I set her back down carefully. “Thanks.” She blushed as I offered her my arm again.

We had all just sat down for our dinner when one of the maids walked in unannounced. “Mr Iero.” She looked at me quickly, something in her eyes telling me there was something not right. “You have visitors.” She bit her lip as I stood up making my way over to her as she reopened the door and following me out. “Who is it Edith?” I asked as I followed her to the reception area fully aware I wasn’t expecting anybody. “It’s your parents sir. There,” she paused at the door looking up at me, and thats when I recognised the emotion in her eyes, “angry sir.” She whispered, fear dripping from her words.
