Meet me on the battlefield

Chapter 19 Gerard's POV

*~*Gerar'd POV*~*
The the two picked up the injured man, whose eyes were closed. They were both on the shorter side, the man between them was clearly the tallest of the three, and they had trouble carrying him all the way to cam. The injured one would cry out in pain occasionally when the other two would stumble, and I did nothing. I felt heartless, but that was my job. If I wanted to get out of here and see my new child, I needed to be heartless.
Soldiers were back at camp already, having the medics tend to wounds, and some lost soldiers looking for their friends, or directions. I kept my eyes forward, especially when I could feel people's gazes turned towards us.
"We got us some prisoners!" One person hollered, clearly excited. There was a lot of cheering as the three people in gray moved between the sea of blue.
"Keep moving," I growled when one of them stopped, the one I had been holding earlier. I was taking them to General Christopher's tent, where I hoped he was, or if not, I would send someone to go get him. Either way, I was going to speak to him tonight.
We stopped outside of the tent, and I nodded to Jared to go in first, he was the one who was good at making entrances. I pushed one of the ones carrying the man inside, and he stumbled forward, barely catching himself before he fell. I entered in behind them, coming out from behind them, just until I was next to them, still able to see any possible escapes they could try.
"What do we have here?" General Christopher asked from his little stool, where he appeared to be nursing a bloodied foot. "Three Confederate soldiers?"
"Yes sir," I said, an eye on him and an eye on the three of them.
"Who's responsible for them, and why did you bring them to me?" Christopher asked, looking the group up and down with his eyes.
"Way is, sir," Jared said before I could utter a word.
"Is this true?" Christopher asked, turning his gaze towards me.
"I guess...? I made the call to bring them," I said, a little unsure of how his mood was at this point.
"Why did you bring them?" he asked again. I waited a second for Jared to cut in, but all he did was look at me to speak.
"This one," I said, grabbing his arm and squeezing until he yelped, "said they had information."
"Yes, information," the kid said, and I squeezed his arm to get him to shut up before he started rambling. I needed to show some leadership authority to these three before they started thinking they could sneak past me. The one in the middle of them groaned again, in pain, and I rolled my eyes. He seemed to be over dramatizing it. When Pierre got shot in the shoulder, he was back on his feet in minutes, and I didn't even notice he had gotten shot until later.
When I looked over at the general, his face was expressionless. "This one, is he injured?" he asked, pointing to the one in the middle.
I nodded. "He appears to have been shot in the shoulder. He was crying when we got them." I half expected the man to protest, no man I had ever met would willingly admit or accept the fact he had been crying, even myself, and I was a sensitive man.
"Lock them up, you're on guard duty with them for the time being, Way, and find out what 'information' is sparing their lives. Get Toro to look at his shoulder, I hear they're his specialty."
"Yes sir," I repeated, and Jared helped me push the three out of the tent. The one in the middle was slipping down, and I hit the small of his back the butt of my gun. He fell, and Jared and I impatiently waited for them to pick him back up.
"You want to take them, and I'll get the chains and Ray?" I asked Jared, who nodded. He could easily take down all three of them, especially since the dark haired one seemed so unwilling to leave the injured one's side.
The medic tent was busy, and so was the area around it. There were people sitting outside, waiting for some medical care. I debated on stepping inside the tent, or not, to look for Ray. Around me, there were sound of people groaning in pain, and I realized how lucky I was that not just once, but twice, I'd made it out of a battle unscathed, and we had won both battles. I wondered if I was a good luck charm.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone moving towards me, a tray in his hands. I turned to see Ray, looking relieved as we made eye contact.
"Gerard, you made it out! Again!"
"Can't get rid of me that easily," I said, grinning. "Hey, I need to steal you for a couple of minutes."
"What for? You don't look hurt," Ray was clearly trying to look for blood spots on me but didn't find any, or not any big ones that required worrying about. "Is Jared hurt again?"
I shook my head. "Jared and I brought in three prisoners-"
"That's why everyone was cheering a few minutes ago!"
"-yes, and one was injured. His shoulder was shot. General Christopher told us to get you on it, yes he specifically said you. Yes, you can feel honored, Ray," I said, seeing the grin on his face. He was the best doctor at this camp, and he was clearly ecstatic that the leader of the camp thought something similar to that.
"What about these men, though? Do I just drop everything to help the enemy?"
I shrugged. "You don't need to do a spectacular job on the man, Ray. Just enough so his arm won't get infected, causing him to die. Jared has them in the guardhouse, and I'm off to go get chains for them so they can't run away. Meet me over there?"
Ray thought for a moment and finally nodded. "We have enough new medics, they should be able to last without me for twenty minutes."
"That's the spirit." I smiled at Ray. I turned around, ready to head to the armory where the chains were kept, at least the ones I was going for - ones that could hook multiple people to and hook it to a tent post, or a tree, or whatever was around.
"Oh Gerard?" I turned and looked at him. "I'm glad you made it out a second time."
"Not as glad as I am," I said with my normal smile. He turned around to go back into the medic tent, and I turned to head in the direction of the armory tent.

As I was making my way to the guardhouse, the chains heavy in my hands, there were numerous people congratulating me. I kept my face as emotionless as I could as I walked, but it was hard. I was known to blush over compliments.
I stopped to talk to a fellow named Steve for a moment. He was new here, that's all I knew about him. He told me that he new Lindsey, he was one of the people who bought artwork from her.
"You're a lucky man, Gerard," he said, as if we were old friends. He seemed sincere enough about it.
"Thank you. Have you spoken to her lately?"
Steve nodded. "At one of her last art shows I went to, I asked her why one painting was so sad, and she told me that it was because you went off to war. I told her I had gotten drafted, and she told me that if I were to see you, I had to say hello."
"And so you have. Now, if you excuse me, I have to go. We'll talk later, Steve," I said as politely as I could, passing Ray one his way out of the tent.
"How's his shoulder?"
"He'll live," Ray said. His hands had dried blood on them, and I wondered if it was from this man or from earlier and I just didn't notice on it.
"Thank you Ray," I said, "I think your fellow medics are lost without you."
"Of course they are," Ray mused, turning to go back to the center of the camp, leaving me. I walked into the tent and almost ran into Jared who was blocking the entrance.
"Take this end," I said, handing him one end of the chain. My arms fell down to my sides. The chains were heavy, and just releasing them was a big relief.
Jared took the side I handed to him and started cuffing the light haired one, the one I had been holding. I moved to the dark haired one. "Arms out."
The man looked up at me, his eyes showing rebellion. I waited three seconds for him to hold his arms out before I lifted my hand up and slapped him across the face. I had an image to keep up, even if it was just for three prisoners. I needed to seem tough, I repeated in my head over and over.
"Ow! Not hitting me would be very appreciated," the man said, and I recognized his dialect as one I heard as I was growing up when I heard it. So he was from my home state, how nice.
"Then listen to me and put your arms out." I repeated and this time he did as he was told. Jared already had the middle one half cuffed before we came to a problem. His arm needed to stay in a sling.
"What do we do, Mister boss?" he asked, and I rolled my eyes at him.
"He can't use that hand anyways," I said after a moment of silence, "we could leave it. The weight of the chains would just straighten it out..."
"Do we really care about his wellbeing though?" Jared asked, taking a step back next to me, looking at the three of them. The light haired one on the side looked scared out of his wits, as would I if I were in his situation.
"We'll just leave it like that for the day," I concluded. I looked at the middle one, and started studying his face.
"Let's get down to business, shall we?" I asked, grinning from ear to ear. I watched as the three of them temporarily had fear flicker across their eyes. The dark haired one was clearly trying to show that he wasn't scared, but he wasn't doing a very good job of it.
"Let's start with something simple," I started, pacing in what little available space there was. I saw Jared grinning, a maniacal looking grin, probably having some other meaning behind of that I don't know about. He was staying quiet though, so I assume I was doing a good job with this. "General Christopher wants to know just why we should let you three pieces of scum live. Let's start there."
The light haired one spoke, the one that had saved their lives by telling me of the information they supposedly held. "If we tell you now, you'll just kill us." he said.
I pretended to think about what he said for a long moment. I didn't want to kill them, there were other things they could be used for. We could use them in the kitchen, with supervision so they don't try to poison everyone. They could be used to clean equipment, or even fight alongside of us if we can convince them to. There was no reason they needed to be killed when there were other ways to use them.
"Maybe I will, maybe I won't," I said slowly, watching their individual reactions to my words. "I might just kill you now if you don't tell me what's so important that your lives need to be spared."
None of the three spoke. The injured one looked to be in a lot of pain, using his chained hand to rub his shoulder softly, whimpering. He's the only one I hadn't heard a word out of the whole time, just little sounds to show he was in pain.
"If you're not going to tell me, I can make this very painful for the three of you. Mister Leto here is skilled in torture, you could say it's his specialty."
Jared wiggled his eyebrows when the three looked over at him, but still they said nothing. At some point the must have agreed not to say a word.
"Before I let Mister Leto loose on the three of you, I want to know one thing," I leaned forward, looking the middle one in the eyes, "what's your name?"
There was a long silence. I kept my eyes locked on his, even when he tried to look away. I reached a hand out, and hit the side of his face. The dark haired one tried to fight back, but I kicked him down easily. "Tell me your name, and I'll spare the three of you for the night."
"My name's Alex Gaskarth, sir," the light haired one said, and I turned to face him, "and that's Frank Iero, and this is Mi-"
"I can introduce myself, I'm not a baby," the middle one said, glaring at the one I can now call Alex.
"Really now? Then what's your name?" I asked. If they weren't going to tell me what I needed to know, I could at least learn their names, see if anyone had ever heard of them before.
"Mikey Way."
