The Innocent Relapse

Edge of Dead.

That night might have been one of the hardest. My forced sleeplessness was pulled tighter and tighter till I could see the cracks in the irrational system. I was the living dead. Three nights of no rest had proved to be my record, so to speak. I made it till 2 o’clock before I was falling asleep standing up. Luckily, I caught myself.

I picked up my phone and dialed Sierra’s number.

“Helloooo,” I heard her mumble tiredly on the other side.

“Sierra. It’s me.”

“It’s also two in the morning,” she sighed. “What do you need?”

“Can I come over and crash for the night?”

“Are you drunk or something?”

I shook my head at the nonsense, “What? No. I just need a place to sleep. Can I come over, please?”

Sierra paused, “Yeah, of course. I'll leave the side door unlocked. Do you remember the way?”

I thought back to yesterday, “Maybe you should refresh my memory.”

After obtaining the directions, I went to find the keys. I could tell Mom later. That was the least of my worries.

I stepped cautiously out of my room and began to tiptoe down the stairs. I snuck passed the kitchen.

“What are you doing?”

I stopped in my tracks. I turned towards your voice.

You sat in the breakfast nook, in the darkness. Your arms crossed over your chest and your foot tapping incessantly on the tile floor, inaudibly. Even in the darkness though, I could see you weren't wearing your glasses. Your wonder brown eyes looked tired and maybe slightly frustrated.

I gulped down, “I’m going to Sierra’s for the night. I can’t sleep.”

You didn’t seem to think this was odd. You seem preoccupied.

“I did it,” you said, looking away from me for a moment.

I shook my head, oblivious to what you were talking about.

“I broke up with Blake,” you giggled a little bit, making me think you were upset.

I didn’t know what to say. I tried to remember how to talk. Open my mouth. Breathe. Thoughts. Words. “Are you okay?”

You seemed to realize that me asking meant it was sincere. You sighed loudly. “I will be. It’s just always not fun, breaking up. Even if I got something better here.”

I felt my spine straighten but not really in a good way.

“Sorry,” you had noticed, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I nodded and continued out the door.
