The Light Behind Your Eyes

Chapter 20: Can't Help It

Rain's POV

What the fuck is this?!! Why am I floating?! What's even going on right now? Wherever I am, I'm in a room and it's very bright here. Am I dead? No, I can't be dead, because I'm looking at myself from what I think is the ceiling. I'm lying in a bed, a hospital bed, so now I know I'm not dead. But I have bruises on my face, I can see a place where I was cut on my neck, on my arms too, and I remember everything that happened. It's so horrible to think about, I have to push thoughts away. But I can't feel any pain. Am I healed? If so, why am I still asleep in that bed? And why am I up on the ceiling? Realization sets in, and I know that I'm in a coma and having one of those out of body experience thingys. I thought that only happened in the movies. Huh. Well this sucks, I can't get back in my body no matter how hard I try.

So do I just stay here until I wake up? But what if I don't wake up? Sometimes people in comas don't ever wake up. I start to panic until I see Gerard, sitting beside my bed in a chair, and I start to calm down. He's awake, but he looks like he hasn't slept in a while, his eyes are bloodshot and only half open. I can see he's holding my hand while he stares at my face, but he looks spaced out. I want to reach out and hug him, I can tell he's upset. Suddenly, I'm standing right beside him and...myself. That's going to take a while to get used to. There's a nearby window, and I see that it's daylight out as the sun pours in. Wait, has it been a day since Gerard found me? Did he just sit here the whole night like this?

At this very time, Pete comes in through the door with Bandit in his arms and I am so happy to see them! I feel a big grin cover my face as he comes further into the room and I can see he's got clothes for Gerard who is still bloody which explains why Bandit has a blindfold on. So he has been here all night. "Hey, Gerard. I've got your clothes whenever you're ready to change. I think now so Bandit can look at Rain." Pete greeted. Almost as if he didn't hear him, Gerard said, "She hasn't even moved, Pete. How does a person stay still, for so long?" "She's in a coma. People who are in a coma don't move." He replied setting the clothes into his lap. Gerard didn't say anything.

"Dude did you even sleep at all last night?" Pete asked. "For an hour. The rest of the time I couldn't. I had nightmares. I kept having the same dream, and it always ended with her leaving me." Looking at him sadly and wrapping my arms around him I say, "Oh Gee, I'm not going anywhere I promise." I kissed the corner of his mouth. He didn't react or respond. And I realized he couldn't hear or see or feel me, which made it heartbreaking. "I guess I'll go change." Gerard hesitated trying to pry his hand away almost not wanting to. He trudged to the bathroom and closed the door. Bandit finally moved for the first time, touching the fold. "When can I see daddy?" She whined.

"He's dressing. Here." Pete said laughing. He took Bandit's blindfold off and she rubbed her eyes as she searched the room. I smiled wanting to greet her as normal, but yet I can't. "Why isn't mommy awake?" Bandit asked. Pete replied with, "She's in a coma." A confused expression grew on Bandit's face. "What's a coma?" She asked curiously. "A coma is when a person can't wake up. But don't worry, mommy is safe." My daughter nodded at my brother and looked up when the door swung open, a smile growing on Gerard's face for the first time. If anything, Bandit was the only one that could make Gerard truly smile when I wasn't there. it was a fact.

"Daddy!" She exclaimed jumping off of Pete's lap and running into his open arms as he dropped to his knees. He kissed her cheek and went to sit back next to me placing Bandit in his lap. "Hey Gerard, I think you should take B to the cafeteria and get her some breakfast, along with yourself. She refused to eat breakfast without you because it's the Weekend Pancake Report. It's not pancakes but the least you could do is just take her, please. Rain won't go anywhere." Rubbing his eyes, Gerard sighed, defeated and nodded before picking Bandit on his hip and kissing my cheek before walking out of the room. Deciding to follow them, I float out of the room and float behind them.

Gerard has the bandanna wrapped around Bandit's mouth to prevent her from getting ill. Such a great father. They entered the cafeteria which was dead empty. No one was there. It was feed yourself so Gerard did. He did in fact find pancakes and took two carton plate things and two cartons of milk and forks with syrup before grabbing two apples and yogurt. They sat at a table as I watched. Gerard opened Bandit's carton and placed a straw in the milk as he opened her plate and handed her the syrup-drenched pancakes and a fork as she stuffed her mouth. Gerard ate some and they shared some laughs. Bandit downed her milk as Gerard got her yogurt ready. She ate all of that too and half the apple. I smiled watching this.

He fed her spoonfuls and each time he did she said, "Thank you daddy." and he would reply with, "Your welcome B." The two, got up and threw everything away before Gerard wrapped Bandit's mouth back up and swung her on his hip.

Pete's POV

Hours had past and during those hours, the doctor came in and checked on Rain and gave her vitals and such. She's doing okay for now. He's still not sure on the whole thing about her waking up, but if things continue to progress like this positively, she may come out of her coma very soon and make a full recovery. I could see that as the doctor left again, there was a new hope shining in Gerard's eyes with news about her expected recovery. He was starting to have a little more faith that she'd make it, and I think he was starting to think the same thing I was about her fighting.

When I got home with Bandit for her nap, the others were all gathered at my house, with Meagan and Bronx to keep them company. That and they all just wanted to be together. I quickly went upstairs with Bandit in my arms and placed her in the guest room bed where Rain had used it when she was pregnant with Bandit. When I entered the living room again, they all looked at me with hopefulness that Rain might've woken up, or wasn't in a coma but still asleep. I just shook my head and said, "Not yet, guys. Not yet." I watched as every one of their faces fell with disappointment. To cheer them up, I told them the doctor's report as Meagan handed me Bronx, who I was very happy to see.

I miss my little guy in the time that I'm away, whether it's just a few blocks or a few miles. They were happy to hear the good report and looked less disappointed. And then Frank dared to ask, "How is Gerard?" The room fell silent, waiting for an answer. "He's dealing...I got him to take B to have a Weekend Pancake Report in the cafe and he did tweet about it, with a picture of him and B eating. But the only other time he got or gets up is for the bathroom and straight to that chair and to her hand. I don't think it's healthy, but I don't know what else to do." I rubbed my temples, sighing. "Well, at least you got him to eat and tweet a selfie of him and B. Rain might have applauded you for that." Jamia said bouncing Cherry up and down as she laid her head on Frank's shoulder who clutched Lily.

"I just don't understand how he can sit in those chairs and sleep." Meagan said, shaking her head and frowning. "Truth be told, he doesn't. He told me he got an hour worth of sleep because he had nightmares. But if he could sleep, he would sit right there and sleep even if it knotted up his back because he'd be with her and that's all he wants." I said then added, "That's why he's so stubborn. He just wants to stay with her." "He can't help it, though. You know that right?" Ray said. I nodded,

"I know. And in a way, I'm glad that he can't."
