The Light Behind Your Eyes

Chapter 19: Knows She Has To Fight

Gerard's POV

"The house is clear!" A nearby officer shouts out as I stand here outside in a panic rocking back and forth as Bandit laid her head on my shoulder in my arms. I did not dare let her down. There were a couple back up officers that came and have been attempting to keep me calm. They're doing an alright job, but I'm breaking inside, and as soon as the officer announces the house is clear after hearing him fire his gun, I bolt through the front door before anyone can stop me, Bandit bouncing up and down as I ran. I checked quickly to make sure she was wearing the blindfold that I tied around her eyes so she wouldn't see anything. On my way in, I hear things like, 'Get an ambulance.' and '...Girl on the second floor at the end of the hall.' I also heard that Craig used Eliza's body as a shield and she was caught in the gunfire, and they shot him from behind. Hoping that the girl on the second floor is Rain, I charge up the stairs, past all the blood in the living room.

There's even more blood in the hallway on the second floor, like someone was being dragged across the floor, and it leads to the room at the end of the hall, the room I heard the cop talking about. I double checked that Bandit had the bandanna on and she was sleeping. It took longer than it should have for the police to trace Rain's number, it was harder for them for whatever reason. But then they found her, here in this house near the New York. The amount of relief I felt when I heard her voice earlier was huge, but then worry had come back over me as she gave me instructions. When she didn't come home from work a few nights ago, at first I'd thought maybe she was just a little late, but then I realized she was way too late.

I called Gracie and asked about her, but she said Rain had left the same time that she did and should have been home by now. That was when I started to freak out and called Pete because she wasn't answering her phone either. We called the cops, but they wouldn't do anything until it was the 24 hours came. When they did though, we reported and they set out to look for her but they found no evidence. I hated being all alone, on the first night, I went without sleep laying their in our bed by myself with my thoughts. I made my way to the end of the hall, following the trail of blood to a room that had light red walls, and I could see windows on the far side, and a dresser and mirror not too far from the door.

I could see the end of the bed too. I felt like I was in a horror movie with all this blood I was seeing, and when I got inside the room, there was only more of it. Pools of the, everywhere. You could almost smell the metallic scent that blood had, you could almost taste it too. It was terrible, and at first that was all I saw until I saw a girl slumped in the corner of the room. Rain. She was covered in blood, and I could see her hands covering a deep wound on her upper leg, and there was a pool of blood surrounding her. I realized that not all of this blood could be hers and remembered how she mentioned Rose.

But Rose wasn't there and I assumed she didn't make it. Looking at Rain, I noticed how unnaturally still she was, how she didn't move and I couldn't see her chest rising. Oh God, I'm too late! Tears welled up in my eyes and spilled over my cheeks, a lump forming in my throat as I walked over and kneeled beside her, clutching Bandit and studying her blood covered face. Her eyes were shut, her skin pale. My heart broke. "What did they do to you?" I whispered out painfully as I reached out and pushed back some hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear. Just wanting to confirm it, I put two fingers to her neck to feel for a pulse and held still as I waited. But then I felt something unexpected.

I felt a pulse. A very light pulse but it was still there. She is alive! My heart stared racing and my tears stopped suddenly as I pulled her into my arms trying to keep Bandit on my shoulder Suddenly she flinched trying to get away, and I knew she thought I was either Eliza or Craig. "Hey, it's okay, it's just me. Gerard and B." I told her softly and I watched as her eyes opened halfway. Very little light was left in them. The light behind her eyes was gone. I caressed her cheek lightly with my hand as she squinted her eyes at me, as though she was struggling to see my face. "Gerard?" I could just barely make out her voice. I reach down and take one of her hands not caring or noticing the blood.

"I'm here Darling, i'm right here." I said squeezing her hand. "Gerard, you gotta get our of here! Get Bandit and yourself away they're gonna kill you both! You have to go." She said frantically meaning Eliza and Craig when she said 'they.' I shook my head, "No, no they're not going to get me or B. They're dead. They can't hurt us." "They're....they're dead?" "Yes," I said and then asked, "Where's Rose." Her eyes saddened and she didn't have to explain, I understood. She joined the Black Parade like I suspected. After a moment, she said, "Why is it so cold in here?" I felt my eyes burn with tears again, knowing she was just barely hanging on. It wasn't even cold in here at all, even though I was wearing my leather jacket.

I gently placed Bandit onto the bed where there was no blood and shrugged my jacket off then draped her around her. I pulled her back into my arms again. I cradled her with one arm, and held onto her hand tightly, and she gripped my hand as much as she still could. I could hear the ambulance coming, it's sirens not to far. "Everything's going to be okay. Just hold on." I stared into her eyes praying she would magically get more strength. "Is Pete okay?" She asked. I nodded, "Pete's fine, just shooken up and worried about you. You'll see him soon." "Missy?" "Angry as hell that you were taken, but she's okay too." I replied and saw a small smile momentarily cross her face. "Everyone is okay, but like Pete, they're scared and worried."

"MIKEY!!" She shot up. She always worried for him. They were the closest. "Mikey's fine sweet pea." I whispered. Tears slipped from my eyes before I had a chance to stop them. Her free hand came up and cupped my cheek gently. She couldn't say anything as she lost the remaining strength. Just by looking in her eyes that had that very small light left in them, I knew she was telling me it was okay. The sirens were closer, almost here. Her eyes started to shut again, I started to panic, "Rain, don't you dare shut your eyes! Keep 'em open, stay awake, please!" "I can't." There was almost no sound when she spoke, I had to make out the words by reading her lips.

"You have to, just until the paramedics get here, it won't be long I promise. Stay with me, don't go to sleep on me. If you go to sleep then I won't be sure if you'll come back, and I need you here with me so you have to keep your eyes open. Just don't go. Please." I begged glancing at Bandit who had curled up on her side. The next two nearly inaudible words out of her mouth were,

"I'm sorry."

And just like that, her eyes shut as if someone just flipped a switch and turned her off. I hoped she maybe would open her eyes again for me but she wouldn't. She couldn't hear my pleads for her to open them and to wake up. She didn't feel me shaking her and tugging her sleeve. She was cut off from the world. But she was still alive. Still breathing. Just barely. "Don't let go. Don't leave me, don't leave us." I whispered and kissed the top of her head. I could hear jogging down the hallway and soon an officer came through the doorway, "Is she alive?" I nodded, "Yes." "Good, the paramedics are here. Grab your daughter and follow me." I nodded and grabbed Bandit and the officer offered to carry her so I could get Rain.

He picked her up and waited as I grabbed Rain in my arms. He stayed in pace with me as we went down the stairs to make sure I got down with her alright. The paramedics were at the door, where I met them with Rain, and they took her from me and put her on the stretcher before getting her in the back of the ambulance. They let me ride with her with Bandit in my arms, sleeping. They got her an oxygen mask and I slipped Rain's hand into Bandit's. The police were going to contact Pete as soon as she was found. He was with the others and they would be told when they could come.

When we got to the hospital, I still stayed by her side as they rushed her down the halls and into a room, but they wouldn't let me in while they checked her injuries and cleaned her up. Which I understood. So I sat across the hall from her room with Bandit in my lap, sleeping on my chest with my head tilted back on the wall. I prayed Bandit wasn't going to wake up. I didn't want her to see her daddy covered in her mommy's blood and think the wrong thing. I sat for several minutes before I heard someone yelling to me, "Gerard!!!" I lifted my head to see Pete running with the others behind him. Which was a large group. He called to me again, just as he reached me.

He fell to his knees and placed a hand on my shoulder, out of breath. I shushed him and pointed to sleeping B. He nodded. "Is she okay? Is my sister okay?" He asked worriedly. "I- I don't know. She's hurt really bad, Pete. She lost a lot of blood. The blood, you should've seen the blood...oh God." I whimpered and he studied me with wide eyes. "Oh Gee, you're covered in it!" Meagan exclaimed before adding, "Give me B, she might barf from the stench." I shakily handed Meagan Bandit and she placed her on her own shoulder. Suddenly I could hear the doctor saying, 'Clear!' and I took my head off Pete's shoulder slowly.

It came from her room. "No. No No!!" I screeched. I can't stop more tears coming as the doctors come out and tell me they did all they could but it wasn't enough. But there were no more shouts and the door remains closed. For now, we take she's alright. I look at the others who watch me in sadness. Jamia clung onto Frank for dear life as he buried the crook of his neck into Cherry's neck as Lily slept on his shoulder, Katlin clutched onto Bronx and Bob had his arms wrapped around her, Alicia held onto Mikey as he sobbed madly into her, Ray and Christa stayed to the side quietly sobbing, and Meagan held a sleeping Bandit with watery eyes.

An hour dragged by before the doctor finally came out of the room they'd been checking Rain's injuries and fixing her up in. I scrambled up off the floor and Pete followed behind me. He noticed how many of us there were, and frowned. He told us right away that after today, only direct family- myself, Bandit, Pete and Meagan were allowed to see her. Then he told us that they'd given stitches on her leg, and a few on her arm as well. "....She has a concussion." He said and I swallowed hard, "She's fallen into a coma, and we're not sure if or when she'll wake up. There's always a possibility that she may never wake up. We had to use defibrillators once on her, and now she has more stable heart beat, as well as a breathing pattern. And we checked for any internal bleeding and found none." He informed.

He flipped through his chart, "You can all go in and see her any time but again, after today, direct family only please." As the doctor walked away, I slumped back against the wall with one hand over my mouth. Pete and Frank came over to make sure I didn't fall over or anything, which was good because I felt as though I was going to faint, or lose strength in my legs at any moment. They were saying something to me, but I couldn't hear them over my disbelief. "Gerard? Gerard, are you okay?" I heard Frank's voice as I tuned back in. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Coma? She wasn't awake? Instead, I just walked forward, straight into Rain's room.

She was recognizable again, laying there in that bed. They'd gotten all the blood off of her, and now you could very clearly see the bruises and cuts all over her. It made my hatred for Craig and Eliza grow, but then I remember they can't ever hurt her again, and I calm down. But she's not as pale anymore, she's still back to her normal color. Pale but not deadly pale. Just her really pale skin face, her porcelain face. You can hear the beeping from the heart rate monitor, and I'm counting on that beeping because if it stops, I lose her. But I'm trying to keep my faith that she's going to be okay, and Rain will wake up soon. Maybe not today, but possibly tomorrow. Typically, a coma can last for months, years even. But if it can't last that long, then why couldn't she only be in a two-day or one-day coma? It could happen, couldn't it?

I moved to her beside, just studying her for a moment before grabbing the nearest chair and sitting beside her, taking her hand into mine. I leaned over and bury my face into her neck, trying to swallow down the lump forming in my throat.

Pete's POV

Two more hours went by as we all stayed in the hospital room. The others wanted to stay as long as they could today, where they can't come into the room again after today because they're not 'direct family.' They hated that, but they couldn't do anything about it. If Rain were awake, she'd chew the fuck out of the doctor, telling them they were family in the first place. Gerard didn't have any emotion in his face except for when he was completely directing his attention on Rain. Otherwise, he was almost zombified while being lost in thought, never letting go of her hand. Even though he had a sleeping Bandit in his lap. Bandit didn't wake up once, and Gerard kept praying she didn't until they got home so he could change the blood.

Bandit did spend most nights crying over Rain when she was missing and Gerard would have to ask Megan to come over and sing her to sleep because it wasn't working without Rain's voice. So Bandit needed the sleep. If Gerard wasn't in deep thought, and just looking at her, you could see the worry, sadness, longing and the love on his face. Occasionally, he'd kiss her forehead, cheek, top of her head, or sometimes even her hand. Sometimes he'd cup her cheek with his hand, or caress it, and sometimes he would stroke her hair and brush it out of her face when it was necessary.

The sad thing was, Gerard planned on asking Rain to finally marry him after all these years. Rain never wanted a big proposal, so he asked me if I had my blessing, and went a bought a ring. He was going to propose one night. But then she went missing. At the moment, I had Missy standing beside me as we were nearer to the door of the room. The others stood along the wall or sat in the chairs, mostly just watching Gerard, Meagan taking Bandit who was slowly waking to make her fall asleep again. I heard Missy say in a quiet, cracking voice, "It's bad enough to see her lying there beat up, but then to see him sitting right beside her bed like that and never leaving her side..." She shook her head as we watched Gerard kiss Rain's cheek before resting his forehead gently against hers.

"I can't Pete. I just can't." Tears came to her eyes again. I hug her tightly and rub her back, "Shh...it's okay. Everything's gonna be okay." But Missy was right. It was hard, just watching Gerard sit beside her and never leave her side. It was like the two of them were in a glass box and we were observing them, unable, to do anything but feel the aching in our chests. It was heartbreaking, especially because we knew just how much they loved each other. It was just plain obvious when you walked into a room and saw them together, even if you didn't know them, that they were a pair, that they were in love. They just gave off this vibe, and that was how you knew just by looking at them. He'd whisper something into her ear, and she'd laugh or smile and say something back, and he'd grin and usually that was where he would kiss her and then they'd just do it over again.

When they looked at each other, or even Bandit, all you saw was just this pure love shining in their eyes and nothing could ever take that away. Even now, though she wasn't looking back at him, that same shine was still there whenever he looked at her. Lindsey came over, seeing that Missy was upset, and she took her face out of my chest to hug her. She kissed the top of her head and whispered to her the same thing I told her, though even coming from her that didn't help her. The truth was, we didn't know how 'okay' things were going to be. It all depended on when and if Rain woke up, and she better wake up or everything is going to go to hell. But I know that somewhere deep inside of her, she's awake, and she knows that she has to wake up and she's fighting to do it. She may not be able to hear us, or feel Gerard, but she knows she has to fight.

And the more that I think about it, the more I believe my sister can and will wake up and recover. Later at night, as the visiting hours were just about to get done, the others had gone as well. But Meagan and I were still there, and we had Lindsey and Missy take Bronx for the night. Gerard was still right there in his chair beside Rain, his hand still gripping tightly to hers. Deciding to try and get some rest, I came up beside him and let a hand rest lightly on his shoulder. "Hey man, you should get you and B home and get some sleep, you need it." I said gently. His head whipped around me me, his eyes wide, "No!" He snapped, and then after realizing he'd snapped at me, he said more calmly, "No, no, I can't leave her." "Okay, I'll go tell the nurse and see what she thinks."

I walked to the desk and found Rain's nurse. "Hey, uh is it okay if Gerard stays the nights? He refuses to leave and- " She raised her hand, "Say no more, I think those two are too cute. I will not allow them to be separated." She informed. I thanked her with a laugh, I told you they had that vibe they were in love. I entered the room and patted Gerard's back, "You can stay here for the nights. We'll take B. And bring her back tomorrow along with fresh clothes. When she's awake and maybe she will cheer you up. Just please sleep some?" I asked, as he sighed, "thank you Pete. It means a lot." he whispered. "No problem Gerard. If you will marry my sister when she wakes up, then we are like brothers and I care for you."

He barely smiled and I added, "Just sleep okay?" "I will." He mumbled.

I have a feeling this next week is going to be hell.
