Bury All Your Secrets In My Skin

Is This How the Story Ends?

Carla wandered down the corridor, swaying her hips as she made her way towards the boardroom. A thin smile crept upon her face; she had done it. She had finally found the anomaly they had been looking for; the thorn in her side that she had been so anxious to get rid of. She pushed open the double doors, turning left as she headed towards the black doors at the end of the white corridor; walking with pride as she held her head up high.

They would catch that son of a bitch; she would make sure of it.

Suddenly a hand shot out from the janitor’s cupboard, grabbing hold of her arm and yanking her inside. A hand quickly covered her mouth as she tried to scream, watching in horror as the door slammed shut; plunging her into darkness. The light above her suddenly click on. Carla swiftly turned, groaning in annoyance as she gazed up at Warren who was giggling in his hands. “Wow. Never thought I’d see the day you’d shit your pants” Warren said, keeping his voice low as he stood grinning under the light. Carla slapped him on the arm, rolling her eyes as she turned to leave- she didn’t have time for his games.

“Hey wait a minute” He demanded, grabbing her by the shoulder and pulling her back; watching her flash him an stern look as placed her hands on her hips. “It’s all very well coming up with these smart ideas but just how do you think you’re going to catch this guy? For all you know he could be dead!” He said sharply, staring down at her as the dim light flickered above them. Carla smiled, running her fingers lightly down the arms of his suit as she moved closer to him, gently blowing on his neck. Warren licked his lips, closing his eyes as a large grin emerged upon his lips; feeling her fingers slowly run through his hair as she pressed her body against his. He tilted back his head, almost willing her to kiss his neck- it had been so long since he had someone like her, someone so beautiful, so confident, and so full of life.

Perhaps he really did miss her.

A quiet giggle escaped from her as she moved her lips closer to his ear. “Leave it to me” She whispered, sliding out of his grasp and walking out of the cupboard. Carla continued to walk down the corridor, throwing back her head and laughing to herself; he couldn’t just have her how he pleased- she wasn’t anyone’s bitch.

*******

The group drove through a desolate housing estate, passing overturned bins and corpses which lined the streets along with burnt out cars which had crashed against the trees that stood in the centre of the roundabout. Frank stared out of the window, paying no attention to these sights, the light chatter that filled the car or the jealous looks from Levi as Billie cuddled his baby daughter. Instead, his mind wandered back to the sight of the plane in the sky; there was no way civilisation could have survived the apocalypse and even if it had.

Why would they come here now?

The car pulled up onto a driveway, outside a large house on the corner of the street. Jenny gently shook his shoulder, breaking his train of thought. “Wakey wakey” She joked, smiling sweetly as him as she slowly made her way out of the car. “Where are we?” Frank asked, glancing over at Jenny and dragging his hands down his face. “My grandparents house” Jenny replied. Levi quickly grabbed her arms, steadying her as she climbed out of the car; wincing in pain as she moved. “Round the back...and hurry” She directed. The group moved fast, running around the back of the house and climbing over the gate. Frank kicked the back door in, rushing them inside and barricading the door behind them as Levi sat Jenny down at the kitchen table. “Right then, me and Gerard will check upstairs, Billie hand Emma over to Levi and check down here. Levi.... look after Jen” Frank ordered, producing his gun from his waist and switching the safety off. The Gerard nodded, walking through the kitchen door with Frank and quietly headed upstairs.

Frank and Gerard crept up the creaking stairs, clutching their weapons as they listened out for the sound of walkers in the house. Gerard opened his mouth to speak, his eyes glancing around the hallway as they reached the top of the stairs. “Shh” Frank hissed, wavering his hand at Gerard and silencing him immediately. A buzzing sound was coming from behind the front bedroom door. The two men slowly walked towards it, a putrid smell wafting out of the room; bringing tears to their eyes as the smell grew stronger. Frank kicked out at the door, it flung on its hinges and hit against the bedroom wall with a loud crash. He moved inside, aiming his gun ahead of him when he stops.

Two corpses lay rotting in their bed, holding hands as the flies buzzed around them and the maggots crawled out of the empty sockets that once held their eyes. The pair stared at this horrific site, covering their mouths and nose as the sickening smell hit them hard. Gerard glanced over at the bedside cabinet, his eyes passing pictures of the once happy couple and their family that hung from the wall and rested on the shelves before noticing bottles of empty pills that littered its surface. His heart sank at this sight; they loved each other too much to lose one another so they saw no other choice but to go together.

The men slowly moved out of the room, Gerard pained eyes remained fixed to the floor as Frank clicked the door shut behind them. “What’s wrong?” Frank asked, raising an eyebrow as Gerard paused on his way to the stairs. He sighed heavily, glancing back at Frank who was leaning with him against the banister. “This is how it ends isn’t it? We either become a monster or...like that” He muttered, beckoning at the door behind his boyfriend. Frank placed his hands on Gerard’s arms, trying to catch his eye. “Gerard...Gerard listen to me, I won’t let that happen”. Gerard scoffed him, shaking his head in dismay. “It’s inevitable” He replied softly, shrugging his shoulders.

There was a moment of silence between them. As much as he hated to admit it, Frank knew this was true. The longer they stayed like this, running up and down the country chasing every pipe dream that flew in the sky or was broadcasted on a radio one of them was bound to get killed. He knew they had to find a place to hide, to remain safe in order to survive.

But it wasn’t the walkers or the psycho girlfriend that terrified them anymore.

It was oblivion
Annihilation
The fact that there truly was nothing left but them anymore.

“You know I’d do anything to keep you safe” Frank said quietly, lowering his hands as he struggled to meet his lovers eye. “So why won’t you try and find out where that plane was heading? There has to be a government or military base around here somewhere” He protested, a glimour of hope in his eyes as he spoke. Frank sighed, moving past him and back down the stairs, hanging his head in shame.

He was tired of following pipe dreams.

Billie dragged the last corpse out of the house and into the garden, wiping a filmy layer of sweat from his forehead as he collapsed onto the wooden bench beside him. Frank piled the bodies into a heap, pouring a strong smelling liquid onto them before bringing out his lighter. Billie leapt to his feet, pulling Frank away from the pile. “We bury the ones we love if we can” He said, remembering the look on Jenny’s face as she saw the decaying remains of her family.

A scream suddenly ripped through the street; the cry for help echoing through the neighbour. The men grabbed their shovels and rushed over to the wall at the end of the garden, peering over the top to find a blonde girl crawling backwards away from two walkers who were quickly shuffling towards her. They jumped over the wall, beating the two walkers to the ground.

Silence soon hung in the air. Frank turned towards the girl, holding out his hand to help her up when he paused for a moment; staring down at her pretty face. Hadn’t he seen her somewhere before? Didn’t he know her once? “Don’t I know you?” He asked, tilting his head slightly in confusion.

The girl ignored his hand, a large grin spreading across her face as she scrambled to her feet and dusted the dirt off her clothes. “Believe me honey, you’d remember me if you did”
