Bury All Your Secrets In My Skin

Dead Silence

Jenny sat at the kitchen table, smiling down at her new baby as she cradled her in her arms. She was perfect. Her tiny, star fish hands wrapped around her finger as her pale blue eyes stared up at her; slowly closing as she began to fall asleep. “Thank god you’re a quiet baby” She said, kissing her on the forehead.

Frank rushed into the kitchen, running a hand through his hair as he struggled to control his temper. “Don’t be so fucking stupid” Levi cried, running in after him and pulling him back by the shoulder; forcing him to face him. Frank shoved him off, his face twisting into a sneer as he squared up to him. “Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to! If you want to go out there with all of them then be my fucking guest” Frank shouted, beckoning towards the windows. Billie and Gerard quickly ran into the room, Gerard standing between the arguing pair as he tried to defuse the situation.

Levi clenched his fists; he couldn’t understand why he was being so selfish? They had a chance to escape, to be safe from the danger that threatened them every day and all he wanted to do was hide out in here. “Guy’s this isn’t helping...”Gerard said, trying to keep them apart. “Oh come on Gerard even you have to admit he’s being a twat!” Levi spat, staring venomously at Frank. Frank lashed out, hurling his fist towards Levi’s face. Gerard held him back, pushing him away as he narrowly missed Levi’s face. “Can we all just calm... the fuck...down!” Gerard cried, looking back and forth between the angry pair as they continued to argue.

Jenny tried to stand, wincing in pain as she hoped to pull her boyfriend away from Frank before he got hurt. “Guy’s stop...please...” She said, her eyes watering from the pain as she struggled to move. Billie rushed to her side, helping her sit back down. “Billie they’ll hear us...” She protested, panic rising in her voice; her mind wandering to terrifying thoughts of the walkers and what could happen to her daughter if they got in. Billie glanced back at them; rolling his eyes at them before turning back to Jenny- he wasn’t going to let anything happen to her, he had made that promise a long time ago. “Let me sort this” He said softly, flashing her sympathetic smile as he turned back towards the group.

“All of you shut the fuck up!” He hissed, silencing them immediately. The men stared at him, dumbfounded by his sudden outburst. “If you keep arguing like this, they hear you and Jenny can’t run in her condition” He growled, keeping his voice low. Levi stared at Billie, taken aback by this. Since when did he care so much about Jenny? All he was trying to do was keep them safe and suddenly he was the bad guy in all this. “Fuck off Billie” Levi sneered, he never had a problem with Billie, but right now he wasn’t in the mood for him. Frank shoved him back, knocking Levi onto the floor. “Don’t talk to him like that! He’s right! Think of your family” Frank yelled, ignoring Gerard’s plea’s for him to stay quiet. Levi rubbed the back of his head, staggering to his feet and stood face on with Frank. “Think of my family, all you think about is yourself you lousy piece of shit!” Levi screamed, jabbing him in the chest and waking up the baby.

Jenny slowly rose to her feet, trying to sooth her crying baby when she heard a noise coming from the window. She began to walk closer to it, fear coursing through her veins as a frightening thought entered her mind. They were being too loud. The walkers would hear them if they didn’t stay quiet.

Suddenly a hand shot through the window, loud moans began flooding through the broken glass as the walkers began tearing down the window defences. Jenny screamed as she stared terrified at the window, alerting the others. Frank grabbed hold of Gerard’s arm, pulling him back and pushing him through the kitchen door. “Everyone to the back of the house, now! He cried, rushing out of the kitchen. The group began to flee the kitchen, Jenny struggling behind them as the sharp, excruciating pain flared up inside her. “Levi please...take her” She pleaded, her eyes filled with fear as she called after him. Levi quickly ran to her, taking his daughter out of her arms. He stared at her for a moment, unsure of what to do. He knew she couldn’t move very far; he couldn’t leave her like this, could he? “I’ll be fine, GO, NOW! She screamed, listening to a crash echo from the kitchen; they were coming.

Levi kissed her one last time before heading to the back of the house. Jenny staggered through the halls, tears trailing down her cheeks as she tried to battle through the pain, tried to stay alive long enough to see her daughter grow up. But as another crash came from the kitchen and the moans grew louder, she knew that there might not be a way out for her this time. She collapsed to the floor, crying out in agony as she found herself unable to move.

This was it.

There was no way out for her now.

A pair of arms suddenly picked her up. Jenny stared up at Billie as he carried her bridal style out of the house. “You shouldn’t have come back. You should have saved yourself” She said hoarsely. Billie ignored her as he kicked open the living room door and ran through the room to the backdoor. Walkers began to fill the house; snapping their bloodied jaws as they chased them outside. Jenny buried her face into Billie’s chest, surprised to feel his heart pound with every step. She had never known Billie to be afraid before; then again, she hadn’t known him to show much emotion before.

Billie sharply turned a corner, spying Frank ahead of him as the rest of the group jumped inside an old green land rover. “Come on! Get in the car!” Frank shouted, watching fearfully as walkers began pouring out of the house, running towards them. Frank held out a gun, firing it into the crowd and slowly killing them one by one. Billie carefully placed Jenny in the car, checking she was ok before running back to Frank. “Let’s go now!” Billie shouted at him, glancing back to find the car slowly pulling away. The two men quickly ran back to the car, chasing it as it began to drive down the street. Jenny opened the door, pulling them inside as they reached the car. “Floor it” Frank ordered, breathing heavily on the backseat of the car. Levi put his foot down, speeding off down the street and out of the village; cautiously eyeing the walkers who were still changing them down the road.

Billie slumped back in his seat, eyeing Jenny as Gerard carefully handed back her baby. Jenny glanced over to him, smiling sweetly at him. “Thank you, you didn’t have to do that” She said, cuddling her daughter. Billie smiled, stroking the baby’s head as he sat beside her; he couldn’t just leave her like that, she meant a lot to him and he would hate to see her go like that. “I couldn’t leave Emma without a mum could I” He muttered, locking eyes with Jenny- suppressing the overwhelming sense of affection he felt towards her.

Levi watched them in the mirror, gripping hold of the steering wheel as jealously quickly rose inside him.
