Chapter Twenty-Three

Caterina stared up at the house, listening to the muffled cries coming from the house. She couldn’t stand it. How could he treat someone like that and get away with it? She stared towards the front door, her heart racing as she heard a loud thud come from upstairs. “Oh my god” She whispered fearfully, reaching out to open the front door.

Suddenly, she stopped.

Frank was a lot bigger than her. He was also a lot stronger than she was, if he couldn’t defend himself against Gerard then how could she possibly help him? What if he attacked her too? Caterina backed off, biting her nails nervously as she stared helplessly at the door. She didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t just leave Frank here with this psycho, what if he ended up in hospital, or worse, what if Gerard killed him? She had heard it on the news before, people being killed by their abusive partners but this was different, this was a teacher physically abusing a student. Caterina bit her lip; she couldn’t allow this to continue. It didn’t matter that it was Mikey’s brother, her friend was in trouble and she needed to do something.
She walked away from the house, dialling 999 on her mobile. Holding the phone to her ear, she glanced back at the house, a worried look forming on her face. “Hello Hertfordshire Police Station how may I help you?” Taking a deep breath, Caterina opened her mouth to plead for the help she desperately required, tears welling in her eyes as she snuck away from the house, hoping that it wasn’t all for nothing.

Frank sighed, leaning against the doorframe as he spoke to the two police officers on his front door. He knew this would happen eventually, someone would hear them and call the police. “It was just an argument on the phone” He explained wearily, watching the policeman write down everything he was saying. The other officer eyed him with caution, studying is every movement, his every word, almost as if she knew something wasn’t right about the situation. Frank wasn’t surprised by this; the large, purple bruise that tarnished his skin was clearly visible, stretching from the corner of his mouth and along his jaw. “Who were you arguing with?” The policeman asked, glancing up from his notes. Frank rolled his eyes; he really didn’t want to be doing this. “My friend Ray, we got into a row over his girlfriend” He replied, growing irritated by the never ending questions.

Just go away He thought miserably.

The female officer stared at him, her eyes wide with suspicion as she continued to study Frank. She had seen bruises like that before, mainly on women with abusive partners. “How did you get that bruise?” She asked, her face remaining the same emotionless gaze as she refused to take her eyes off the young man in front of her. Frank ran a hand through his hair, thinking about the answer he had rehearsed over and over in his head whilst they had been asking their questions. “Yesterday, we were playing Rugby in school and I got hit in the face with the ball” Frank replied quietly, taking his eyes off the police for a second as he spoke. He was a bad liar; his mother had always said so. He couldn’t look the police in the eye and lie, especially that woman who was beginning to grow more and more concerned with every word that left his mouth.

The policeman cleared his throat, finishing his notes before looking back up at Frank. “Where is your friend now?” The policeman asked. “I don’t know, at his house probably” Frank snapped, he was tired of the questions; he just wanted this to be over. “Where’s his house?” the policeman asked. Frank paused for a moment, scrambling his brain for an answer. He didn’t want to give away any of his friends address’, the last thing he wanted was to cause any more trouble than he already had done. “Epping” He said quietly, glancing down at the policeman’s paper as he continued to make notes. He glanced back up at Frank smiling at him before touching his hat. “Ok thanks, have a nice evening” He said, walking off down the path towards his car.

His college watched him leave before turning back to face Frank, noticing a change in his facial expression. He no longer looked impatient or annoyed; he looked hurt, drawn, perhaps as though he had given up all hope. “Mr Iero?” She asked, keeping her voice low as she stared into the young man’s dark brown eyes. “If you feel threatened in anyway, we can help you” She said softly, hoping that he would give something away. “No! Ok, I’m fine. It was just an argument on the phone” Frank snapped. The pair stood there for a moment, watching each other’s reaction before the policewoman slowly nodded her head. She knew something wasn’t right but what could she do, if he didn’t tell her anything then how could she possibly help him?

Frank watched her turn and leave, her footsteps crunching up the path as she left him standing alone in the doorway. Frank face crumpled into a look of hurt, he couldn’t help but feel as though he had made a mistake. Closing the door, he swallowed hard, a feeling of regret rising in his chest as he thought about the police officer. He could have stopped it. He could have gotten Gerard some help if he had spoken up. But then he would have lost him forever and he was nothing without him

Right?

He closed the door, pressing his back against the cold white wood when Gerard slowly emerged from the living room. Frank slowly walked towards him, pulling Gerard into a hug before he felt his lover’s arms slide around his waist. Frank sighed, feeling Gerard kiss him on the forehead as, for a brief moment, they stood in silence; relieved that the police had finally left. “You’ve got to stop doing this” Frank said sadly, breaking the silence. Gerard said nothing, what more was there to say? He wasn’t the one in the wrong. If Frank had only done as he was asked then none of this would have happened, he knew this. “You know I love you Frankie, but you don’t realise how much you hurt me” Gerard said softly, lifting him by his chin to meet his gaze.

Frank gave him a look of confusion. Hurt him? He hadn’t done anything had he? “What...?” He started; shaking his head in bewilderment before Gerard quickly cut him off. “Frankie I know you don’t mean to, but when you ignore me or go off with people like Ray, well it upsets me. I mean I know Ray and Caterina are your friends but it’s like you hang out with them just to get at me and it really hurts me to think that you’d do that?”

“Gerard, I would never do anything to hurt you, you know that” Frank protested, cupping his face with his hand. “Not on purpose you would but... I don’t know. It’s like you try provoke me and I don’t want to hurt you Frankie, but please stop doing this to me” Gerard replied, his voice dangerously calm as he spoke. Frank stood there for a moment, dumbfounded by what he had just said. Had he really hurt him that much? Maybe he had provoked him into doing it. “Gerard, I’m sorry for upsetting you” He said, trying to meet Gerard’s gaze only for him to move away from him. Gerard shook his head, grabbing his jacket from the coat hook and heading towards the door. “You know what Frank? I don’t think you are” He sneered, storming out of the front door and locking it behind him. Frank ran to the front door, hammering his fists it as he begged for Gerard to come back, tears trailing down his cheeks as an empty feeling of loneliness suddenly engulfed him. “Gee please, I’m so sorry!” He cried, slumping against the door, he couldn’t just leave him like this. He didn’t mean to upset him, Gerard was right, he was a horrible person.

He didn’t deserve anyone in this world.
