You're The Only Hope For Me

Chapter 19

The three of them pretty much lived at the hospital for the next few weeks. Clara would leave Gerard and Hazel when she had to work but she was only down the stairs. Gerard would go home at night, Clara went with him all the time, Hazel not quite as often.
Clara had become close with Hazel, and the two of them were almost inseparable. It had been Hazel's idea for Clara to stay with them at Gerard’s house, Gerard had agreed and brought a mattress though into the room Hazel was sleeping in so that Clara could sleep on the floor. Hazel and Clara were able to discuss anything because they were so similar, whether it be music or something secret that one needed to confide in the other, they could always talk to each other. Hazel was glad she'd made a friend because whilst she was talking, laughing, and even sometimes singing with Clara her mind wasn't freaking out about Frank.
Frank was a bit different altogether; he never stirred and the constant bleeping of his heart monitor stayed at the same pace, after a while everyone stopped hearing it because they become so used to it. Hazel spent as many nights as possible sleeping in the chair, so that she could be there when he woke up.
If he woke up.
Eventually Gerard took pity on her and persuaded Clara to talk to the manager. Clara spoke to her manager and somehow convinced her to allow Hazel to stay overnight. Hazel had no idea what Clara had said to the manger but the manager seemed like a reasonable woman who allowed Hazel to stay. Gerard brought her some pyjamas and other items and Hazel spent most nights by Frank's side, Gerard made the condition that she had to go back to his pretty regularly but Hazel felt she could live with that.
Their days were spent playing music quietly, playing card games, joking together, planning outings for the future, talking "what ifs" about their favourite bands, and helping Clara with various things to do with her work.
Gerard brought his sketch books and storyboards and sat drawing comics for his work, Clara and Gerard drove to pizza places together to pick up food for them all and sometimes Hazel went with them, occasionally Hazel went out with Gerard and the two of them talked about Frank, alternatively Hazel went out with Clara to go shopping or to the cinema, or just for a walk sometimes, but her heart wasn't really in it all. Yeah, it was fun enough but she just really missed Frank.
Clara and Gerard also got really close, and Hazel amused herself by making eyes at them almost every time they were together. She made it her personal mission to make Clara blush, Gerard was easy - she just had to raise her eyebrows at him and she'd immediately see the pink begin to tinge his face, then he'd lower his head and avert his eyes so he was staring at his feet. He seemed so nervous and so insecure about her doing that that Hazel almost felt bad for teasing him. Almost, but not quite. Clara was much more difficult as she seemed to find it funny, so far Hazel hadn't succeeded. When Hazel was made to go sleep at Gerard's she would spend at least half the night attempting to make Clara at least become awkward about it. She sort of succeeded but only because she said something so dodgy it also made her awkward as well as embarrassed that she’d thought up such a thing.
The nights were the worst though, as Gerard and Clara were gone and Hazel was alone with Frank. She had none of the teasing Gerard or laughs with Clara to distract her from her thoughts and although she knew she was happiest by Frank’s side, it was a strange kind of happiness. She was happy to be with him, but she just missed him so much.
She ran through it all in her head pretty much every night, and had established that she would give and do almost anything to have Frank back. She missed the nights they’d spent together, and she missed him singing under his breath whenever he was busy, she missed their raves in the car whenever they were driving somewhere, she just missed everything.
Hazel spent most nights curled up in the chair, stroking Frank’s hand and whispering how much she loved and missed him as tears crept down her cheeks. Eventually she’d cry herself to sleep and be wakened up in the morning when Gerard and Clara returned.
No doctors or nurses needed to come to Frank because Clara was capable of doing the checks and she worked at the hospital, Hazel was glad of that more than she ever said.
A lot of time was spent filling Clara in about who Frank was and what he was like. Hazel spoke about Frank as a person, and Gerard spoke about Frank and the things they’d done, which were often new to Hazel as well as Clara. Gerard even brought in some photo albums to show them both and Hazel persuaded Gerard to drive them to Frank’s so she could bring the photo album of herself and Frank that they’d stayed up late making a few nights before the accident. Clara began to feel like she’d known Frank personally and seemed to get as distressed about the whole situation as the other two did.
It was one particular day when Hazel had her head on the bed beside Frank and was holding both of his hands in her own, Gerard and Clara were sitting on the floor drawing each other and having a laugh about it.
“I really miss him.” Hazel sighed for the sixth time that day as she traced circles on the palm of Frank’s right hand.
Gerard stood up and helped Clara up, “Yeah, I do too. I’m so sorry.”
That was a regular thing too, Gerard apologising more than once a day for an accident that wasn’t entirely his fault.
“Don’t worry about it, saying sorry will just make you feel even worse.” Clara replied, gently touching his shoulder.
“Yeah.” Hazel agreed, standing up and walking over to the window before sitting down in the sunlight on the floor as Gerard sighed mournfully.
The others joined her and the three of them stared mournfully out the window. Nobody could think of anything to say, not that it would have made it any better anyhow.
“He’ll be fine.” Clara finally said and Gerard nodded.
“Yeah, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Frankie’s a fighter, he’ll make it and I mean it. He’s not the type to give up on the people who mean the most of them, he’d go to Hell and back for his friends.” Gerard added, then looked extremely guilty as he realized what he’d said, “Sorry, maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say, he won’t go to Hell, he’s too good even for Heaven in my opinion.”
“Nah, it’s fine,” Hazel laughed half-heartedly, “You’re right though, he is too good.”
Clara just smiled sadly as they all lapsed back into silence, watching the sun climb higher in the sky.
Hazel finally broke the silence, “I just want him back.”
But she was met by stares from the faces of the two sitting with her, confused expressions that mirrored the one plastered across her own features. Something had just happened, Hazel couldn’t quite place it, but she was pretty sure it was something bad.
Then it hit her, and she gasped. It was the steady beat of the monitor attached to Frank’s chest, the one they’d all become so accustomed to hearing that they didn’t notice it anymore. Or more, it wasn’t the beeping noise of the monitor.
It had stopped.
