Vampires Will Never Hurt You

Oh Memories, Where'd You Go?

Gerard’s POV
May 9, 2006
I walked quickly down the sidewalk next to a deserted street, a heavy backpack slung over my shoulder. I was headed to the nearest and cheapest motel I could find. Since I’m 20 and legally an adult, it’s not technically running away, but I couldn’t take it anymore.

See, I used to be suicidal. I actually tried a few times, but obviously never succeeded. Last time I tried, I took some sleeping pills and then got in the bath. Being a new vampire, I didn’t know it wouldn’t actually kill me. My parents found me right before I drowned. They never fought before that, but ever since I would hear them yelling almost every night. Every morning at breakfast I would catch one of them looking at me like I was a three-legged puppy. I know it’s because they care, but they never gave a shit before, so why now?

I’d been walking for about an hour when I decided to stop in a bar on the street corner. I sat down and ordered a beer. The bartender asked how old I was but didn’t bother to ask for my ID, so I got away with being underage. A man with curly brown hair sat down next to me and spoke. “In my opinion, Pete here is a bit too flexible when it comes to the ages of customers.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, hoping the bartender hadn’t heard him.

“I mean we both know you’re not 21. But I’ll let it slide this time, kid,” he said, downing the contents of his glass and slamming it down onto the bar.

“I’m not a kid,” I mumbled, taking a large sip of beer.

“No, that’s right, you just look like one. How old are you actually? 48? 97?” he said as Pete poured him another drink.

“I would’ve been 21 last month,” I said. I still wasn’t quite used to being the same age for the rest of my life. “Hang on, how did you know…”

He downed his drink and smiled at me. “You’re not the only vampire in town, kid,” he slurred.

“No way, I wouldn’t have guessed that when I was held down and force-fed vampire blood,” I said sarcastically, cringing at the memory of it all.

The stranger held his hands up in defense. “Hey, it wasn’t me.”

“I never said it was.”

There was an awkward silence for a few minutes before he asked me what my name was. “Gerard,” I said.

“I’m Ray,” he slurred as he finished off yet another drink. That had to have been his seventh just since I walked through the door.

“Well Ray, you’re extremely drunk, so can I take you home or something?”

“You’re drunk too, Dracula,” he said, waving Pete over.

“No, I’m not,” I stated as I finished my first and only beer. “And you,” I pointed at Pete, “don’t give him anything else to drink tonight besides water.” Pete nodded and put the bottle of liquor away.

“Who are you, my mother?” Ray scoffed.

“No, I’m the guy who’s driving you home so you don’t get arrested for driving while intoxicated. Now give me your keys.” He tried to put them in my hand but dropped them. I picked them up and helped him stand. “Come on, let’s go, Ray.”

I put him in the back of the car and sat in the driver’s seat, put the key in the ignition, and turned it. The car came to life and I turned around to ask where he lived. He mumbled the address to me and then passed out. At least it would be easier to focus on the road.

We pulled up to an apartment building five minutes later. I parked the car and tried to get Ray to wake up, but he didn’t even stir. I put my arms around his torso and dragged him out of the car. He rolled onto his side but didn’t seem to notice he was lying on cold asphalt. I got him to stand up and lean on me as I guided him to the elevator half asleep. I pushed the button for floor 3 and waited.

I left Ray propped against the wall as I unlocked the door to his apartment, then dragged him inside and put him on the sofa. I got him a glass of water and put it on the coffee table in case he woke up. I took my jacket off and tried to find a comfortable position in what seemed like the most uncomfortable chair ever. After what seemed like forever I finally fell asleep.
