Frank’s POV
I sat in the passenger seat of Gerard’s gray SUV with my hands folded in my lap.
“You shouldn’t feel guilty. She would have killed us,” Gerard said.
“I know. I just can’t stop thinking about Mikey. How are we going to tell him this? ‘Hey Mikey, Frank killed your girlfriend, but everything’s okay because she would have put an arrow through your brother’s heart otherwise!’”
“We’ll figure something out.”
It was 11:13 am; we spent the rest of the night making it look like Hayley was out hunting and fell down a hill, cracking her neck in the process. Later Gerard would compel someone to call the police, saying they found her while they were out jogging.
We walked through the door to our apartment to see Mikey pacing back and forth between the living room and kitchen, his phone in his hands.
“Everything alright, Mikes?” Gerard asked slowly.
“No, everything’s not alright. Hayley was supposed to come over two hours ago, and now she’s not answering her phone,” he said, running his hands through his hair. He grabbed his keys and put his coat on.
“Where are you going?”
“Hayley’s house, I need to make sure she’s okay.”
“Mikey, wait, we need to talk to you,” Gerard said, his eyes fixed on a spot on the floor.
“Can you make it quick? I’m going to explode if I don’t hear from Hayley soon.”
Gerard and I took a seat on the couch and he gestured for Mikey to sit as well.
“Mikey, when we were camping last night, we ran into a vampire hunter,” he began. Mikey’s eyes widened, but Gerard spoke again before he could say anything. “She shot me with an arrow; it missed my heart by less than an inch. She would have shot again and killed me if Frank hadn’t stepped in…” he trailed off, probably replaying the scene in his head.
“Well then great job, Frank, I’m glad you guys didn’t die. Can I go now?” Mikey asked, standing up.
“Mikey, sit down,” Gerard ordered with a dark and serious tone in his voice. Mikey sat back down, furrowing his eyebrows.
“She was getting ready to load another arrow but Frank…” he swallowed, “took care of her before she could.”
“Okay, I get it, you almost died but Frank saved the day. Now, I really need to go check on Hayley-”
“Hayley is dead, Mikey,” I choked out, my voice shaking. Mikey froze, staring unblinking at me.
“What did you say?”
“It’s true, Mikes,” Gerard cut in, “Hayley is… was a vampire hunter.”
“Mikey, I swear I wouldn’t have done it if I knew it was her,” I said. Mikey didn’t move; he just stared at a spot on the coffee table.
“Did she,” his voice cracked and a tear rolled down his cheek, “did she suffer?”
“I don’t think so,” Gerard said.
“How did it happen?” he asked, several more tears flowing down his cheeks.
“I snapped her neck,” I said guiltily and looked down at my feet, feeling my throat tighten. Mikey let out a sob and stood up, running straight to his room and locking the door behind him. I heard crashing and the sound of things breaking and I stood up, but Gerard stopped me before I could go any further.
“It’s alright, Frank. Just let him,” he said and went to our room. I sat back on the couch, my head in my hands, wishing more than anything that I could take it all back.
