You Only Hear The Music When Your Heart Begins To Break

Chapter Thirty Three

I wake up to a high pitch whine right before it turns into a cry. I open my eyes immediately looking to where the bassinets are needing to make sure my babies are ok. Riley is laying in his kicking his little legs and looking at the roof wide eyed and Bandits bassinet is empty. I sit up to look around for her when a sharp pain rips through my lower stomach and I slump back against the pillows. "Baby you need to move slowly. Are you ok?" Asks Gerard as he steps over and helps ease me to a sitting position, propping the pillows behind my back. I can now see Bandit who is in Donnas arms still crying. Donna rocks her back and forth gently and she soon quiets down closing her eyes and sleeping again. I smile at the sight and watch as she's put back into her bassinet.

A week later the babies and I are released to go home and I am glad to get out of the hospital. I am under strict orders to not lift anything other than the babies until I heal and the doctor gives me the all clear and to avoid any strenuous physical activity. When we get home Trick and William are there, ready to stay for a week to help me get settled while Gerard goes back to his classes. We don't have a guest room anymore but they say they are fine sleeping on the fold out couch in the living room.
The first few days without Gerard are tough but I adjust quickly and I am very thankful that Bandit and Riley are easy kids who hardly ever cry and that when one cries it doesn't set the other off. I adapt to diaper changes and being covered in spit up surprisingly well but Gerard still struggles with the diapers. Whenever he tries I can't help but giggle as it falls apart and whichever baby he is trying to change just kicks their legs and looks like they want to laugh too.

A month passes and Gerard is done with school for six weeks. We decide to rent a car and travel home for a week. The week passes surprisingly quickly and before we know it we are back home settling into our routine again. The doctor has finally given me the all clear and when the babies and I get home from our checkup Gerard helps me put them down for a nap in their cribs, setting up the baby monitor and dragging me into our bedroom. I open my mouth to ask what he's doing but he seals his mouth over mine in a fevered kiss and it becomes obvious what he wants. I smile into the kiss and melt into Gerard's touch as he removes my clothing, throwing it across the room before I start on his. Once we're naked we fall onto the bed and our hands explore each other's bodies. The sex is fast and frantic but it is the first time we have had sex in almost two months and neither of us are bothered that it was over quicker than normal. We lay together on the bed panting to catch our breaths when we hear a gurgle through the baby monitor. I roll my head to look at Gerard and he's looking back at me smiling before we drag ourselves off the bed, me throwing on a robe and tying it closed while Gerard pulls on boxers and we stop by the bathroom to wash our hands before walking into the baby's room and finding both of them awake staring out through the bars of their cribs. I walk over and pick up Riley and he gurgles to me before his mouth pulls up in his first real smile. Gerard is watching us and his face pulls into a matching smile before he turns to walk over to Bandits crib. She kicks her legs and lets out a little impatient squeal so Gerard chuckles and leans down to pick her up cuddling her to his chest. I check Riley's diaper before settling in the rocking chair and feeding him. While I'm feeding Gerard checks Bandits diaper and changes it having finally gotten the hang of it. Once Riley is done I pass him to Gerard while taking Bandit to start feeding her while Gerard burps Riley. After their feeding the babies go back in their cribs and I sing softly to them until they fall asleep again. Gerard and I stand at the doorway to the room hand in hand as we watch our babies sleep feeling like the luckiest people in the whole world.
