Thick As Thieves [Mikey Way]

Chapter Sixteen

“Drew. Drew, come on.”

For the second time, Mikey’s voice woke me up.

Of course we were sharing a bed.
I just seemed to sleep better with him around.

I sat up and wiped my eyes, feeling that they were wet.

I looked at Mikey and he smiled slightly.

“You had another nightmare…” he said quietly.

I sighed and laid back to find that my pillow was soaked with my tears too.

“Did I start talking again?” I asked and he nodded.

“You just said ‘It’s a Disaster. Forever After.’ Over and over again.” He told me and I bit my lip.

“Try and go back to sleep, okay?” He told me and I sighed, nodding.

Soon enough, Mikey was asleep with his arms around me.

I just couldn’t seem to drift away though.

Eventually, getting sick of the musty smell of wood desperately fighting time to not rot and the cream coloured ceiling, I carefully moved out of Mikey’s grip and grabbed my jacket before walking outside to the old wooden balcony that probably wasn’t at all stable.

I sighed, leaning on the old wooden railing and looking over at the trees.
They stretched for miles before an abrupt stop where the city began.

I let my head hang down between my arms and let out a breath.

The sun was just setting over the city silhouette that was just a few miles away.

“Shouldn’t you be asleep?”

I turned and rested my back against the old creaking railing, seeing Gerard smoking a cigarette.

“I could say the same thing to you, you know?” I said, offering a smile that he returned.

He took one last drag before stamping out his cigarette that he must have had been smoking for a bit before and nodded with a chuckle.

“Probably. I’ll ask another way. Why can’t you sleep?” he asked and I sighed, turning around again and looking over the edge.

“Just stuff.” I said with a sigh.

Gerard walked over and stood next to me, leaning on the almost-certainly unstable wooden railing.

“What kinda stuff?” He asked and I sighed, shaking my head.

“This place just brings back memories… My sister and I jumped off her with beach umbrellas once, you know? I broke both my ankles and my arm. She broke both arms and her leg. We gave our parents hell, we did…” I said with a small smile, staring over the edge.

I sighed and looked down.

Gerard gave me a half-hearted smile and rubbed my back.

My head hung between my arms again d I bit my lip.

I shook my head quickly after a little and looked up.

“So what about you? Why can’t you sleep?” I asked and he shrugged.

“I dunno.” He said and I rolled my eyes.

“I have a story and youre just like ‘I dunno’. Thanks dick.” I said and he laughed a little.

“I don’t have a real reason. I just can’t.” He said and I nodded.

“I know that feeling.” I said and sighed.

He nodded and sighed too.

“They would have been proud of you… if you don’t mind me saying. Youre an amazing girl… I know why Mikey has fallen head over heels for you.” He said, hesitating before telling me about Mikey.

I just shook my head.

“He hasn’t. I know.” I said, lifting my head up and looking at him.

He smiled slightly.

“Of course you don’t believe you. You don’t see it.” He said and sighed. “Mikey sure does. He adores you.”

I just sighed and shook my head again.

“Guys don’t like me, dude. Something about a girl being able to kick their ass blindfolded and with one hand tied behind their back kinda scares them off. Trust me. I would know.” I said and sighed.

Gerard looked at me.

“Well, they’re fucking idiots.” He said, brushing my hair out of my blue eyes. “Besides, what makes you think Mikey would be anything like those guys? Remember what we are, Drew.”

I sighed and nodded slightly.
He had a good point.

“Whatever. Anyway, I think Mikey has more common sense than to fall for me. Not right now anyway.” I said.
Love is something that could get you killed WITHOUT being chased by vampires.
Imagine the risk now.

Gerard sighed.

“You can’t control when or where you fall for someone.” He told me and I shrugged.

“Still…”

Gerard just sighed and shook his head.

“Goodnight, Drew.” He said, walking back inside.

I blinked a few times and watched the sun go down before walking back inside about an hour later.
