Never Coming Home

When He Thought Things Went Downhill

Frank's POV

"Run!" shouts Susan, and we do. We flee faster than we've ever fled before. Turning through winding corners, trying to loose the man chasing us through the crowded streets. Shxt.
But he's still chasing us, everyone else however seems confused.
"Kom terug, jij vuile jood!" he shouts, but I have no idea what he's saying. I can only assume...
But finally we loose him for a bit behind a turn.
"Quick, run past the other corner." I say to her. Her eyes are full of fear, and she does as I tell her, hiding from sight. But soon the man catches up with us.
"Waar is de Jood?!" he shouts angrily. But we have to act as normal as possible.
"Sorry?" I ask, not speaking German.
"Where's the Jew?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about? We were just looking after our niece. We're not Jewish, neither is she."
"I saw her! I swear I did!" he looks furious, we have to play every move from here carefully.
"Sir, we're American. We're just visiting. Do you really think we'd be Jewish? Have you ever seen us at the registration office before?" asks Susan.
He shakes his head, his fists trembling.
"Exactly. Now why would our niece be Jewish?"
He rolls his eyes in defeat and walks off without saying another word.
"You can come out, now." says Luce. The little girl peeks out from the shadows and walks out.
"I told you it was a bad idea."
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"You know what, why don't we just take you to the hotel?" asks Susan.
"I was told to not go to stranger's houses."
"Come on." I say, chuckling. "If we were dangerous, we would've let that man take you."
She smiles and shrugs, giving in. "Alright."
But then I start to wonder if we should just bring her to Gerard straight away. "Hold on, Susan and Lucy, come here." I say, and we walk a few steps away, so the kid doesn't hear what we're saying.
"Should Gerard know?"
"Of course." says Lucy. "It's his child."
"But what if it's too much for him at once? He's kind of overwhelmed with everything right now."
"But what if he were to find out that we've been keeping this secret from him? What do you think he would do then?" Counters Susan.
"Fine. We'll take her to Gerard. But then what? Would we just bring her back? How? What happens next?"
she sighs. "Please, Frank? This is what he came all this way for. What's the point in coming if we aren't going to eventually let him know?"
I guess she's right. We would have come for no reason if we didn't tell him we found her.

Gerard's POV

I'm at the hotel, waiting anxiously at the desk. I'm the only one here. I never liked being alone, and know I've been left here for the last hour.
I really don't know why we're still here. How do we expect to find one tiny person in a crowd of thousands? There's no hope. None.
At least when the three of them come back I won't be alone. I'll still have my companions. But what if they die, too? What if they get mixed up in a bad situation? Death does seem to have a funny way of finding me.
I have to stop thinking about this. I'm overthinking again, and that's never good. I have to think about something else.
I wonder what happened to Hannah. Is she doing ok? She probably hasn't been let out from the institution, but all in all I feel bad for her. They put her into a horrible asylum for what purpose? For being distraught about a horrific scene she encountered? Mad world...
But then I hear the click of the lock, and the door opening.
"Hello?" I say, wondering who it is.
"Hello." I hear Frank's voice emerge from the quiet. "We're back."
Fantastic, I finally have other people here with me.
"Gerard..." I hear Susan say. "We have something to tell you."
Great. I have a feeling something's gone wrong...
"Yes?"
"Actually...just come here." I stand up from the seat I was in, walking out into the main room, and I see a little girl, with Susan's hand on her shoulders.
"Who's this?" I ask, walking over to her.
"Hello...I'm Alice."

Notes

Sorry I've been late on the uploads, been caught up with the other story I'm writing, too. I'll try to update as possible, but with the current situation, I doubt it'll be that often. Happy reading. ^_^
