Desolation Row

Come Away With Innocence

Patrick and Pete burst through the double doors of the building, the sunlight flooding down from the sky as they walked out into the open arms of freedom. “We made it” Pete cried, throwing his arms around Patrick as tears of relief began pouring from his eyes. Patrick pulled him in, kissing him firmly on the lips as he ran his fingers through Pete’s dark, unkempt hair. A wave of love surged over him. He never wanted to lose this man again. “I love you Pete” He said softly, looking up into his lovers eyes as he spoke. Pete smiled, opening his mouth to speak before he was quickly interrupted by a loud clap.

Jane slowly emerged from the darkness of the building, a twisted smile sprawled across her blood splattered face. “Hate to break up this...fag gathering but we have some business to attend to” She said eerily, pulling out a gun from her back pocket. Patrick’s eyes grew wide in horror; fear coursing through his veins as Pete suddenly grabbed his hand. “RUN” He screamed, running with him away from Jane as she shot at them, narrowly missing them as they ran down the empty road. The boys kept running, a pain flaring in Patrick’s chest as he breathlessly ran aimlessly with his boyfriend through the desolate street. “Where the fuck are we?” Pete cried, frantically looking around for any signs of life. Another gun shot rang out, sending them once again running for their lives.

Pete dragged Patrick down the road, his eyes desperately searching for help. “I’m coming for you boys” Jane’s voice echoed down the street which was quickly followed by a frightening laugh close behind them. Pete suddenly stopped; his heart sank as his eyes fell upon the end of the road. They were standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff with no way out. Patrick followed his gaze, squeezing his boyfriends hand as he began to panic. “What are we going to do...Pete? Pete come on we need to get away from here” Patrick pleaded, tugging on his arm. Pete stared hopelessly out at the horizon, listening to the wave’s crash against the cliff face below them.

“End of the line boys” Jane said, standing behind them. Patrick jumped, slowly backing towards the edge of the cliff. Pete grabbed his arm, holding him in place as he stared angrily back at Jane. “It’s not too late Patrick, we can still be together” She added coldly, aiming the gun at him. Patrick shook his head, pushing Pete aside as he faced her. “You don’t get it do you, I don’t love you Jane. I never have and I never will” He growled, locking eyes with her as he spoke. She sighed, swallowing the lump that was rising in her throat. “Pity” She said, slowly shaking her head as she fired the gun.

Pete suddenly jumped, lunging himself in front of Patrick before falling to the floor. He stood up, gazing over at Patrick whose face had filled with terror. “Are you ok?” He cried, a sharp, excruciating pain rising in his abdomen. He placed his hand on his stomach, blood pouring from the gunshot wound as the world began to spin. He staggered back, staring at Patrick as he toppled over the cliff. “NO” Patrick screamed, reaching out to grab Pete but it was too late; watching as Pete hit the water, disappearing into the dark blue abyss beneath them.

Patrick turned back to face Jane, a tear trailing down his cheek as he stared at her horrified face. She quickly aimed the gun at him, her hand shaking as she opened her mouth to speak. Patrick shook his head, his hands curling into fists. “You can’t have me” He said softly. Patrick stood on the edge of the cliff, shivering in his black skinny jeans and leather jacket. The wind whipped through his hair as his eyes focused up on the horizon; watching the sun dip behind the ocean for one last time. He looked down and found himself staring into the abyss. The dark waters churned below him, crashing against the cliff face, almost enticing him to jump.

A tear trailed down his bruised cheek as he ran a hand through his hair, bracing himself for the inevitable. He couldn’t live like this, not anymore, not without him.

The fear which coursed through his veins, haunted his thoughts and clouded around his heart was too much to bear. He had to switch it off, there was no other choice; no going back now. He took a deep breath. Closing his eyes, he saw Pete one last time; remembering back to when they were kids, playing light saber battles in the back garden, Pete always had to be the Jedi. He smiled half heartily at that memory, the tears flooding down his face. Inside, Patrick screams and screams; pounding his fist against his forehead. All he wants is pain.

Nobody ever told him that one day he is going to lose everything has. Nothing prepared him for that day.

Not faith…

Not religion…

Nothing.

As he stood there, the memories of Pete death flooding through his mind, all he knew emptiness. For now, he finally understood what it is to be completely and utterly alone.

Never to forget and never to forgive.

“May God grant you the mercy that I cannot?" He muttered as he felt his fingers curl up into fists, digging his nails into his palms as he stepped over the edge.

Jane stood there, breathless as she watched Patrick jump off the edge of the building. She collapsed to the floor, tears flooding down her face as she refused to believe what she had seen. Jane slowly rose to her feet and stared unemotionally at the cliff edge, the rain beginning to thunder down on top of her, washing Gerard’s blood from her body. “Freeze!” A loud voice shouted from behind her. She slowly turned and saw two police officers standing before her with a swat team close behind them. “Jane please put the gun down.” DCI Sam Tyler said softly. Jane said nothing, smiling as she whipped the gun out in front of her, shooting the officer in the shoulder. The swat team fired upon her, shooting her in the chest.

She fell to the floor, smiling as she gazed up at the sky one last time, blood gushing from her chest as she began to bleed out. “Forgive me...” She whispered as the world faded to black.

“If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever.”
