The End is Easier
As You're Falling Down
"So, how did today's session with Mr.Way go?"
My mother stared up at me from her vegetable stir fry.
She had gotten today off work, so we decided to order Chinese food for dinner.
"It was okay."
I quickly went back to eating my rice.
"He prescribed me medication."
I pulled out the scrunched up paper from my pocket and handed it to my mother.
She looked over it intently.
"He wants me to start it as soon as possible."
She folded the paper into a nice small square and put it in her own pocket.
"Frankie, we have to talk."
Her voice changed from caring to stern.
I put my fork down and listened, hoping that she hadn't found the stash of vodka in my bedroom.
I swallowed hard.
"Its been ten years dear."
I could see tears beginning to build up around her eyes.
I had almost forgot. Ten years? That didn't seem right.
It felt like just yesterday when his trial had ended and he was sentenced to ten years in prison.
I realized a single tear was making its way down my cheek.
I put my hand over my mothers.
"Don't cry."
I tried my best to be brave and comfort her
My father hadn't just fucked up my life, he had also fucked up my mothers. Leaving us both mentally and fiscally scarred.
He would abuse her, with words, and his fists.
"Mom, he can't do anything to us. And even if he tried he'd be thrown back in jail."
She wiped her eyes and grabbed my hands.
"I love you Franklin."
She only ever called me by my first name when things were serious.
I squeezed her hands.
"I love you to mom."
I pulled her into a tight hug.
I felt her begin to sob silently.
"Shhhhhh."
I whispered into her hair.
She broke out of the hug.
"Let's clear up these dishes."
I nodded and picked up both of our plates and silver wear.
I followed her into the kitchen. I loaded our plates into the dishwasher.
My mom was putting the spaghetti into a container.
I heard her sniffle.
"Mom?"
I heard her sniffle again.
"Mom its ok."
I rubbed her back.
"Frankie, I just don't want him to hurt you again."
She and I both stopped what we were doing.
"What do you mean?"
"Frankie."
I stepped back.
"Don't say Frankie. Tell me what's happening."
She turned around to look me in the eye.
"Frank, he's fighting for custody."
I couldn't breath.
It felt as if someone had hit me in the chest.
I stumbled backwards, but stopped when I hit the counter.
I didn't say anything. I just stared at her, my mouth agape.
I couldn't speak. I felt faint, I gripped the sides of the counter.
"Frankie?"
I could hear my mom but I couldn't respond.
I saw little gold sparks begin to fog my vision.
My breath quickened and everything went black.
