Hold on Till May
Chapter 38: So Long & Goodnight
Gerard P.O.V.
The next morning we woke up really early for breakfast at the hotel.
Apparently Irmarie had gotten a phone around the last day of school before Spring Break and she never told anyone about it.
"Sorry, Gee. I'm used to using my phone yet." Irmarie sheepishly smiled.
The reason I found out was because she had turned on her phone this morning and there was a lot of beeps from all the text messages she has gotten from her family.
As we finished eating, we head back to the car. I turned on the car and let it warm up for a moment.
"New Jersey?" I asked her.
"Yeah. I keep getting text messages from my brothers." Irmarie said looking down at her phone.
"Yeah, I should probably turn my phone on..." I said.
When my phone was loaded, it kept beeping from all the messages I had, like Irmarie's.
They were from Mom, Dad, and Mikey. Well, mostly Mikey because Mom and Dad can barley text.
'dude where are you?' That was from Mikey.
'Gerard, please come back.' That was from Mom.
'Please come back with Irmarie.' That was from Dad.
I guess this whole running away thing was a bad idea. But I knew Irmarie just had to get out of her house for a day. To get away for a little while.
"Getting text message?" Irmarie asked.
"Yeah." I said putting my phone away.
"Yeah. Come on, let's head back to Jersey." Irmarie said.
------------------
The ride to Jersey was faster than going from Jersey to New York. But then again, aren't all trips like that?
We arrived to Irmarie's house an hour later.
"I don't want to go in." Irmarie said looking down at her hands.
"Come on, Irmarie. We ran away for a day or so. They probably miss you so much." I said.
"Yeah but... what if they don't." Irmarie whispered.
You can feel how sad she was. I looked at the Hale's home. Funny how homes look friendly and welcoming on the outside, but on the inside you really didn't know what was really going on.
"You're their sister, Irmarie. They really do care about you." I said to her.
"If they do care, I'd be dead and they'll bury me six feet underground." She gave a small, sad laugh.
"Come on," I said.
We both got out of the car and ran to the house. Just as Irmarie was about to knock the door, I stopped her.
"I have to go see my family, okay." I said. She nodded and I ran to my house.
I looked at the door for a couple of seconds before knocking.
I heard footsteps come to the door and it opened.
"G-Gerard." Mom said.
"Hey, Mom." I sheepishly smiled.
She pulled me in for a big bear hug.
"I missed you so much, don't ever do that again!" She said.
I heard more footsteps come to the door.
"Gerard?" I heard Mikey say.
"Mikey? What are you doing here, shouldn't you be at school?" I asked him.
Mikey ran to me and hugged me, "shut up." He said.
"Where's Dad?" I asked Mom.
"He went to work. Oh, I should go call him!" Mom said and ran to the kitchen.
"You're an idiot," Mikey said as we broke the hug.
"Jeez, I love you too?" I laughed.
"Please don't do that again! You know you're really crazy sometimes!" Mom called as she came in to the hallway and hugged me again. "And you're grounded too." She smiled.
"Nice welcome gift." I sarcastically said.
"For two weeks, Gerard." Mom said.
Mom and Dad usually ground me for a whole month. And the fact that they decided two weeks was perfectly fine to me.
I took my phone out of my pocket and handed it over to Mom.
I wonder how Irmarie's family is taking it. Are they mad at her? I'm not sure if she usually does this, but I tell you she's more crazy than I am.
"Want to see how Irmarie's doing?" I asked Mikey.
"How long ago did you guys came here?" Mikey asked.
"A couple." I said.
"Give it time, dude." Mikey said.
Mikey and I watched t.v. in the living room until an hour passed and there was a knock on the door.
"Mikey. Get it. Now." I said with my gaze at the t.v.
"Gerard. You. Go." Mikey mimic me.
"Boys! Go get the door!" Mom had called from the living room.
"Mom! Door!" Mikey and I called.
I heard Mom huffed from the laundry room.
"Lazy asses." Mom muttered as she passed us.
"Uh, hey Donna..." I heard Irmarie said.
My attention wasn't on the t.v. anymore. I stood up and walked over there.
Mikey had kicked me in the ass. I flipped him off and he called me a bitch. Brotherly love.
"Hey Irmarie." I smiled.
Mom went back to the laundry room.
"Uh, hey, Gee." Irmarie said.
"What's wrong?" I asked seeing she was quiet.
"Uh, tomorrow is Saturday..." Irmarie said.
Saturday... I thought about it for a second then remembered tomorrow they buried her dad.
I pulled Irmarie for a hug.
"I... I guess I can't avoid it." Irmarie quietly said into my chest.
I'm not sure how Irmarie and her dad were close, but I know they were really close. I know for a fact that it really hasn't hit her that her mother might never wake up from the coma, considering that she had fainted before the doctors told the news to Vinny.
There was high possibility that Rosa was never going to wake up from the coma, and if she did, she was going to suffer memory lost.
"Hey, why don't we all go out to see a movie or something." I said.
"Okay." Irmarie agreed.
We phoned Venus, Frank, Ray, Christa, Alicia, and Jamia. We all went to see Mama, people around school said it was supposedly scary. Scary my ass, didn't scare us one bit!
Irmarie slept over at her house that night because they had to wake up tomorrow for their dad's funeral.
At night, I thought of how I would of handle that situation. I think I would of handle it differently than they are handling it. I would of gone crazy, hell, I might do something to myself like start drinking heavily.
That scared me. I had a cousin who died from alcohol poisoning.
My thoughts went to the old me. The me before Christmas break.
I remembered on how much I hated Mikey. I'm not sure why, I just did. I remembered how I treated Frank like shit. It was awful.
I started remembering how I would go to parties every Friday and Saturday night. How I would get drunk often and how I ended up having a big hangover the next day and how Mom and Dad would be mad and ashamed of me.
And no matter how much they said they were never ashamed of me being their son, they were. They would just say that so I wouldn't feel bad about myself.
I guess you can say I was a real fuck-up, no matter how much I'll deny it in my future, I will always be a fucked-up child. But I'm getting better now.
I finally let sleep drag me in.
I quickly walked to the Hale's household. There was more cars outside than usual.
I knocked on the door. It opened, Frank stood there with one of his hands down his pockets and the other on the door knob.
"Hey." He said quietly and stood aside to let me in.
The atmosphere felt gloomy. It was quiet, which was a little bit discomfort because it was always loud and full with life over here.
I walked to the living room. In there was Mrs. and Mr. Iero sitting on the couch. Mrs. Iero now had her belly bigger, I wonder how many months is she in.
Vinny and Star were sitting on the other couch. Vinny was silently crying to himself as Star comforting him.
"She's in her room." Frank said.
I nodded and he took a seat next to his mom. I headed to her room, which is one the first floor, and knocked on the door.
"Go away." Irmarie said.
"It's me." I said.
"Come in." She said.
I opened the door. Irmarie was laying down on the bed with Moon in her arms. She had on a black dress. On her desk were a lot of pictures scattered all over the place. Some were on the desk, others were on the floor around her bed.
I carefully walked over to Irmarie. I picked up the photos on the floor on the way. When I sat down, I looked over the photos.
Photo number one was one of Irmarie when she was seven, her mom had her on her lap as she helped her blow out the big candle in the form of a seven. In the background you can see her dad laughing at how cute it was.
Photo number two was one of the whole family in Disney World. Irmarie was on her dad's shoulder with a balloon, big smile on her face. Robin was giving what looks like Rocky a piggy back ride and Vinny and Spike were sitting on the ground. Behind them was Cinderella's castle standing tall.
Photo number three was an old picture. The date said 1977. There was a woman in a white dress, this must be Rosa, and there was a man next to her, it was Kurt. They were both smiling at their wedding.
Photo number four was one of Irmarie in a big, puffy, red dress. Her hair was up and curled. She was hugging her dad and I'm pretty sure they were dancing. There was a lot of people around them. I tried to think of what these types of parties were called. I know it had something to do with fifteen...
"That was from my quincenera." Irmarie said.
I looked at her, she was now sitting up.
"I was dancing with my dad." She said.
There was a knock on the door.
"Hey, come on, we're leaving." I heard Spike say.
Irmarie sighed and let go of Moon. Moon walked over to his little bed and laid down. I set the photos on her desk and walked out with her to the car.
-----------------
Irmarie held on to my hand as she set a rose down on her father's coffin. She wasn't sobbing as much as her brothers were, but I knew she wanted to so badly.
A few tears will roll down her cheeks during the ceremony. There was a lot of people here.
In the end, when they started lowering the coffin, Irmarie began to sob. Since I was taking her home, Irmarie asked if she could stay here a little longer. Her brothers were now back home, trying to warm up.
It was cold out here in the cemetery and it was cloudy too, typical Jersey.
After an hour out here alone, Irmarie stood up.
"So long, and goodnight." She whispered.
I held her hand and we walked to the car.
The next morning we woke up really early for breakfast at the hotel.
