Hold on Till May
Chapter 34: The Good Vs. the Bad
Gerard P.O.V.
I woke up first before Irmarie did.
I saw that her black shirt with two dinosaurs on it was kind of loose on her. I gave a sad sigh that the only reason why her shirt was loose on her was because she wasn't eating at all. After all, Irmarie was in her room for four days straight.
I gently grabbed both of her wrist and looked for any new scars. So far there was none and I was very proud of her.
Last night, before Irmarie had opened the door for me, Robin told me that the funeral for Kurt was next Saturday. That was just a week and a day away.
Robin told me also why the funeral was next Saturday was because they didn't have the money for the funeral and they didn't want to use Irmarie's collage money either. So, Robin, Amy, Rocky, Vinny, and Spike are all trying to quickly earn about two thousand dollars for the funeral.
Funerals cost a lot, believe me.
They are also trying to pay Rosa's life insurance since she's in a coma and hospitals are expensive fuckers.
It really did make me feel very sad that the Hales had to go through all of this.
They're really nice people and yet they have to suffer more. Why do nice people suffer a lot more?
Robin also told me that the whole family was going to help pay for the expensive and taxes and things like that.
This must be really hard for them all to be honest.
Irmarie muttered something and hugged me tighter.
I wonder what she's dreaming about.
"No!" Irmarie said and quickly sat up.
"Are you okay?" I asked as I sat up.
She was breathing heavily as she sat there. "N-no." Irmarie muttered and began to cry.
I pulled her for a hug. I'm guessing she was dreaming about her Mom and Dad. I let Irmarie cry herself out.
"S-sorry I wet your shirt." Irmarie said as she pulled away from the hug.
"I don't mind it." I said wiping away her tears.
"W-what time is it?" Irmarie asked.
"Probably ten." I said. "Lets go to the living room."
Irmarie nodded and we both walked to the living room. It was Friday, everyone but Coco and Star was at work.
Coco and Star saw Irmarie and hugged her.
"I'm glad you're out." Coco said.
"You didn't do anything to yourself?" Star asked and she looked at Irmarie's wrist.
"No. I didn't walk for four days, that's all." Irmarie said.
"Come on, lets get you something to eat." I said.
"But I'm not hungry." Irmarie muttered.
I grabbed her hand and walked to the kitchen.
Irmarie sat down on the chair.
"You have to eat. You haven't eaten in four days and that shirt is getting big for you." I said.
"Well, doesn't everyone want to have a skinny girl." Irmarie muttered.
"But I want you to be healthy. I don't want you to become anorexic." I said.
Irmarie looked at me and then at her hands.
"Do it for your Dad." I said.
There was silence in the room for a moment. Coco and Star were still in the living room, not wanting to come into the kitchen.
I sighed and walked up to her, leaned in and kissed her.
"Please." I said into her lips.
Irmarie sighed. I took it as a yes. I made Irmarie some cereal since that is mostly the only thing I can cook for breakfast.
When I set it down for her, she just eyed it. She didn't even pick up the spoon or attempt to do it.
"Can I just have water?" Irmarie asked after a while.
I sighed and got her water. "But please eat." I said.
"I don't want to eat." Irmarie said and quickly drank her water.
"Eat at least two spoonfuls and then you can leave." I said.
"Just two?" Irmarie asked.
"Just two."
"Fine."
Irmarie grabbed the spoon and ate the cereal.
"Okay, I'm done!" Irmarie said after she ate two spoonfuls and ran to her room.
"Don't make yourself throw up either!" I called and I ran to the room.
"Fine." Irmarie muttered and laid on her bed.
Moon climbed the bed and Irmarie hugged him.
"Why do you insist on staying with me? I'm a boring motherfucker. Go have fun while your Spring Break last. You only have this weekend." Irmarie said.
"I prefer you over Spring Break." I said as I laid down next to her.
"Why?" Irmarie said as we looked at the ceiling.
"Because, you mean the world to me." I said holding her hand.
"How is that possible?" She asked.
"You show me things I never imagine I would like." I said.
"You could of done that on your own." Irmarie muttered.
"I'll tell you something. But, you have to keep it a secret from the jocks." I said.
"Why?" Irmarie asked.
"Lets say they'll start calling me a geek." I said. "Well, I like to draw things and I'm sort of good at it. And, I've secretly love comic books since the eight grade."
"Why do that?" Irmarie asked.
"Well, since I started hanging out with Giovanni and Gabe, they thought people who read comics were either gay, geeks, nerds, and other bullshit like that." I said thinking of their voices in my head.
"Well, they're idiots." Irmarie said.
"Yeah. But, I'm a bigger idiot for following their footsteps and not being myself." I sighed. "And don't say it's not true, 'cause it is."
Irmarie sighed.
"But, you've changed. A lot." Irmarie said.
"And thanks to you I'm finding out who I really am." I said.
Irmarie turned to her side to face me.
"Why are you giving me all the credit when it's all you." Irmarie said.
"Because it's true. I wouldn't have done it all on my own." I said.
"Don't say that." Irmarie said.
I turned to my side and faced her. "But it's true." I said.
Moon meowed at us.
"Not sure what Moon is trying to say." Irmarie said looking at Moon.
"He's probably saying: 'Give me food, human!'" I laughed and Irmarie laughed.
"Alright, lets give food to Moon." Irmarie said as she sat up. "Wow! That's the first time a laughed in about four days."
"I'm proud of you." I said kissing her forehead.
"Why is that?" She asked.
"You stayed strong." I said.
"No I didn't." Irmarie protested.
"But you did." I said.
"Gerard, I stayed in my room for four days without eating or drinking or sleeping. I literally made a bet with myself that dehydration or suffocation was going to kill me first. Trust me, I'm not that strong." Irmarie said and left the room.
I sat there wondering how she really felt. I know she's depressed, but, there has to be more to it. And you know what, I'll never know what she feels. But I do know we both have one thing in common as of right now, and that is that we both have broken hearts.
I stayed with Irmarie all thought Spring Break.
It was now Sunday night and Mom called me to go back home to get my things.
"How is she doing?" Mom asked as I got my clothes ready.
"Not taking it well. When she got the news she locked herself in her room for four days." I said closing my bag.
Mom walked into my room and sat down on my bed. "It must be really hard for her. Who's going to take care of her now?" Mom asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"She's still seventeen. Her Dad died, her Mom can't take care of her anymore. She has no parent and is a minor still." Mom said.
"They aren't going to take her. Are they?" I asked hoping it was a no.
"Not unless one of her brothers or family members take her in a guardian until she turns eighteen." Mom said.
Irmarie was close to turning eighteen. I know for a fact her birthday is in May and it's March, meaning she has about two months left being seventeen.
"They're going through so much, Mom. I mean, the whole family is trying not to use Irmarie's collage money for the funeral." I said.
"I thought they already buried Kurt. When are they burying him?" Mom asked.
"This Saturday." I said.
Mom nodded.
"Are you going to stay tonight with her?" Dad asked as he walked into my room with Mikey.
"Yeah." I said while putting my textbooks in my book bag.
"Is she going to school tomorrow? I don't blame her if she doesn't." Mikey asked.
"I don't think so. The farthest she has gone out of her room is when I make her eat." I said.
"Make her eat?" Mom asked.
"She refuses to eat." I said as I zip up my book bag. "I'm off. See you guys tomorrow."
I woke up in the morning. Irmarie was up too.
"You're up early." I said.
"Who said I slept." Irmarie said.
"You didn't sleep at all?" I asked as I sat up.
"Sort of... maybe." Irmarie said as she rubbed her eyes.
"Irmarie, why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
"Well, you have school and I didn't want to wake you up." Irmarie said and sighed.
"Irmarie," I whispered and tucked some of her hair behind her ear.
"I know." Irmarie muttered. "I'm not going to school today. Is that okay?" She asked.
"It's fine. Get some sleep for me. Okay?" I said.
"Okay." Irmarie said.
I gently held her face and kissed her. "I love you." I said.
"I love you, too," Irmarie said.
I smiled and gave her one more kiss before I left the room to get ready. I quickly ate breakfast and ran to the bus stop.
At the bus stop, Mikey, Venus, and Frank were already there.
"Hey, Gerard." Frank greeted.
They all looked behind me. "No Irmarie?" Venus asked.
"Uh, did you guys tell her?" I asked.
"Oh, no..." Mikey said.
"Tell me what?" Venus asked.
"Um. Irmarie's Dad died and her Mom is in a coma." Frank whispered to Venus.
"I'm really sorry I asked..." Venus whispered.
"It's fine. You didn't know." I said.
The whole day was sort of gloomy. Jamia and Alicia were less energetic than usual. Austin and his crew sat with us at lunch.
"I don't blame her." Austin said at lunch time. "I lost my Mom a couple of months ago. But I guess it was better for her to go, too. It's like one of my favorite songs, Amelia by Tonight Alive, says: 'Earth's just not the place for an angel like you.'"
We all stayed silent after Austin said that.
When the bell rang, we all left to our classes. And since it was Block Day again, Literature/English was my last class of the day.
All during the day I kept wondering why did the bad things happen to good people and why do all the good things happen to bad people. Doesn't make sense to me.
Mr. Kyle dismissed us from class. I stayed behind.
"Some thing wrong, Gerard?" Mr. Kyle asked.
"I've been wondering about something, Mr. Kyle." I said.
Mr. Kyle nodded and I continued.
"Well. Why do bad things happen to good people?" I asked.
Mr. Kyle thought for a moment.
"I think," Mr. Kyle began after a moment of silence, "that's what makes them a good person in the first place. Not sure if you've heard of this quote but I will say it to you: 'The loneliest people are the kindest. The saddest people smile the brightest. The most damaged people are the wisest. All because they do not wish to see anyone else suffer the way they do.'"
"Who said that?" I asked.
"Anonymous." He said.
