Hold on Till May
Chapter 31: Grandma Helena
Irmarie P.O.V.
"Good morning, Moon." I said to Moon.
For the past week, Moon has been sleeping with me. I don't mind it at all.
Moon meowed me a good morning.
"Come on, Moon. Lets go get you some food." I said and held Moon.
I walked to the kitchen and set Moon down. I went and picked up his food and served him.
"Now it's time for my food." I said as I got two slices of bread.
Star and Coco were going to be with us this afternoon. Everyone went to go work.
"I should really get a job." I said to Moon. "Do you think I should get a job, Moon?"
He meowed as I put the bread in the toaster.
"I wish I can understand animals. That will be so awesome." I said and sat next to Moon.
I petted Moon as he ate. I looked around and saw the clock said two pm.
"Maybe I should call Gerard." I said.
I looked around for the house phone and dial his number. He didn't pick up. I called him again and he still didn't pick up.
"Hm. Must be busy." I shrugged and set the phone aside.
The toaster popped, making me jump. "Holy shit, they should reinvent the toasters to stop doing that or else I'll have a heart attack!" I said to Moon.
I grab a plate and put the toast and grabbed the Nutella and a butter-knife. Just as I was going to put some Nutella on my toast, I heard a knock on the back door.
"Hm. Who can that be, Moon?" I asked.
I walked to the door and looked through the little window and saw Gerard.
When I opened the door, he hugged me.
"I miss you too?" I said.
He hugged me and began to cry.
"Gerard, what's wrong?" I asked as I pulled him in and closed the door.
I never seen Gerard cry.
Gerard said something, but it was hard to understand. Instead of asking him again, I just let him cry.
"Come on, Gee. Lets sit." I said.
We sat on the ground. Well, I sat on the ground, Gerard sat on my lap and cried into my chest.
"What's wrong?" I asked after a while.
"G-Grandma d-died." Gerard sobbed.
"What!?" I said in shocked.
"Grandma H-Helena d-died." He repeated.
Why did Grandma Helena die? Looked great when we went to go visit her. But then again, that was about two weeks ago.
"I'm sorry." I said.
I let a few tears fall. I knew I was going to cry, but I told myself to stay strong for Gerard.
"I-I know guys shouldn't cry." Gerard sobbed.
"It's fine to cry, Gee." I said. "Cry all the tears. Don't bottle them."
Gerard began to sob more into my chest.
I really can't believe Grandma Helena died. It's one of those things where it happens but you just can't believe it and you don't want to believe it. At all.
If I felt like that, imagine Gerard.
I know Gerard hasn't talked to me about Grandma Helena much, but while I was there, I knew Grandma Helena and Gerard were really close together.
"H-her funeral is t-today a-at four." Gerard said after a while of sobbing.
"I'll be there with you, okay," I whispered.
Moon started walking to Gerard and sat in his lap and rested his head on Gerard's stomach and started to purr.
"Look, he's trying to comfort you." I said to Gerard.
Gerard looked at Moon and gave a sad smile. "Yeah. Moon does a good job at that." He said and held Moon like a little kid with his teddy bear.
"When did you find out?" I asked.
"Last night. I haven't gotten some sleep since then." Gerard said.
"Come on then. Lets get you to bed." I said.
"I don't want to go to sleep." Gerard said.
"Please. You have to get some sleep, Gerard." I said.
"What for?" He said.
"Because it's for your own good." I said.
"Yeah right." He said.
"Do it for me. If not, then do it for Grandma Helena. I know that she wouldn't like to see you like this." I said.
He took a deep breath in. "Fine." He said.
Gerard got up and helped me up. I wiped away a few tears that were still falling off his pale face.
"You can sleep in my room if you want." I said and we walked hand-in-hand.
When we got to my room, Gerard went straight to my bed with Moon.
"Moon you cuddle slut." I muttered and he meowed. "Sorry."
"Don't deny it, Moon. You know it's true." Gerard smiled and gave a small laugh. Moon meowed again.
"Come on, lets tuck you both in bed." I said.
I grabbed my blanket and placed it over Gerard.
"Irmarie." Gerard said.
"Yeah?"
"When I wake up, will you still be here?" He asked.
"Of course I will. I won't leave, okay?" I said.
I sat in my chair and looked at Gerard. Some people will probably find it weird to look at someone while they're sleeping, but then again, am I normal.
I looked at my guitar and had the urge to play it. I got up and grabbed my guitar and sat back down.
I looked down the the strings. I then started playing The Crow & the Butterfly by Shinedown.
I don't know why I chose to sing that song. I mean, if you see the lyrics it's a pretty depressing song. But I knew Gerard could relate to this song in the moment.
When I finished the song, I looked at my desk and saw two notes.
I set my guitar in it's stand and picked up the notes. One was Mom's and the other was Dad's.
I love you. Be good. -Mom
I love you. -Dad
I wonder why they would put notes that say 'I love you.' I mean, they're only going to work...
"Gerard. Wake up, sleepy head." I said.
"What." Gerard said.
"Come on, it's three and you should go home to change." I said.
"Okay."
Gerard let go of Moon and sat up. I sat next to Gerard and patted his back.
"You know what's weird. My Superman and Superwoman left not one, but two notes saying they loved me." I said.
"And you think that's weird?" Gerard asked.
"Well, they only went to work." I said.
"When do they come back?" Gerard asked.
"Um. Six." I said.
"I'm home!" I heard Vinny yell.
"In my room!" I called.
I heard Vinny walk and opened the door.
"Hey Gerard. What's up?" Vinny asked.
"Um, Vinny, can I talk to you for a moment?" I asked him.
"Sure."
"Okay. I'll be right back," I said to Gerard and walked out into the hall.
"Why does Gerard look gloomy?" He asked.
"Grandma Helena died last night. Today is her funeral and I'm going with him." I said.
"Okay. Spike will be here in an hour. Star and Coco will be here in two hours." Vinny said.
I opened the door, knowing the conversation was over.
"Hey man, sorry about your lost." Vinny said.
Gerard nodded.
"Okay. I'll walk you home." I said.
I took a ride with Gerard. When we got there, there was a lot of people. Most of them were crying, either silently or not, others were speechless or in shocked, like me.
In front of the room was a casket that Grandma Helena will be forever.
We sat in front of the room. Donna began to sob ever harder as she saw her mother in the coffin. Donald try comforting his wife.
Mikey looked at Grandma Helena and began to silently cry to himself. Alicia was here with us too, and she was comforting Mikey as she let a few tears fall.
Gerard was crying to himself, but he shook as he cried. I held his hand and patted his back.
"I-I'm going to miss her," Gerard said to me.
"I know you are." I said and hugged him.
The funeral wasn't long. Grandma Helena's children and grandchildren said a few words about her.
Some where funny, some were sad. When Gerard went to go say a few words about her, he mention the day we went to go visit her.
"I had brought a friend with me and she's sitting right in the front right now. And well, Grandma told me to not be afraid of loving her. I took her advice and thanks to her, we're dating. I owe my Grandma Helena a lot. I love you, Grandma." Gerard said.
Gerard came back to his seat and hugged me.
A couple of guys closed the coffin and carried it to the hearse. We all got in the car and followed it to the cemetery.
Gerard held my hand during the whole ceremony. I hugged Gerard as they lowered Grandma Helena into the ground. Once she was buried, we went home.
I stayed with Gerard all day and night. My parents were okay with it.
"You can have the bed, I'll sleep on the floor." Gerard said.
"Hell no. You can sleep next to me, I don't mind." I said and made room for Gerard.
Gerard sighed and lied next to me. "You sure about it?" He asked.
"Sure. Now, go to sleep, you haven't had a decent sleep in about forty hours." I said.
I stayed up all night, not wanting to sleep. Sometimes I am a hypocrite. But the only reason I didn't want to sleep was because I was worried about Gerard. I sometimes could feel him awake up and began to silently cry to himself. And when that happened, I would sing to him The Crow & the Butterfly by Shinedown and he would fall back to sleep.
Some time our two am, Gerard quickly sat up.
"Nightmares?" I asked as I sat up.
"Y-yeah. How come when I wake up, you wake up? Are you a light sleeper?" Gerard asked.
"Something like that." I said.
"Well, you should go to sleep, too." Gerard said.
"I should. But I can't." I said.
"I know it's because you're worried." Gerard said.
"How did you know?" I asked.
"Lucky guess." Gerard sighed.
"Come on, lets go to sleep this time." I said.
We lied down. I rested my head on Gerard's chest and hugged his torso. And that time, we really did fell asleep.
"Good morning, Moon." I said to Moon.
For the past week, Moon has been sleeping with me. I don't mind it at all.
Moon meowed me a good morning.
