Hold on Till May
Chapter 17: Heart Block Part 2
Irmarie P.O.V.
When I woke up, I was in a while room.
You're in a hospital, Irmarie.
No shit!
I sighed, but wince at the pain. My chest hurts like crazy. It even hurts when I tried to breath.
"Oh, you're awake. Hello, Imarie. My name is Gale, I'm your doctor." The man said.
"Irmarie." I said.
"Excuse me?"
"My name is pronounce Irmarie. The first I makes the E sound. So, the I-R makes the 'er' sound." I said.
"I'm sorry for the mispronunciation, Irmarie." Doctor Gale said.
"Eh, it's fine. Most people mispronounce it." I said and wince.
"Right now you won't be able to breath right. So we have you hooked up to these oxygen tanks. So, we're kind of forcing you to breath." Doctor Gale said.
I tilted my head. "You kind of remind me of Liam Hemsworth." I said.
"I get that a lot." Doctor Gale smiled. "Anyways. Do you know why you're here?"
"Because my friend's Dad said I might have this thing called Hear Block." I said.
"He's right. What's Dad's name?" Doctor Gale asked.
"Donald Way," I said.
"Ah! He's my friend." He said. "So, getting off track here. The EKG test says you do have Heart Block. Third-degree Heart Block." Doctor Gale said.
"Third-degree isn't bad. Right?" I asked.
Doctor Gale sighed. "It's pretty bad. Third-degree Heart Block limits your heart to pump blood for your body. And I sort of knew this before we started testing you based on what your family and your friends said."
"Friends?"
"Your friends Gerard and Mikey." Doctor Gale said.
"Oh. They're here too?" I asked.
"Yeah. Anyways. The effects of Third-degree Heart Black is fatigue, dizziness, and fainting. And that all happened in less than twenty-four hours." Doctor Gale said.
"You're shitty me." I said.
"No I'm not." Doctor Gale said.
"So, I just have a couple of questions. Um, what is a Heart Block?" I asked.
"Oh, I forgot you're a teenager-"
"Hey!"
"Sorry. Anyways, a Heart Block is a type of arrhythmia. And I think Donald might of say something about the rate or rhythm of your heart." Doctor Gale said.
"Yeah. He has." I said.
"Well, some people are born with it and other people developed it as grow. You happened to be one of those people who developed it. People born with it is called a Congenital Heart Block. People that have developed it is called an Acquired Heart Block. So, in your case, it's called an Acquired Heart Block. An Acquired Heart Block is cased by damaged heart muscle or the electric system."
"And what causes the damages?" I asked.
"Diseases, surgeries, or medications." Doctor Gale said and sat on the bed. "And according to your medical record, you never had any diseases or surgeries. The question is, how did you get it. Did you take any medications?"
"I take painkillers when my head hurts," I said.
"Not those." Doctor Gale looked me.
He has my medical record he should know how I got it. Or does he want me to say it out loud? But even I don't know how I got it- OH!
Remember your bad times!
"Those weren't anxiety attack then." I said to myself.
"I'm sorry?" Doctor Gale said.
"I-I have these anxiety attacks sometimes and I bet most of them aren't even anxiety attacks." I said. "Or are they?"
"Was your heart rhythm uneven?" He asked.
"Sometimes but not most of the times." I said.
"Then you did have these Heart Blocks before. They were just not as dangerous as this one was. I bet they were slowly going to the third-degree Heart Block.
"Well then." I muttered.
"Did you take any medications you weren't suppose to take?" Doctor Gale asked.
"I did. When I was suicidal. And you know that. You have my medical record." I muttered.
"I was the same doctor who saved your life when you lost most of your blood." Doctor Gale whispered.
"I'm sorry." I said.
"I know what you were going through though. That's why I was so determined to save your life." Doctor Gale said.
"What?"
"I was suicidal like you." Doctor Gale said and he showed me his wrist. Scars. "So. What ever pills you took that night, it cause you to have a Hear Block."
"Will I live?" I asked.
"Right now, as I said, you have third-degree Heart Block, which is very bad. We put you a pacemaker in your chest. Don't worry, a female doctor put it there." Doctor Gale said.
"Okay. How long do I have to have it?" I asked.
"Until you have reached second-degree or first-degree Heart Block. After you reached on of those stages, we'll talk again." Doctor Gale said.
"Okay. How long am I going to be in the Danger Zone?" I asked.
"Until May." Doctor Gale said.
"How long have I've been asleep?" I asked narrowing my eyes.
"Two days." He said.
"Whoa." I said.
"Yeah. I told everybody what I'm telling you right now yesterday." Doctor Gale said. "Oh, and that boy, Gerard. Is that his name. The one with black hair. He's been here and hasen't left at all."
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah. I think he likes you more than friends." Doctor Gale smiled.
"Why does everybody say that?" I asked.
"Because it's true." Doctor Gale said. "Do you have feelings for him?"
"Yeah. I do." I said.
"I thought so." He smiled. "Are you ready to have visitors in here?"
"Yeah. But I have a question! Can I still do the things I use to do?" I asked.
"Well, if you're taking medication right now, then I will tell you to stop taking those that are not prescribed by a doctor." He said.
"I was talking about like exercising. Skating. Things like that." I said.
"Avoid playing American football. And maybe soccer." Doctor Gale said.
"Okay. I'm ready." I said.
Doctor Gale nodded and left the room. After a moment of silence, I heard the door open.
"Irmarie?" I heard my Dad say.
"Yeah?" I said.
In walked my Dad, Mom, Robin, Amy, Vinny, Star, Rocky, Wolfgang, Spike, Coco, and Gerard with Donna, Mikey, and Donald.
"Oh, are you okay?" Mom came to my side. She was crying.
"I'm fine. Doctor Gale told me what happened." I said.
"Yeah." She said.
"Mama, don't cry." I said.
"Oh, how can I not. My only daughter is in a hospital because she has third-degree Heart Block." Mom said.
"It was my fault." I said.
"No it wasn't." Mom said.
"Mama, no matter how many times you say that, it will always will be. It was my fault I took all those pills just to end my life back then." I said.
The room fell in silence. I can only hear them sniffing.
"Mama. It's going to be okay. They're going to take it off in May." I said.
"Okay." Mom said.
"You have on the pacemaker?" Gerard asked.
"Yeah. If you ask about my chest, it hurts like hell, but that's because they had to put the pacemaker." I said.
"Can you still skate?" Robin asked.
"Yes I can. I just have to avoid American football." I said.
"You don't even play sports." Amy smiled.
"I know. But I don't think Doctor Gale knows that." I smiled. "Hey, now I have a real reason to avoid going to P.E. class!"
"But football season is over." Gerard said.
"Yeah, I know. But there's dodge ball." I said.
Doctor Gale came back in to tell us that I'll be in the hospital for three days. Around seven P.M., my brothers, sister-in-law, future sister-in-laws, and boyfriend left back home. Thirty minutes later, Donna, Donald, and Mikey went home. They tried to get Gerard to come with them, but he wanted to stay here overnight.
I went to sleep very early because I was tired.
Are you alive???
