Hold on Till May
Chapter 18: Chin Up, Kid
Gerard P.O.V.
When I woke up the next day, Irmarie was already awake.
She was looking at the ceiling. I don't thing she realized I had woke up.
"Hey," I said quietly because Rosa and Curt were still sleeping.
"Hey, Gee." Irmarie whispered.
"What are you starring at?" I asked.
"The white ceiling." Irmarie whispered.
"What time did you wake up?" I said taking a seat on the bed.
"An hour ago, I think." Irmarie said and sat up.
"You're not usually awake at these hours," I said while looking at the clock. It read it was nine.
"The machines wouldn't let me sleep." Irmarie said.
Irmarie sighed and looked at the floor. "Hey, mind reaching the bag?" Irmarie said pointing at the bag.
I went to get it and gave it to Irmarie.
"Did you have breakfast yet?" I asked.
"Oh, that was another reason I woke up too. But, I didn't ate a lot of it. It tasted nasty. I hate hospital food." Irmarie said as she looked through the bag.
"What are you looking for?" I asked.
"Just seeing what my Mom brought me." Irmarie said.
My stomach made a loud sound. I mentally slap myself. Irmarie set the bag aside and took my hands.
"Why didn't you went home with your family?" Irmarie asked.
I shrugged.
"Gerard. You should have gone home. And, you've been here three days straight. I know that because of Doctor Gale." Irmarie said looking into my eyes.
"I just... couldn't go home because I'll get too worried." I said.
"You don't have to be worried about me. I'm fine. I have the pacemaker now. They're just keeping me here extra days so they can see the pacemaker does work. Don't worry, okay." Irmarie said.
"Okay. But I still can't stop worrying about you." I said.
"Gerard. Please go home and take a shower, get some rest, eat what ever your Mom is making. Please. Do it for me." Irmarie begged.
"Okay. I'll do it for you." I said. I kissed her forehead. "I'll see you later. Okay."
"Okay." Irmarie said.
I put on my coat and sighed. When I got to the waiting room, I called my Mom from my cell phone.
"Gerard?"
"Mom, can you pick me up. Irmarie told me to go home and clean myself up." I said.
"Well, of course! Thank God she told you or else you wouldn't come." Mom said.
"I know what you're going to say. But, I'll admit it, I love her, Ma. I really do." I said and ran my fingers threw my hair.
"We all know you do. I'll be there in thirty minutes." Mom said.
"Okay Mom. Thanks, bye." I said.
I walked outside the lobby of the hospital and started walking towards the hospital's parking garage.
Mom had called me and told me that she'll meet me by the entrance of the garage.
I sighed and kicked a pebble on the ground.
There was an old man that was on the ground by a bench. I ran to the old man.
"Are you okay sir?" I said as I held out my hands for him.
"Thank you for the help." He said and took my hands. I helped him up and then guide him to the bench. "You know, teenagers aren't all that bad as adults seem to say." He smiled.
"Some can be." I said.
I was down that road before. The one were adults hated your guts.
"Well, thank you very much. Mind asking?" The old man asked.
"No, not at all." I said.
"Who is a young lad like you visiting at the hospital?" The old man asked.
"My best friend. She fainted and we drove here as fast as we could only to find out she has third-degree Heart Block." I said.
"How old is she?" The old man asked and patted on the bench. I removed the snow and sat down.
"She's seventeen." I said.
"Too young to have Heart Block. I hope she gets better." The old man took a pause. "Did you stay here at the hospital with her?" He asked.
"Yeah. I did. Yesterday night my family went home, I refused to go." I said.
"You really love her, don't you." The old man smiled.
"Is it really that obvious. My family and her brothers tell me the same thing." I paused. "She really has changed my life."
"The girl? Yeah, they're people in this world that can change our lives." The old man said.
"Yeah. But, the thing is, I hated her before. And then her sister-in-law, which is our art teacher at our school, she paired us up as partners for a project that was suppose to last for two months, but was moved until May." I said.
"Change of heart." He said.
"Yeah. She really did open up my eyes." I said.
"You remind me so much of myself when I was younger. When I was your age, I hated this girl so much because she was different. Then one day, we were paired up for a project, just like you. She had opened up my eyes so much." He smiled.
"And you guys stayed friends?" I asked.
"More than friends. I was and am in love with her. I was worried that she didn't love me the same way I love her. Then I got the courage to ask her out, and she said yes!"
I can see the excitement in his old eyes as he tells me the story.
"From there on, we started dating. And we got married in 1955 and had six children." The old man said.
"And where is she now?" I asked.
"Back home. I'm just waiting for my daughter to come and pick me up." He said.
"Mind asking? Why are you here?" I asked.
"My youngest son had his third child." The old man said.
"Tell him I said congratulations." I said
"I will, I will!" He said.
"Sir, I need some advice." I said.
"I thought teens like you will get bored with an old man like me," he smiled, "go on."
"Well, like I said, I really do love Irmarie, my best friend. But, I don't know if it'll ruin our friendship. I mean, she used to be my seventh grade crush. But, I don't know what to do." I said.
"Chin up, kid. And you said her name is Irmarie?" The old man asked.
"Yeah." I said.
"Last name Hale?"
"Yes..."
"Blimey! She help us with our garden in the summers, and helps my wife, Ann, cook for thanksgiving and Christmas. She's a lovely girl. I can see why you love her. I'm pretty sure she loves you back. No! Wait! Is your name Gerard Way?" He asked.
"Yeah." I said.
"Oh. I tell you, Gerard. She does love you. She always has since middle school. And you know what, she forgives you. She told me this before. She was asking my advice just like you. But, she loves you." He said.
"Sir, what is your name?" I asked.
"Zach Tyler." He smiled.
"Well, Zach, I turned blind for a while. Vinny said that the reason I hated her before was because I always loved her and when my so called 'friends' came along and changed me, my love for her changed too. But, I guess I was actually hiding it." I said.
"Go on and tell her how you feel about her. When is she out of the hospital?" Zach asked.
"In two days." I said.
"I'll visit her tomorrow." He said to himself. "Tell her after she's out, okay?"
"Got it. I have to go find my Mom. Thank you Mr. Zach Tyler." I said.
"Nice to meet you Gerard Way." He said.
I said goodbye to him and went to the entrance of the garage. Mom was waiting there. I got in the car.
"Who was that old man?" Mom asked.
"Irmarie knows him. She helps them with the garden in the summers and helps his wife with the cooking during the holidays." I said.
"And you guys were talking about her." Mom said.
"He was giving me advice and told me his story on how he met his wife." I said.
"Wow. And what did he say?" Mom asked.
"He said that Irmarie loves me back and that she forgives me." I said.
"Oh, I see. He's right though." Mom said.
"About her loving me back?" I asked.
"Yep. Oh, what's his name? I've seen him somewhere." Mom said.
"Zach Tyler."
"Did he have a British accent?"
"He said blimey. And I think so." I said.
"Yeah, I've seen him before. His son's wife had a baby." She said.
"Yeah." I said.
Are you alive???
