Vampires Will Never Hurt You (Frerard)

chapter twenty one the fun has just begun

FRANKS POV

It's been about a month since we moved in. Jane introduced us to her daughter, Grace, and we've been ever so slowly gaining their trust. She's only about six, and she has about the biggest eyes I've ever seen. Her hair reminds me a bit of Rays'; it's really curly, like his but a bit more thick.

Gerard has taken a really big liking to Grace; it's almost like a he thinks of her as his daughter. He'd be so great as a father if we ever took in a kid. Jane let us watch her for a few hours while she went out with Ray and Mikey. She brought us some toy blocks that Jane got her, and we're just talking with her while she... uh... builds things? I'm not sure what she's doing.

"How did you two get together? Mama never told me that two boys could like each other!" She asks us, setting the blocks down. I glance down at Gerard and I's intertwined hands, and I giggle. "Gerard visited me before I was a vampire, and I just took a liking to him, I guess!" I explain, and Gerard blushes, kissing my hand.

"Okay, does that mean two girls can like each other?" She asks, and Gerard motions that he'll answer. He leans forward, his head brushing against the ceiling of the pillow fort that we made together. "Let me tell you this. Anyone can love anyone. No matter if they are a boy or girl, white or black, vampire or human. With love, there are no rules." He says all of this with a smile on his face, and she giggles.

He leans back, and I wrap his arms around me again. She goes back to playing with her blocks, and I turn to him. "What made you realize that you fell in love with me?" I ask, having wondered this for a couple weeks. "Well, it was when you asked me to turn you. I knew that you would go through any lengths to be with me." He tells me, and a smile lights up my face. "What about you?"

I blush, not having thought about this much. "Oh, wow, um..." I trail off, raking my mind for our best memories. "Probably when you went after those assholes who were bullying me. God, that sounds so childish." I laugh, and his hands reach up to cup my cheek. He kisses me, and after a few seconds we hear giggling coming from a certain someone...

"Grace!" I laugh, pulling away from him to look at her. She only laughs louder, struggling to cover up her smile. "I'm sorry!" She smiles through her laughter, and I reach out and lightly shove her head. "I don't want to break the good moment, but I've been wondering.

"Mama won't tell me, but I'm scared to ask you." She mumbles, her smile completely gone. She gazes down into her folded hands, and I reach out to her. "Just ask us. We'll answer as best as we can." I feel like I know what's coming. She looks hesitant, like a kid scared to raise their hand in preschool.

"What happens when you die? Like, for real?" She asks, glancing up at us through those huge grey eyes of hers. Gerard tells me that he'll handle it. He crosses his legs so that he's sitting criss-cross, and clasps his hands together.

"I used to ask this a lot, myself." He tells her, taking her hands in his own. "My mama would always tell me about a spirit named the Phoenix Witch. When you die, she comes and helps your soul find its way home. If you have a really good reason to live, she'll let you, but it comes at a price. I should show you her mailbox. You can give her items that the person who died loved, and it'll help her lead them home."

I smile, and she does too. What a beautiful way to explain death, a brutal concept, to an unsuspecting mind such as Grace's. I'm not particularly religious, but I would like to believe that.

"Could we give my daddy something? I hope he isn't lost!" She asks, and I nod my head. I eagerly look to Gerard, and ask him with my eyes if we can. He sighs, and shifts in his seat. "Alright, Alright, I'll drive us." He gives in, crawling out of the fort. I smile at Grace, and I pick her up once I get out of the tent.

We make our way to the garage, and we're just about out the door when Grace asks us something. "What can I give to the Witch? Can I write a letter?" Gerard nods, and tells her that we'll wait. She goes over to the table and pulls out a marker and some paper, writing 'dad'.

Gerard pulls out the outdated flip-phone that Ray managed to get him, and looks for updates from Ray. His face drops when his eyes settle, and his hand reaches up to cover his mouth in bewilderment. "I'm kind of glad that we talked to her about the Phoenix Witch, now." He mumbles, handing me the phone before collapsing to the floor.

"Gee!" I yell, kneeling down beside him. My eyes drift to the message on the screen.

The VCD got her, Poison. And after the last breakout, they are killing any vampires they see, on sight. I'm on my way back.

"Shit," I mumble under my breath, reaching for Gerard's wrist before remembering that he doesn't have a pulse. "Frank?" A small voice behind me asks, "What happened?" She asks me, holding Gee's hand. I jump up and rush to the sink, dousing my hands in cold water.

I kneel down to him again, slapping his face with my ice-cold hand. His eyes fly open, and dilate once they rest on me. He looks at Grace, then to me, and tilts his head. I nod, getting ready for the worst.

Should I tell her?

Yes

"Gracie?" He asks, sitting her in his lap. "You know how the Phoenix Witch helps lost souls find their way home, after they die?" She nods her head, completely unaware of what is to come. "I wish I could say this differently - but - The Phoenix Witch found your mother."

Her eyes well up with tears, Gerard's metaphor having gotten through to her. A few tears leak out of her eyes, and Gerard pulls me close to his lips. "Go get something from Jane's room. Something that she loved." I nod my head, rushing up stairs and opening the door to the room I've seen her disappear in countless times.

There are clothes littered on the floor, and a few items lying on the desk. One is a journal, which could either be a diary or a sketchbook. I take it in my arms, smelling the spine. The new book smell is long gone, and replaced by the scent of pure sweat.

I rush back downstairs and see Gerard stroking Grace's head as she writes another letter, this one labeled mom. He shushes me, and takes the book that I held out. He glances at the cover and sets it by her letter, kissing her scalp ever so gently.

"You ready to go?" He asks gently when she sets her marker down. "We're gonna help her find her way home."

A car ride later, which is the first we've had without music, he pulls to a stop in a clearing in the forest. It's the shape of a city trashcan, with pink and blue paint showing a story that I'm far to mellow to understand. He walks up to it and lightly rubs his thumb over a ridge of it.

"I used to come here all the time, to help Mikey find his way." He says as Grace puts the letters in the small slit that she can barely reach. He nods at me, and I hand the journal to her, as I don't feel the authority to deliver it myself. She looks at it for a second before dropping it into the box.

We leave without another word.

PHOENIX WITCHES POV

My, my. Many souls have come to me for guidance in the past week, and I've helped them all I could. I can only do so much without an item from the mailbox. But this soul, in particular, caught my eye.

She's encountered me once before. Her heart was staked the night she was murdered, and she came to me for guidance. Her daughter had turned to a vampire, and I knew that I needed to let her live. Her husband, however, was a selfish man, and refused to pay a revival fee. Her price was simply her car keys. That girl was one of the few cases of revival I've had, another being Mikey Way.

But Jane came to me again, knowing she couldn't avoid death once more. And, to my surprise, just fifteen minutes after we started talking, someone delivered something for her. Actually, two things. I took her to the mailbox to show her how I would help her.

The second she spotted her daughter, Grace, she dropped to her knees and started sobbing (a rare occurrence for this soul). She knows that she is a ghost, and she knows that she is apologizing to thin air. I leave her be while I gather the delivered things from the mailbox. One is a diary, the other is a letter. There's one other letter, for the girls father. I will be sure to get it to him.

I kneel down beside her, staring into her white eyes. She takes the diary in her hands, along with the letter, and sobs words of thanks to me. I nod and sympathize as best I can. After all, I have been on this job for millenniums.

After some time, she wipes away her tears and stands up. I attempt to, but my posture has gotten me to be three quarters of her height. I fold her hands around the diary and letter, looking into her eyes and nodding. I give her my last words of advice before I send any soul off.

"Let the satellites in the sky guide you. They are souls that have found their home, and they are eager to help you find yours. Trust your intuition, and remember that home isn't always a place. More often than not, it's a state of mind. Take risks, and break the rules that you have been taught since you were a new spirit. I know you can do this, and it won't take you long. I bid you farewell, Jane."
