What Grinds My Gears: Fanfiction Edition
There's Funny, Then There's Annoying
I love a comedy as much as the next person. I'm not very good at writing them, but I do love reading them. Comedy comes in all forms and each can be appreciated, but there is a line that people shouldn't cross. It's the fine line between funny and annoying.
People sometimes ask, how can something cross that line? I know the line is different for each person, so I will talk about my own. Personally, I love witty and situational humor. Puns are also my weakness. But the type of humor I loathe is stupidity for the sake of stupidity.
Take an OFC for instance. In this book, whenever I refer to an OFC, her name will be Katie. In some fanfictions, the ones labeled "comedy" has Katie as an annoying ball of energy. How may you ask? Well, there are a few characteristics.
1. She is loud all of the time. Ex. "OMG FRANK I JUST ATE SKITTLES AND NOW I'M HYPER AS SHIT!!"
2. Her jokes are often mindless and stupid. Ex. "STOP IN THE NAME OF THE EMO POLICE! YOU ARE A BITCH!"
3. She laughs at everything. Ex. "I'm sure you wouldn't like to sit on the floor all day," Frank smiled.
"HAHAHAHA THAT IS SO FUNNY YOU'RE SUCH A COMEDIAN!"
Frank is often subjected to this form of abuse as well like I talked about in Character Cliches. All in all, these are not funny. This is cringy. I would rather peel off my eyelashes then read an entire book of this. Especially when in the description, Katie is supposed to be SHY! But that is something else I will talk about later.
Once in a while, these characteristics and jokes are okay, but if it is a constant thing, it annoys the piss out of me. I'm like, Jesus Christ, learn how to be funny!
I legit made an account on here just to applaud you for this. I came across it on Tumblr and after giving it a read I had to tell you that you are damn right. F*cking bang on.
