Chapter 5

It was half 11 before Gerard and his younger brother Mikey managed to sneak out of the house. Whilst their parents were both asleep Gerard snuck into his brothers room and woke him up, together they made their ways ever so slowly down the stairs, taking the keys, their coats and phones with them. Heading out onto the street they began to talk quietly as the street lamps above their heads flickered.

"His old facebook profile said his address was 13 Cemetery Drive Gee…" Mikey whispered, walking on the inside of the path, his black boots barely making a sound. His scarf was covering the bottom half of his face and he'd pulled his hood up to try and keep warm.
"Good…" Gerard smiled gently… "It's not too far from here…"

They continued walking for another 10 minutes without seeing another person, barely any cars rolled past on the road to their side and the air seemed eerily silent. Gerard and Mikey both turned left from the street and entered an estate. In the beginning the houses were nicely kept, the little gardens were kept neat and tidy and the doors were locked with a family safe within their walls. But as they continued the orange street lamps above their heads began to flicker, the houses to their left looked as though we were about to fall to their knees whilst on the right windows were smashed in and gardens were coated in a layer of sadness.

After turning left once again, Gerard and Mikey found the 13th house. The front door was hanging from its hinges, only reached by a path made of shattered glass. Almost all of the windows were boarded up and only a glimpse of light could be seen escaping the living room. The garden was overgrown with weeds, an old car sat rusting to the end of its days as the moon became hidden by huge grey clouds.

"Well we're here…" Mikey stated, looking around constantly to check that nobody was watching them.
"Yeah…I guess so…." Gerard replied, leaning on one leg slightly, "Do you think anyone's home?"
"I don't know." Mikey's voice quivered a little as he spoke, "why?"
"So we can go and have a look inside…"
"Woah…" Mikey stumbled backwards in surprise, "I said we should come and look at the house to see where Frank lived…I never said we should actually go inside."
"Well I am." Gerard stated firmly as he begun to walk towards the old rotting wooden gate that had broken from one of its hinges, "you can either stay out here on your own or come with me."
"Um…I'll come…I suppose…"

Together they made their way up the path, crunching along the glass path quite nicely. They made it to the front door and pushed it open ever so slightly and entered Frank's old house. The wallpaper in the corridor was damp and barely any of the lights worked. They headed upstairs to find 3 empty bedrooms, the third was kept the tidiest and belonged to Frank.

2 electric guitars stood propped up in the corner with an amp by their side, an old mattress lay in the centre of the room with a pile of blankets heaped up on it. The paint from the walls was peeling but Gerard made his way over to an old desk that used to give a great view before the window was boarded up. There he opened the drawers to find a small bundle of photographs. He took the top one from the pile and using his phone as a torch looked closely. Their appeared to be Frank much younger before high school with his mum and dad he both stood smiling along with a pet dog sat at Franks feet.

"Come one Gee…" Whispered Mikey, "Let's go, I don't like it here…"
"Okay…" Gerard agreed as he slipped the photograph into his pocket and closed the draw, "Let's go."

Both immediately left the room and made their ways carefully downstairs and onto the bottom corridor. They turned into the doorway of the living room only to stand rooted to the spot in fear. On the sofa lay a woman in her mid-30's, her eyes were wide open and a smile plastered itself to her face. On the floor next to her outstretched arm lay empty bottles of wine and cigarette ash was strewn across the floor. Her hair was long, black and greasy and her skin pale was scarred. From her left arm she took out a needle and set it on the floor with all the others that had gathered there over the past few years.

"I-Is that you Frank?" She stumbled over her words, sitting herself up and trying to hold herself steady, "have y-you come home t-to mummy?"

Gerard and Mikey stared at each other with no clue of what they should do. The woman stared at them with confused eyes before pulling herself to her shaking feet. She immediately fell down amongst the alcohol, cigarettes and ruin, her eyes closed and she seemed to pass out in a sort of trance. Without a word Gerard and Mikey both turned and ran towards the front door and out into what remained of the garden, only once they had run out of the estate did they stop.

"Are you okay Mikes?" An out of breath Gerard panted.
"Yeah." His brother collapsed onto a low wall and placed his head in his hands.
"Well…that was a lucky escape."
"Yeah…and I can tell you one thing Gee." Mikey began, his voice still shaking slightly, "I don't blame Frank for running off."
