Of the Undead and Found Families

Burning Brighter

It was the cold that woke Gerard back up later that night. Despite finding himself wrapped quite tightly in thick woolen throws a draught had crept through sent a chill deep inside him. During the fight to remove the blankets from himself he noticed how high quality they were despite seeming rather old, much like everything else in the room. How long had Bert's family lived here? Taking his time, he started examining the room. The decor had a colonial feeling to it, though it looked as if all the power outlets were fairly modern.

Along the walls there were a few watercolours. Fairly standard landscapes really, but they clearly had some age to them as well. His curiosity piqued Gerard opened the heavy wooden door and headed out into the corridor. It was dim, with a heavy musty scent in the air. He laughed to himself thinking about the countless horror movies he'd seen and the striking similarities. The countless doors along the corridor looked over him as he careful opened each one. What he really wanted to do was find Bert and a toilet, not necessarily in that order. But all his search brought about were more bedrooms.

"Bert?" Gerard was getting bored, and frustrated. "How the hell am I meant to find my way around this damn place?" When Bert said he had a house, Gerard assumed it was a nice apartment or some place tucked in a suburb. Not a fucking manor of mammoth proportions. And the place was so damn quiet. He'd turned three corners, surely he'd loop back on himself at this rate?

"You motherfucker this isn't funny." Gerard was creeping closer to all our panic. He knew his situation wasn't dire but it's funny how a full bladder can mess with perception. There it was in front of him. The next corner. And he was back at the room he started from. Only this time Bert was stood in the doorway laughing.

"I'm guessing you didn't see my note?" Crumpled in his hand was a post it. Gerard could see a little smiley face doodled on the corner. Lightly he shoved Bert's shoulders.

"Asshole."

"It doesn't matter now babe. I'm here to save you from the monsters." Reaching out he wrapped his arms around Gerard any pulled him close. Berts long hair pooling over his face making a curtain that cut off the rear of the world.

"You're the monster, leaving me tucked in some dark room on my own."
"Yes but it meant I could finish the surprise."

"More of a surprise than finding out your boyfriend's house is practically a castle."

"Better. But first..." Bert held up a strip of red cloth. Gerard groaned. Bert gave him puppy dog eyes and despite grumbling the whole time Gerard caved.

Letting himself be led down a staircase he failed to find. Through a really warm room, somewhere his footsteps echoed around him, then another corridor with such soft carpet he felt himself sink with every step. There was much less dust here, the scent of cleaning chemicals was much more prominent. Another smell was growing stronger too. Paint. Bert lifted Gerard hand to a door handle, which he turned as Bert removed the blindfold. They were in a room that was easily the size of Berts apartment. Three of the wall were painted a pure matte black, with the fourth blood red. Though you could barely see the paint under the masses of posters and paintings. There was a corner bursting with art supplies and canvases. But the crown jewel was the massive fourposter bed wrought in iron, with enamel roses creeping up to the black mesh curtains. It was perfect.

"How...When did you?" Gerard couldn't tear his eyes from it.
"I've been accumulating the posters since we met. Everytime you said you liked one I would come back and get it. I got it painted as soon as you said you wanted to get away. And the bed was meant to be a birthday present but I thought we could break it in a bit early."

Gerard couldn't believe it. He knew Bert loved him, but this level of care and detail. He listened. Tears stared streaming down his face and Bert swept him up into his arms.

"Its perfect."

"Thought it might help you feel less homesick."

"Of course. How could I ever leave now?"

Gerard laughed and kissed Bert. in that moment his heart swelled and he never wantes to spend a moment apart from his love.
