"Mikey why didn't you tell me that you didn't complete the first task?" JJ stuttered.

I shuffled away from him and took another glance out the 'window'. Yes, Vince stood there. His blond hair peeking through the side of his black hat with his sunglasses shielding the evil that runs through his eyes, from the world. He is stood proud and confident, his hand gripping something in his pocket.

"You know...I wouldn't have been mad if you'd have just said...." JJ continued, ignoring the fact that I was obviously not paying any attention to him.

Vince's blue eyes peered through the enveloping darkness. I stood rigid as I saw him knock on the rotting door again before he opened it to an audience of creaking hinges.

"I mean...I thought that...." Continued JJ walking over towards me and placing his hand lightly on my shoulder, "I thought that you trusted m-"
"Shut up JJ!" I whispered angrily.
"What?"
"Vince is here you fucktard!" I replied.
"Vince is here...." He mocked me, "I'm not sure wether I trust you?"
"Shut the fuck up JJ...now isn't the time...." I whispered back, listening carefully as Vince's footsteps echoed through the hallway.
"I mean...." JJ continued, wrapping his curly hair repeatedly around his middle finger, "is Vince really here? Or are you just lying...again?"
"Where can we hide?!" I grabbed JJ by the shoulders and shook him, "where can we hide?" I repeated.
"Well...." He turned away from me, "you could hide in the trap door under the floor in the room next door if you wish."
"Okay....good..." I grabbed JJ's wrist and tried to pull him away towards the door but he stood rooted to the spot. His eyes were glossy with tears and I saw that his bottom light pink lip was shaking gently.

"JJ....come on..." I urged him on, Vince's footsteps disappeared into the distance but I knew that they would return.
"No!" He shouted back at me, "fuck you!"
"Please jus-"
"No!"

Despite his pleads I grabbed JJ and scooped him up bridal style and made my way cautiously over to the door. A small beam of fading light cast itself through the corridor. It was then that I saw the figure stood motionless at the other end of the corridor. Blue eyes piercing through the darkness. Silver blade glinting in hand. Charcoal suit fading into the background. A silver smile spread across his lips. Vince.

I froze. What should I do?

Option 1: Drop JJ and run for it?

No, despite everything he was my friend.

Option 2: Back away slowly into the room and hope that he hadn't seen me?

But he was moving silently towards us.

"Hello Mikey..." His snake like voice twisted down the corridor and infected my suffering ears, "fancy seeing you here...again...."

Quick! I turned and ran into the corridor. The hallway seemed to last forever, it's darkness eternal until I reached the next wooden door to my left. I burst through into the room and half-placed, half-threw JJ to the floor. I charged into the door as if I was a bull and frantically closed the three latches over the door. I heard casual footsteps approach from the other side of the door, so calm and constant.

I ripped the threadbare red rug from the centre of the room and cast it aside. In the darkness I managed to find the trap door, heaving the wooden door open and searching the room for JJ.
I heard fists rap against the door as sweat began to gleam on my forehead.
"Let me in Mikey...." Vince's voice slithered through the gaps in the door.

I found JJ laid out across the floor, all muscles completely still apart from the rise and fall of his chest. I picked him up once more and placed him through the trap door before jumping down into the hungry darkness myself. I pulled the door above us shut. And then, silence.

"JJ, are, are you okay?" I whispered through the darkness, I heard him shuffle towards me and jumped as his head rested onto my shoulder.
"I-I'm sorry Mikes...." He whispered, "I'm sorry...." His voice was broken and if there was any light I'd have been certain that tears were dripping gently down his face.
"It's okay...." I smiled, placing a hand gently on his back.
"I'm sorry I made you kill five people..." He stuttered again.
"But all I want to know is: why?" I almost regretted asking the question as soon as it had escaped my lips.
"Because I didn't want the same thing to happen to you and your family..."
"Why? What happened?"
"They killed everyone..." JJ sniffed, "first they killed my mother, then my brother, then they slowly took the lives of everyone else in my family and I did nothing to stop them....I didn't want the same to happen to you...."
"Oh..." I was shell shocked, saying sorry wouldn't fix anything, what could I say? "I'm sorry...I'm sorry that I lied to you..."
"I'm sorry that I made you unknowingly kill five people...." JJ replied.
"Evens?"
I heard JJ chuckle gently at my side, "yes...."

"Okay...okay...." I continued, "just one last question JJ....why did you want me to kill you?"
"Because...." He paused slightly, trying to chose the best words to explain, "because I was the last person alive in my family, I missed them and wanted to be with them. I have no friends and am always alone: I just wanted to be with people who cared about me."
"Hey JJ..." I replied, "despite you being a fuck nugget and really getting on my nerves sometimes, you are my friend. And you also risked everything to try and save my family. So thank you..." I smiled in the darkness once again.
"It's okay...I just hope that everyone is safe." I felt JJ breathe a sigh of relief.

"Oi! Mikey!" Vince's voice hissed, "did I ever tell you about your family?"
I didn't reply, instead I listened intently as his voice crawled through the gaps in the wood and into my ears.
"Did I ever tell you about when I paid your brother Gerard a visit? Or when I watched the light leave your mothers eyes? Or when I could see this knife at the other side of her heart? Or when I washed the blood from my hands and watched your brothers lifeless body go sailing down the river?"

JJ shuffled nervously next to me and gripped my hands tightly.

"That's right Mikey..." The snake continued...."You're the last Way....why don't you come out here so that you can join the rest of them?"

Notes

Hello, I'm back again with another chapter! Sorry I haven't updated in like 2 weeks; there wasn't any internet when we went away. I'm not too sure when next update will be but hopefully soon. I hope you are doing well. :)

Yeah, I think that comments (whether they are positive/have constructive criticism) are inspiring and they can really motivate you to write and keep a story going.

Thank you very much and I'm really glad that you enjoyed. :) x

You're right about losing heart when no one makes a comment. I don't think people understand how inspiring it can be to an author to receive comments. I've been getting some lovely comments from someone on The Collector and I think I've written 3 chapters in a week! :P

Anyway fab story! You're a very talented author!

@SaskiaK

Yep, I agree. I think that sometimes when you write you kinda go through good patches and bad when writing. My mind had been kinda blank the last few weeks and I've read back through a few chapters before I posted them and been like, is this even good enough? And felt like giving up, but knowing that someone actually reads and doesn't hate it almost makes you want to carry on writing, which I suppose is a good thing. :)

and hopefully this story should come to a gentle end with both of them being safe and happy, but I can't bring myself to say that they will never see each other again.

Thank you so much for everything. And I do hope that the ending will be good. :) x

Your note pretty much said it all. I don't think people realise how important comments are. They can be really inspiring. Everything from "I enjoyed that chapter" to comments on the action and emotions as if it were really happening make an author want to continue. Yes, we write for our own amusement, but if we didn't want to see what others thought or merely to entertain, we wouldn't post them. They do make such a difference.

And on that note, the actual comment! :)
A nice gentle chapter so we can get our breath back from all the heart-in-mouth action! I'm happy for JJ and Mikey, they both have family and they know Vince and his brother are both locked up for good. Nobody seems to be going after Mikey for the other murders he didn't even know about so it all looks good. Except they're going to be on opposite sides of the world. After everything they've been through, it's heartbreaking! I hope everything works out for them, it seems only fair after what they've both suffered.

Great chapter!! Will be sad to see it end, but I'm sure it'll be a great ending.
