How to Change the Past

Chapter Five

I jogged to the door, opening it quickly. “Hey, Gee..”
Gerard pulled me into a brief hug. “Hey. You okay?”
I nodded and stepped back. “Yeah, Mikey ran out to get some milk, he’ll be back soon.”
“Mikey?” Gerard echoed, staring at me.
“Yes..” I said slowly. “Mikey, my boyfriend.”
He blinked and seemed to shake something off. “Okay.”
I heard a beep from the kitchen and hurried over, taking the lasagne out of the oven.
“Did you use fake meat again?” Gerard groaned, watching me. I giggled and rolled my eyes.
“Yes, I did. Get over it.”
“No, shan't.”
I grinned. “Then I shan't give you any, and I shan't give you any beer.”
“Aw, Frankie,” he whined, flipping me off. I opened the fridge and handed him a bottle, smiling slightly. He glanced around. “This is Mikey's place, right?”
“Where else would we be?”
He ignored me and nodded. “It's nice.”
“Thanks.”
I turned and grinned. “Mikey!”
I ran around the counter and tackled him in a hug, giggling. “Hey!” He caught me carefully, but didn't look at me, instead staring at Gerard. “Hi, Frankie.”
Gerard chuckled nervously. “He's like a little kid sometimes.”
“Yeah..”
They stared at each other and I glanced between them shakily. “Dinner’s ready,” I mumbled, and Mikey jumped.
“Okay, Frankie. I'll um...go dish up.”
He wandered off and I went over to Gerard. “What the fuck was that?”
Gerard sniffed and tugged at a lock of his messy black hair. “I think he's my brother.”
I blinked. “What?”
“Remember I told you about my brother who got taken away? To a mental hospital? His name was Michael James Way, I changed my last name when I was adopted. My original name was-”
“Gerard Arthur Way,” Mikey interrupted quietly, leaning in the doorway of the kitchen.
Gerard stared at him for a while.
“I think I need more beer.”

I sat down at the uncomfortably silent table, starting to eat as quietly as I could. Mikey picked at his food, then realized I was looking and took a bigger bite. Gerard wasn't eating at all.
“I'm sorry,” he said suddenly. I gulped and looked down at my plate.
“For what?” Mikey asked, his voice flat.
“For not fighting back when they took you. I'm sorry, I should have told someone and I should have found you sooner.”
“I had nightmares about you.”
I nearly dropped my fork, shaking slightly.
“I'm sorry.”
Mikey seemed to relax, smiling. “I forgave you years ago, Gerard. You were only a kid.”
It went quiet again for a while and I finished off my plate, going back for seconds. When I got back to the dinner table, they were chatting a little stiffly.
“What do you for a living?” Mikey was asking, smiling at Gerard.
He shifted and sighed. “I'm a psychologist.”
I sat down and started to eat again.
“That's cool, Gerard. Do you enjoy it?”
Gerard nodded, but looked down. “Mikey, I can't...I can't just chat.”
Mikey tilted his head slightly, frowning. “Why not?”
“Because I didn't stop you from being taken to a mental hospital!” Gerard burst out, his eyes watery.
“It wasn't your fault,” Mikey answered evenly, but his hands were shaking. “You need to understand that.”
“How was it not? I didn't tell anyone what was happening! If I had, they'd have left you alone and we’d have grown up together. God knows what they did to you.”
Mikey shivered and I got up, my chair scraping across the floor. No one moved.
“Gerard, the past is the past, come on. I don't blame you anymore.”
I grabbed my cigarettes and keys off the side, hurrying outside and then down the steps. It was freezing and the wind was strong, so I went around to the alley along the side of the building, out of the wind. I lit up, crouching down to keep as warm as possible. It didn't take long for me to get through my first cigarette, but it never did when I was stressed. Mikey hadn't told me any of it. Hell, even Gerard hadn't told me much.
I made it through four cigarettes before I decided it was time to pack up. I glanced up at the building, seeing Mikey's window. My throat closed up a little and I started walking, away from the doors.

“Frankie?”
Someone was shaking my shoulder. “Frankie?”
I opened my eyes and squinted at Mikey. “What?”
“You left last night, you left me and Gerard.”
I rolled over away from him. “I know.”
“Why'd you go, Frankie?” He started to rub my hip lightly, but I smacked his hand away.
“No one wanted me there.”
Mikey heaved a sigh. “Frank, you know that's not true.”
“You had shit to work out and neither of you needed me.”
“That's not true!” Mikey almost shouted, and I sat up quickly, dodging around him as I got out of bed and slipped a shirt on. I stood in the middle of the room, staring at him.
“Gerard got really upset, Frank. He really needed his best friend. He got…weird. Talking about stuff I didn't understand, I didn't know what to do,” Mikey went on more calmly.
“Well he should have called me,” I muttered, heading for the bathroom. Mikey grabbed my arm and I froze.
“Frank, you shouldn't have just walked off like that!”
I shook him off violently and glared at him, breathing heavily. “Don't fucking touch me like that,” I growled. “And don't tell me what to fucking do.”
“Frank, I just thought that you should have stayed, we both needed your support.”
“It didn't fucking seem like it! I've been trying to get Gerard on medication for fucking years because he's unstable and unhappy and now you come into his life and-”
I cut myself off, trying to blink back the tears.
“And what?” Mikey snapped. “He wouldn't tell me a damn thing, Frank! I asked him about himself and he told me to mind my own fucking business! All I asked him was whether he was single!”
I choked on a sob and put a hand over my mouth, hurrying into the bathroom and slamming the door behind me.
I buried my face in my hands, crouching down on the floor. Mikey knocked on the door quietly, after a couple minutes’ pause. “Hey, Frankie. I'm so sorry, baby, I was acting like a dick. I really wanna talk about this properly, and I hate seeing you so upset. Please come out.”
“I-in a minute,” I sobbed, trembling and trying to wipe my cheeks.
“Okay. I'll make you a hot chocolate, baby.”

I wandered out of the bathroom groggily, rubbing my eyes. “Hey,” Mikey said softly, walking over and rubbing my shoulder lightly. “You okay?”
“Better now,” I mumbled, looking away.
“I care about you, y’know, Frankie. I'm really sorry about the way I acted, I was frustrated with Gerard and I took it out on you.”
I nodded and turned away, stumbling towards my bed. I crawled under the covers, curling up. Mikey sat down on the edge of the bed, rubbing my leg slowly. “Talk to me, Frankie. I'm worried about you, baby.”
I shifted uncomfortably, rubbing my eyes. “I felt like I was losing both of you.”
Mikey leaned over, stroking my hair out of my face. “Don't be silly, baby, you're not gonna lose either of us. I still want to be with you and Gerard will always be your best friend.”
I sat up, shaking a little. “So it's silly?”
“No, no,” Mikey said quickly, smiling sadly. “That's not what I meant. I'm sorry. I meant that we both care about you very much and we were caught up in the moment. We never meant to exclude you, and we certainly didn't mean to make you feel bad. I think you should call Gerard in the morning, and in the meantime, you look exhausted and I think you should eat something sugary. Do you feel lightheaded?”
I nodded slightly, leaning into his chest. “Yeah, kinda.”
“I'll go get you a slice of pie from that place across the street you like and we can maybe watch some tv or something before work.”

Wattpad scares me cause they don't really police the fics there, but then again, they stopped doing that here so yeah...

I have been on other sites too like Mibba and Ficwad and never got the same interest that I have gotten here. I like AO3 cause of tag search features and it isn't about votes there. It's about kudos and even then it is about the loyal reader.

I woudl give it a try. You only have to wait a few days for your invitation. ^-^

Aw thank you so much (: it's hard cause I know what you mean about the fanbase changing bc I used to be fairly popular on here. I've tried Wattpad as well and it really never took off. Thanks for commenting, and I'm really glad you've enjoyed it so far. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to keep writing this one, as I've started a new one I like a little more. Maybe I should have a go at AO3, but I'm a creature of habit lol so I like using what I've always used.
Anyway, thanks again and it's nice to see a familiar face again (:

Hey, just so you know, don't measure your fics worth by votes or subscribers. I have a lot of fans on AO3, but those same stories have hardly any interest here.

The fan base is different and has changed over the years. Not many are looking for plot or meaningful characters anymore in my opinion. They want face paced stories that get to the porn and what little relationship the guys have immediately.

I thought your story was really good and although I was a bit confused here and there, I got the jist of what you were trying to convey with your characters.

Keep it up! ^-^
