Stage Persona

Chapter Two: Tattoos and Starlight

It takes way too long until a cab pulls over for me. I climb in and tell him the directions for my club and the whole ride there I start getting into character.

After three wrong turns and a lousy tip from me, I walk into the club and say hi to the flare bartender, Brendon, and hurry to the back room where the other drag queens are getting ready. I sit down at my table and pull my wig cap on, pushing my hair around inside of it so Jessica's wig won't lay funny on my head and after I'm satisfied, I pull it on.
I stare into the mirror for a while and the wig helps me get more into character, I take a deep breath and I look through the clothes I brought to change into. I can't afford many of the gowns and fancy outfits the others wear, but, luckily Jessica isn't much of a ball gown type of girl.
I decide on a black miniskirt with some layering action going on, heals, and a low cut tank top with a funky design on it. I've lost quite a lot of weight since highschool so, now I can actually make this shit look good. I check myself out in the mirror for a bit to make sure I look good before sitting down in the makeup chair and start to do my makeup, starting with my eyeliner and eyeshadow, deciding to do a thick cat eye and a nice smokey eye that make my olive eyes pop. By the time I finish foundation and start contour, the other queens arrive, in various states of almost completed costumes.
"Um, Jessica?," Ryan (Well, Roxanne Rose now) calls to me.

"Yah, boo?" I reply.

"Are you using my liquid lipstick over there? I know that's Rebel from Kat Von'D's line."

"Aaaand..? So what if it is, Kiki? It doesn't automatically make it yours!" I say and start to apply it.

Roxanne scoffs, "Uh, it does when I lent it to you last week and I haven't seen it since then!"
I roll my eyes and tune out the rest of Roxy's rant as I finish off my look with false eyelashes. I stand up and check myself out. "Yeah yeah yeah, Roxy, I'll give you back your lipstick in a sec but, I gotta know..." I raise an arm over my head and roll my hips, "Do I look huggable, or fuckable?"

Roxy checks me out for a moment, "You look like if I took you home there would be a pretty good chance we'd fuck."

I roll my eyes, "Thanks Rocky Road-"

"Roxy Rose! Not-"

"You are absolutely no help-"

"Hey! Jessica, you're looking fuckable as always," a queen named Scarlet O'hana answers.

I blow her a kiss, "Thanks, Scarlet! And your wig is looking amazing today, is it-" I'm interrupted by the loudspeaker which announces, "PLEASE WELCOME TO THE STAGE...... JESSICA STARLIGHT!" And a scattering of applause after it.
I smirk and toss Roxy her lipstick, "Gotta go! The spotlight is calling!" I blow all my girls a kiss and swing my hips as Abba's Dancing Queen starts to play. I exit the dressing room and walk backstage to behind the curtain that now separates me from the stage.
3...2...1. I throw open the curtain with both hands and immediately go into my dance routine, which I've choreographed to have classic disco moves along with more modern ones... I shake my ass, body roll, and twirl my way through the song until it finishes.
I smirk at the crowd and blow them a kiss, strutting up to the mic stand, "Why hello! Aren't you all looking fabulous today!" I smirk at a short tattooed man whose eyes are huge as he stares at me, "What's wrong honey?" I flip my hair and place a hand on my hip, "Didn't know you were gonna see a drag show when you walked in?" I giggle and take the mic out of the stand, "Shame, you're so cute. But for all of who did know what they were gonna see today, I've got two more songs before the next girl comes on!"
The music starts and a soft 'The kids in the dark, the kids in the dark' rings over the speakers, which makes a real, genuine Gerard smile break through, because this one is so much more me than anything I've performed up until this point.
I take a step back from the stand and spin on my heals before crouching as I start to sing, "Here we are,
At the end of the road - a road that's quietly caving in,
Come too far to pretend that we don't - we don't miss where we started,
Looking back,
" I stand up and look to the side, raising my hand,"I see a setting sun, and watch my shadow fade into the floor,
I am left standing on the edge
Wondering how we got this far, how we got this far..."
I spin and jump up, letting myself explode at the chorus, walking to the front of the stage and dancing there. "They left us alone!
The kids in the dark,
To burn out forever,
Or light up a spark,
We come together,
State of the art,
We'll never surrender,
The kids in the dark,
So let the world sing,
'What a shame, What a shame'
," I run a hand over my forearm, which is littered with marks I made as a teenager,
"'Beautiful scars On critical veins,'
Come together,
State of the art,
We'll never surrender,
The kids in the dark,
The kids in the dark...
The kids in the dark, the kids in the dark..
" I strut to the side of the stage and do a body roll, "Here we are at the top of the hill - a hill that's quietly crumbling,
Been a while since you dressed for the kill- the kill that sent me tumbling,
Looking up
," I point to the ceiling and my head follows, "I see a falling star, and watch its fire burn into the floor,
I am left standing on the edge,
Wondering why we fall so hard, why we fall so hard..."
I repeat everything I've done with the last part of the song until the last lines,
"We'll never surrender, The kids in the dark,"
I punch my arm into the air, "The kids in the dark."
I smile at the club cheers when I finish. My chest is heaving and my hair is itching my scalp, my wig sticking to the sweat on my face, but I have no time to catch my breath or do anything as the music for my traditional set closer, 'Umbrella' by Rihanna starts. I sing and strut and shake my ass to the song as it plays, the crowd sings the last chorus with me.
As the lights dim after I'm done I drop the mic and strut off stage, swinging my hips as I go.
t the end of the night, I collect my share of tips from Brendon, rip off my false eyelashes, and change into my regular clothes, and take a makeup wipe to my face completely forgetting that I left my wig on until I'm waiting for a cab, and I realize my hair is strangely synthetic feeling. I reach up to remove it when I hear a deep slightly rough voice behind me,"Your voice is beautiful."

I turn and smirk when I see the tattooed guy from earlier, "Why thanks, cutie." I say, still in character, not bothering to get out of it until I'm in my apartment.

He smiles and walks forward to stand with me, "And uh, you were right, earlier when you said I didn't know I had walked into a drag club... I thought it was a bar I could play in."

"Ooo, what do you play?" I ask, winking.

He blushes a little, "Guitar mostly, I sing a bit too but, I'm not as good as I'd like to be yet."

I smile at him as i flag down a cab, "You'll get there, babe," I tell him as I climb in.
He smiles and opens his mouth to say something, but by that point I already have already been whisked away by the driver, and I finally get to take this wig off.

Notes
