The Death Flower

Chapter 3

Gerard pov.

I grab tightly around my backpack that I had quickly thrown over my shoulder as I ran out of the classroom. The wind is blowing in my face, and I am still sprinting, as I reach the end of the school parking lot.

Technically, I'm off school grounds now, but if they find out I left school early, even only five minutes before the last bell rings, I'll surely be given one of their worst punishments. And I'm not exactly in the mood for that. Who am I kidding? No one is ever in the mood for that.

I watch as my shoes leave the ground and return back to it while I run as fast as I can to my house as possible. Its almost traumatizing how your feet do the work for you, and its almost effortless because you don't have to put any thought into running anymore. It's like a second nature. I have this feeling of freedom wash over me, of no stress, and complete bliss. However, it al fades away in an instant when the thought that my mother could potentially be home right now takes over me.

It seems to drop a big weight on me, and my running slows a little.

Maybe she won't though? There's no reason for her to be home this early, its got to only be my mind getting to me like it always does.

I push the thought out of my mind and speed up a little as I continue making my way to my house.

......

When I finally reach my small one story house, almost the same as every house on the block, I frantically look for the key we hide in the potted plant on the front porch, hoping a car won't pass as I'm still out on the outside.

I reach around in the soil, and when I can feel a small, cold, metal, item at the tip of my finger, I know it's got to be the key. I mean, what else would it be?

I take it out of the plant dropping a few pieces of soil on the way out and shove the key into the keyhole. I turn it as quickly as possible so I can make sure I can get inside soon.

A moment of relief hits me when I can feel the cool air of inside my house welcoming me, but I freeze when I hear footsteps nearing the door.

"What are you doing home so early? The bell doesn't ring for another five minutes." A stern voice questions, and I know for a fact that it's my mother.

I freeze in my tracks and my face is burning up and I know for a fact that I am as red as a tomato.

"Um..well..I'm sick, so the nurse allowed me to go home." I lie, and try to continue making my way to my room.

"Gerard, why are you lying to me?" She asks, holding out her arm to block me from walking to my room. "You don't have to lie." She says, and thats when I lose it. I can feel tears streaming down my face and I just completely break down.

"But I do have to lie."

"Why would you have to lie to your own mother?" She says, placing her hands on her hips and tilting her head slightly.

I look up at her, with tears still brimming my eyes, and a few already coming down my cheeks.

"Because if I don't I'm going to die." I manage to say through my seemingly endless stream of tears.

"What do you mean you're going to die?" She asks, but then stops.

"Wait..how bad is it? Is it because of the government? Gerard, please tell me you didn't tell anyone anything." She begins to freak out, and that only worsens my sadness.

Even she knows I'll be killed if I say what she thinks I'm going to say.

"And I'm pretty sure I'm going to say what she thinks I'm going to say.

"Mom," I start, looking her straight in the eyes. "I hate the government. I hate it. I don't believe in it, and I don't know what to do, because we can't leave. Theres no way of exiting the country, they've blocked everything. And if I so much as voice my opinion to anyone they'll execute me."

When I realize what I just said, I cower back in fear.

"Please don't tell them I said anything." I whisper. "I don't want to die."

"Gerard..I won't tell anyone." She sighs. "Is that why you left school early? You know they can punish you very harshly for that." She says and I shake my head.

"It's...part of the reason I guess." A confused look takes over her face.

"What do you mean?"

"Well...we read this story, and I felt like it had a special connection to what was going on right now, and I don't know what it did to me." I admit. "It's kind of stupid."

"W-what did you read?"

"It was um..it was called The Death Flower."

When I say that, something in my moms eyes changes. She quickly gets up, closing the blinds behind me and making sure all of the doors are locked, before running down into the basement.

What?

A few minutes later I hear her footsteps coming back up the stairs and she holds a book in her hands.

She blows the dust off of the book and walks towards me.

"This book?" She asks, holding it out.

I grab it from her delicate hands and look at the intricate words on the title page. Yeah, its the same thing. Of course this is the actual book, and we just read it from some stupid school book of stories.

"Yeah..that's it." I stutter, looking up at her.

"What did you think while reading it." She questions softly.

"I don't actually know." I admit. "It's like I felt like I was Samuel, and like the story had a special connection to our lives right now."

She looks at me, a hopeful look on her face.

"Can I tell you something?"

"Sure, mom."

"I think the same way you do." She says. "I don't agree with the government either."

"You do?" I ask, and she nods.

"Yeah, and I can I tell you something else?"

"Always, mom."

"The Death Flower isn't a myth, its real."

She gives me a worried look, but I just sit back, my jaw opened in shock.

The Death Flower is...real?

What does that mean?
