Screen Fades to Black

A few bloodied noses, busted lips and five days of suspension for everyone involved. No one really came away the clear winner. There was casualties on both sides. The war between the jocks and the underdogs hasn’t really been resolved. Yet, for those twenty minutes we all sat in the principal’s office, all us of worked together and managed to avoid expulsion and not being able to graduate or move up a grade. That time put a glimmer of hope in my heart that maybe, one day, both groups can get along.
Now, with ice packs duct taped to various bruises and tissues pressed to lips and shoved up noses, we all sit in Gerard’s basement where this all started. Although we’re hurt, and got a good talking to about how revenge is never the answer by Gee and Mikey’s mom, we are all happy; laughing as the sounds of screaming children emits from the television.
Popcorn is strewn all over Gerard’s room from out recent fight and soda cans litter the floor, but we’re all clean. No alcohol, no drugs, no cutting. It’s just us, Frank, Gerard, Ray, Mikey and I, five friends who will be with each other through everything.
Frank runs his fingers through my hair, pulling the tissue away from his lip, “I love you, Amber.”
Turning so I can kiss him, I smile, “I love you too, Frankie.”
“I know who’s getting some tonight,” Mikey giggles, pushing Gerard’s hand away as he tries to force-feed his little brother some popcorn.
I just laugh, shaking my head, and lean back on Frank’s chest. I love these guys. They are my family and I’d do anything for them.
“I love you guys,” I say as some random girl on TV gets her head cut off by a chainsaw.
“D’aw, we love you too, Amber,” Gerard says coming onto the bed so we are all there together.
And, as the screen fades to black, one would see all my friends and I, the underdogs. We may be battered and bloodied from their fight with the brainless monsters, but we are laughing, embracing, and simply enjoying the fact that we kicked ass today.
