Give Me Hope In The Darkness

The Perfect First Day

The weekend passed in a blur and I was extremely disappointed by the fact my brother hadn't come down to visit me before I started school. I knew he had his own issues and problems to deal with before he began his next term, but I really was quite looking forward to seeing him. I hadn't spoken to him since my Grandfather's funeral and I missed him after all.

I woke early before I had to catch the bus from the stop that was only a few blocks over from my house and I showered slowly, eager to rub any stray, dried bits of blood that was plastered onto my arms and legs. The warm water settled my butterflies but it could only last so long. As I stared at my clothes that were laid out across my bed, I could feel them fluttering, making me feel slightly nauseous.

I was just in a towel and my patience was starting to wear thin as my indecisive brain over complicated every single detail that was put before me. I groaned, hanging my head just as I heard a load bang come from outside. I looked over at the window to see Gerard leave his house and as he walked, he briefly glanced at my window. I didn't think he saw me however the little smirk that rested on his lips told me other wise. I roughly shut my curtains, agitated and nervous about everything that was running through my mind. Surely it couldn't be this difficult. In the end I decided on a black pair of jeans and my Bowie shirt, alongside my doc martins and leather jacket. This surely shouldn't make me stand out like a sore thumb...too much however I was certain people will surely be aware that I'm new.

After that, I left my hair be to dry on it's own, hopefully not to get too wavy and applied some concealer to hide the dark rings under my eyes. After that I winged my liquid eyeliner and added mascara and I thought it best I leave it as it was.I felt so bland as I stared at myself in the mirror. Brown eyes and dark hair looked absolutely beautiful on my mother however I wish I at least had my fathers bright blue eyes, something to make me not look so boring and lifeless against my pale skin. I had my cheekbones a little lower but still prominent so that when I smiled, my face looked strange and contorted. My straight nose dull and my relatively thick lips unproportioned.

I grimaced before leaving the bathroom, anxious to get the first day over already. I made my way downstairs, thankful that my father was already up as he smoked away at his cigarette while standing by the back door.

“Morning Dee.” He smiled.

“Morning.”

“You nervous?”

“I'm shitting myself.” I admitted sheepishly.

“Watch your language.” He said, pretending to be stern. “But, I can understand that.” He chuckled. He then walked over to the counter and picked up something that made me extremely happy.

As my father handed me the dark flask filled with coffee, there was a knock at our door, causing us to look warily at each other once more. He announced he had to finish getting ready so I offered to answer it, really against my will. I walked towards it, placing my bag there, for when I was ready to leave and opened it to find a bright smiling Mikey.

“Hey Mikey.” I smiled back as he waved.

“Hey, nice shirt.”

“Thanks, yours too.” I said pointing down to his Ramones shirt.

“Thanks.” He smiled proudly. “I was wondering if you wanted to catch the bus with me and Frank this morning.” I was suddenly thankful that my mum had brought the Way's over last week. I was scared about easily getting lost on my first day on the way to school and relieved that Mikey would offer.

“Yeah, that sounds great.” I sighed, filled with relief.

“Okay cool, you ready to go now or do you need a minute?”

“No, I'm good to go, just let me say goodbye to my dad.” I said as I welcomed him in, leaving the door slightly open. I ran upstairs hearing the shower run briskly and I lightly knocked on the door.

“Hey dad, I'm off now. I'm gonna catch the bus with Mikey from next door.”

“Okay little one.” I heard, his voice muffled due to the shower. “Good luck, you'll be fine.”

“Thanks Dad, see you later, love you!”

“Love you too.” I ran back down stairs, picking up my flask that was sitting on the counter and made my way back over to Mikey.

“Ready?”

“Nope, but lets go.” I chuckled, shutting the door behind us. The sun was shining bright on the pavement and I was shocked by the random weather changes that Jersey had seemed to have over the last few days. On my first night here it was chilly and raining forcefully (in the summer!) and now it was hot, like potential sweating hot.

“Can't the weather decide what it's going to stay like?” I said pointing to the sky to which Mikey giggled.

“It never does but trust me. You'll know when it's Winter. It's fucking freezing here when it is.”

“I actually can't wait.”

“Why? It would be freezing!” He asked dramatically.

“I'd much rather freeze to death than melt Mikey.” I laughed.“Jeez, you really are like my brother. He hates the summer because he says it's more difficult for him to wear black.”

“Now that I can understand. Everything I own is practically black.” I waved my hand, displaying the clothes I was wearing.

“I don't think I've seen my brother wear anything that wasn't black for like...five years.” He said as we continued to walk further and further away from out street.

“So...how was your weekend away?”I asked.

“Eh, it was okay. It was good to see my dad and all but we mostly stayed inside the hotel with bad cable TV. There was some random French channel that had freaky kids cartoons on it. It was pretty entertaining but not something I would want to watch by choice.”

We stayed at a comfortable pace and not long after, I could see the bus stop not far from us with already a few people dressed completely opposite to how Mikey and I were. Most of the girls were in shorts and bright coloured shirts whereas the guys were in American apparel outfits and some with baseball caps on. However there was one guy standing towards the back with a cigarette hanging from his lips, black hair with red highlights and dressed in jeans and a black Iron Maiden shirt.

“Be wary about what some of these people might say. They don't normally catch the bus here.” Mikey warned however with an encouraging smile.

“Oh, Okay.” I squeaked, my butterflies starting to kick up again.

“Just ignore them. Oh and by the way, Frank's a little full on when he meets new people.”

“What do you-?” But before I could ask, the girls coaxed in make-up were already staring at me with disgusted looks and rolling their eyes, whispering to each other. Mikey continued to walk, pushing his glasses up higher and ignored their stares. I on the other hand suddenly felt too self-conscious and was desperate to run back home.

“Hey fag.” One of them shot Mikey's way but he kept his head held high.

“Loser!” Another said as they threw an empty wrapper at him, however it missed and nearly hit me in the face.

“Got a new freak?” They continued as we pushed ourselves through the little crowd of seniors. It was already like my old school. Mikey never told me he got picked on, just that he didn't have a lot of friends but I suppose if I were him, I wouldn't tell the new girl you were trying to be friends with that you were 'uncool'. What annoyed me though already was that Mikey was such a sweet person and people were doing this to him. It sickened me. I hated bullies.

“Hey Mikes.” Frank, I supposed, beamed as he exhaled a large cloud of smoke, then bringing Mikey into a one armed hug.

“Hey Frank.”

“Watch it loser!” A blonde girl complained as a little of the smoke went into her direction.

“Oh keep your wig on princess.” He retorted as he flicked the cigarette of into the near by bushes. “You have a good weekend?”

“It was okay. I already told Dakota about this freaky French channel.” He said pointing to me “Oh, yeah! Frank, this is my new neighbour Dakota. Dakota, this is Frank.” Mikey introduced.

“It's nice to mee-” I began but before I could finish, Frank had enveloped me in a tight hug, squeezing me until I could hardly breathe.“Woah.”

“It's cool to meet you Dakota.” He smirked, finally letting me go and gently patting me on the head. I looked over to Mikey who was giving me a 'I told you so' look to which I laughed at.

“You too Frank.” I said patting him on the head as well. He was only a little shorter than I was but he had so much confidence. I admired him already.

“How long you been here?” He asked, smiling as he flicked his hair back up.

“Only since Wednesday.”

“And you're already starting the hell hole?” He feigned shock. I shrugged.

“Frank don't discourage her already.” Mikey said pushing his glasses back up his nose. “She hasn't even been there yet.” Frank lifted his hands in innocence.

“She already got a taste of what it's like at the bus stop. Just trying to prepare her, I mean...I'm sure school sucks everywhere.” He said turning to me for clarification.

“I'd agree with you there.”

“See?” Frank beamed.

The typical yellow school bus eventually arrived and the group of kids clambered onto it, mostly running for the back row of seats, the apparent typical 'cool people' seats. As we sat down, Mikey offering me the window seat, and Frank in the little row in front of us, I could instantly feel the stares of everyone around me. Mikey and Frank seemed oblivious to it.

I unscrewed the lid of the flask carefully, ready to poor myself a little bit of coffee but out of the corner of my eye, I saw Frank turn around inconspicuously, placing his arms on the back of the leather seat.

“Whatcha' got there?” He asked innocently.

“Coffee...” I said sipping at it timidly. “You want some?”

“Pleease!” he said, dragging out the word and reaching for the small cup. Mikey rolled his eyes before placing his ear buds in and slid down in the seat next to me. I felt so comfortable around these guys.

“So have you met the whole Way family household yet?”

“No, just Mikey and his mum.” I answered taking back the cup before refilling it.

“Ah, so you haven't met the infamous Gerard Way?” He wiggled his eyebrows.

“What are you doing?” I laughed at his expression. “And why does everyone make a big deal out of him?” I chuckled.

“Who's made a big deal out him?” he asked, resting his chin on top of his arms.

“No one really, I mean, my mum just mentioned him and how everyone knows him or 'of' him...I've only just seen him leave his house.”

“Well...” He said clearing his throat. “You see little Dakota, Mikey's brother sometimes scares the shit outta me.” he giggled.

“How?”

“Well, maybe I was being dramatic but he's pretty intimidating and he's done some stuff. He's cool and all but you definitely know when he doesn't like you. It took me like two years of being friends with Mikey before he actually talked to me properly without giving me sass and shit. He's-”

“Can we please stop talking about my brother.” Mikey said exasperated as he pulled out one of his headphones. “He's not that bad.”

“But that's because you live with him” Frank stressed but Mikey shot him a glare. “Okay, okay.” He said as he accepted the rest of the coffee.

We drove the rest of the way with Frank and me playing the twenty questions game. It was funny as we found out each other's favourite colours, seasons, movies and music. Like with Mikey, Frank and I had a lot in common however, he'd never listened to Fleetwood Mac.

“Are you crazy!?” I joked as he widened his eyes.

“Some people have come to that conclusion yes but I try to steer clear from any music my parents listen to.”

“No, seriously Frank, Lindsey Buckingham is one of the greatest guitar players to have ever walked this earth. Stevie Nicks...her voice it just amazing and she writes some of the most heart-breaking and hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard! John Mcive, the bassist is awesome as well. I highly recommend them.”

“Woah, okay, I'll give them a listen. Our friend Vee's pretty into them as well.” He smiled encouragingly. “But just to annoy her, me and Mikey put them down a little.” He giggled.

Frank certainly seemed like the mischievous one of the group.

The bus pulled up to a large, grey, intimidating building that I just felt lost looking at. Everyone spilled out of the bus and into the parking lot, joining various other groups of people. I followed Frank and Mikey off the bus, thanking the driver before feeling the warm, morning air hit my face. We walked in a line, Frank and Mikey on either side of me as they spoke to each other animatedly but I wasn't paying attention to what it was about it. I was too freaked out to say anything to them.

“Frank! Mikey!” We all heard, turning around quickly. I saw a blonde girl, dressed in dark blue jeans, converses and a plain white shirt run up to us, her face breaking out into a grin. Frank and Mikey stepped forward with arms open wide as they all hugged, this girls face wedged between their shoulders. She was about the same height as Mikey.“What have you guys been up to? I haven't heard from you in like three weeks?!” She said, smacking them both on the shoulders.

“You were the one on holiday Vee! And ouch.” Frank pouted, rubbing his shoulder.

“That doesn't mean you stop calling and shit. I could have been dead!”

“I was hoping the summer would calm down your dramatic ways. You're almost as worse as Frank.” Mikey muttered.

“Hey!” Frank argued.

“What was that Michael?” Vee asked. Mikey scrunched up his face.

“I hate it when you call me Michael.”

“Well it is your actual name...and you shouldn't comment about some things.” Vee answered, shrugging her shoulders. She certainly seemed like she could handle these boys if they were ever out of line. Her bright blue eyes eventually found there way to me and she smiled.“Who's this?”

“Oh, this is Dakota, Mikey's new neighbour.” Frank said, giving me a little shove forward.

“Hey.” I waved awkwardly.

“Nice to meet you.” She said holding out her finely painted black nails to which I accepted. “New to the school or area?”

“Both.”“Oh shit...well, I'd like to apologise in advance to the shithole we all live in. It's not so bad at the mall though...”

“Yeah, that's because you drag us along shopping.” Mikey murmured.

"You ready Dakota?" Frank said wrapping an arm around my shoulder as we all made our way towards the building, the other groups of people following us. As we began climbing the steps, a group of kids laughed and pointed our way, a burly, blonde haired Jock making his way towards us. Just then Frank removed his arm hesitantly.

"Just stay quiet..." Frank whispered.

“Good morning losers. Ready for another year of hell...for you that is.”

“Fuck off Jason.” Vee said, attempting to push past him but he held onto her shoulders.

“Woah there.” He said pushing her back. “You know you should watch your tongue. Nobody's gonna wanna be with a girl whose got a filthy mouth.”

“And no girl wants to be with a jerk who thinks he walks on water and hids behind daddy's money. Just grow a pair already.” Frank said, this time attempting to get past him.

“Awh, how sweet, this little fag is trying to defend his girlfriend.” He laughed, this time shoving Frank back.

“How can I be a fag and have a girlfriend at the same time? You should work on your insults dude...”

“Hey.” Jason said, pulling Frank up by the collar and bringing him close to his face. “You better watch yourself short ass.”

“And you better re-think this move other wise people might think you want to kiss me.” Frank said which made me giggle involuntarily causing Jason's head to snap up in my direction. I shut my mouth instantly, feeling his fierce gaze on me.

“Looky here, fresh meat.” Jason smirked once he'd punched Frank in the stomach. "I see you decided to replace Monica."

“Leave her alone Jason.” Mikey said, trying to stand in front of me but Jason easily pushed him out of the way.

“What's your name missy?”

“Why do you need to know?” I scoffed, repulsed at how close he stood to me. I checked to see if Frank was okay, but Vee was already helping him up. "Look, just leave us alone, okay?"

“Another smart mouth? Well, it seems you need to know the rules before you officially start here, what do you think guys?” He asked, turning his head briefly. I looked around him to see some of the girls smirking and other jocks crack their knuckles. Oh shit.

“Beat the shit out of her Jason!” A girl cheered.“Not yet, but there is something we can do.”

“Don't you fucking dare-” Vee said storming up to him and slapping him on the back.

“You better control your bitch.” Jason warned as he grabbed my wrist, pulling me inside the building ahead of the others.

“Hey! Get your hands off me.”

"Oh just shut the- Oh, good morning Mrs Wilbury!" He smiled at the elderly woman behind the desk.

"Good morning Jason." She replied. Jesus christ, was she really oblivious to the fact he was literally dragging a girl through a crowded corridor? He pulled me right past the front office and down the long corridors as I clawed at his wrist, most likely leaving a few scratches.

"Make room people!" He shouted, pushing past a few other people. Some laughed and pointed while others looked at my sympathetically. He stopped and pushed me up against a set of lockers with one arm as he opened a locker with his free hand.

“Oh for fucks sake...how original.” I muttered as he shoved me into the locker, my body cramped and instantly uncomfortable. He shut the door with force and banged on it twice.

“You better learn the rules around here emo.” He laughed as I heard his footsteps slowly descend away from me and down the hall.

What a perfect first day.
