Gerard’s P.O.V

“So you like the new kid?” Mikey asks as we walk home

“Yeah” I simply respond

“So he’s deaf?”

“Yeah”

“Gerard talk to me” Mikey whines

“What? his name is Frank and he’s deaf, really cute” I say

“So he signs then?”

“Yeah”

“Ughh your so complex when you like someone” Mikey groans

“What am I sopposed to say; I just met him, we barely even know eachother yet..I have nothing to go on about” it was true, he is really nice but we can just stay friends for now until we know each other more; we arrive home and I go inside to be greeted by mom and dad; dad always leaves before we wake up but gets here before we come back from school

“Hey guys, how was school?” he asks

“GERARD HAS A CRUSH ON THE NEW KID” Mikey yells before running into the kitchen; not before me giving him a death glare. I look back to my parents whose eyebrows were raised curiously.

“So...who’s the new kid?” mom asks

“His name is Frank” I say sitting on the couch

“Gerard you can tell us” I sigh and sit up

“Well he’s deaf” I start and their faces grows even more curious

“Oh, and he goes to your school”

“Yeah, I forgot to ask him why but he has an interprator that follows him, his name is Matt, pretty cool...so yeah” I end awkwardly, talking to your parents about your crush was never the best thing in the world .

“That’s nice, do you have homework?” I nod “Okay go do that and dinner will be in a bit” I nod and get up to head to my room; I know they wanted to ask more questions but thankfully they didn’t.

I put on my pajamas and crawl into bed but I cannot seem to go to sleep; my mind wanders to school to school and then of course to Frank. I do not know a thing about signing and I think it would help him if I did; I sit up and pull out my laptop. I search ‘ASL for beginners’ and a bunch of links pop up; I click the first one and a video pops up. Quickly I put my headphones in and play the video; a women starts speaking and signing, while listening she says she’s going to teach the alphabet first. I guess that would be the easiest thing to learn

“A” she signs and I copy her hand placement; not to hard.
“B” I copy again and again until she reaches Z where I pause the video; I wonder if I can do it again without her help. I start again but in the middle I look at the video to figure out a couple letters; a couple minutes later I silently cheer to myself as I can do the whole alphabet without looking. I hope I don’t forget it tomorrow though; I continue the video and listen to the very helpful women

“What is your name/My name is” she says what we will learn next

Okay something confuses me; the signs for ASL are backwards...I shouldn’t say that but if I was signing ‘What is your name?’ I would sign ‘name, your, what’I...I will have to ask Frank about that; I decide
“What” I am supposed to hold my relaxed "5" hands in front of me and shake my hands side to side; they say facial aexpressions means everything so give a confused face while signing any question

“Your” Basically a flat hand and face your palm towards the person

“Name” You use your pointer and middle finger, put them together; and tap your right two fingers twice on your left two fingers.

“Then for my you just point to yourself then name is the same, last you spell out your name G-E-R-A-R-D

I practice these for awhile before I before I began to get tired; closing my laptop and putting it aside I lay back down and sigh...I’m very happy with myself that I learned something.

*Next day*

I arrive to school and head towards the cafeteria and I see Frank and Matt sitting together signing; I smile and hurry across from them

“Hey Gerard” He smiles giving a wave

“Hey Frank, Hey Matt” I say sitting down
“Sleep good?” I decided to question

“Yeah thanks, you?”

“Fine...I’ve got something to show you” He cocks his eyebrow

“My name is G-E-R-A-R-D; what is your name?” I sign remembering them from last night; he looks at my hands while I sign and the biggest grin i’ve seen from a person appears on his face. When I finish he looks to my face

“Your learning to sign?”

“Yeah, I thought it would be easier for you if you had a friend who new something about signing” I smile

“You really don’t have to” he responds still with a toothy grin

“It’s nothing, it’s fun”

“Well thank you” he says in a softer voice; I nod and give a toothy smile. Matt signs something to him which I can’t understand and Frank gives a glare and signs something back...Huh, I really wonder what he said?
