I'd Rather Not Miss Out On Us

Chapter 1

*Jess's POV*
“Medium vanilla latte with a double shot, please,” I spoke happily. The Barista smiled, “coming right up, Jess.” This was my favorite coffee shop in LA. I only came to this saint of a city once a month for a few days, but when I did, I was in here 5 times a day. Normally my best friend, Dalton, was with me. He would come up with me from Dallas to see his best friend, Brendon. I came up for recording sessions. My band lived in LA. I’ve told the guys a million and one times to find another singer who doesn’t live forever away, but they refuse. It’s stressful, but I’m flattered. I couldn’t imagine my life without the idiotic group of boys I proudly called my band. We were the “The Red Rejects” weird name, I know, but it has a good story behind it. Pretty much, at our first show in a little shitty bar outside of Hollywood, we were playing a few songs, nameless, when suddenly an icy red drink was splashed on me. I was wearing a white shirt, and so was our guitarist, Joe, who got the beverage dumped on him. We both stunk of tequila instantly. We knew we weren’t that great, but damn; we didn’t suck that bad. I was ready to swing punches, when I decided to laugh it off and put my face up to the microphone and laugh out “what better way to call us rejects, thanks all of you, have a good night.” And walked off stage, with my band slowly following me. I put my head against the wall and mumbled “we’re just rejects in this business, aren’t we?” to myself, not expecting anyone to hear or answer back, but our drummer, Reed, laughed “yeah, red rejects. Ha.” We made eye contact and the rest of the band started jumping up and down, and that’s how we got our band name. “Ma’am… Jess, Earth to Jess.” I popped my head up from the stain on the counter I was focused on, “Sorry, thanks.” I grabbed my coffee, and started to walk out “see you later, probably. Yeah, you will.” I laughed and made my way on the concrete side walk. Tonight we had our EP release party, and somehow our manager scored us the House of Blues for the party. How cool is that? I was still in awe, and hugged Rob every time I saw him. I began to walk down the street to the apartment building Brendon lived in, and called Dalton. “Hey, I’m outside, let’s go check out the venue.” “I’m a l-l-little bbbusy, J-jesss.” Dalton panted into the phone. “Are you alright?” I heard a loud groan and my eyes widened. “Jess, - aaah, fuck- I’m busy” On that, I hung up. I knew something was going down between Dalton and B. I smirked to myself, happy for my best friend. And then frowned. I’ve been single for over a year. I kept walking, looking at sings and street post, admiring the people and the weather. All it does is rain in Texas. I got to a big beautiful building and a smile stretched across my face as I headed to the doors. I got out the key my manager gave me to check the place out and get into the vibes of it, it really helped me come show time.
