Night Six

3: 28
Frerard

-

Gerard awoke on the kitchen floor in his apartment, the previous night a haze and his whole body ached. He managed to get himself up and the whole apartment was trashed, Gerard didn’t want to admit that his breakdown left everything in ruins and the worst part was, he had foolishly destroyed the last piece of Frank he had left.

Gerard wasn’t allowed to work anymore, this disturbed him the most as he had nothing left to distract him in the day aside from the memories of what could have been his life… He watched the clock tick by until the night came, calling him softly in the silence of his apartment. Gerard didn’t bother with sleep anymore, he couldn’t will himself the torture of possibly seeing Frank in his dreams.

As the night went on, the more vivid the memories crawled of the one piece of paper that destroyed it all, that burned everything he loved around him and made Frank untouchable.
It was that piece of paper that took Frank away from him. It was the contents written on that paper that left Gerard alone to wallow in his own misery of how truly fragile an illusion can be. Gerard sat on his couch with the paper that hurt him deeply and caused his misery.

The day the letter came in was one that Gerard never forgot as he lost the love of his life. It was a Sunday evening when Frank visited Gerard and both of them shared small talk, Gerard offered Frank a drink of iced coffee and Frank agreed.

Gerard left to prep the drinks and the moment he did, he came back to the sights of Frank hold the letter.

“What’s this?” Frank asks, reading the contents before his jaw dropped. “Gerard… Why didn’t you tell me?”

Gerard never told a single soul about the contents of that letter, and he would never let anyone know. Not even Frank was supposed to know, yet the man had read the dreadful letter.
“It’s not a big deal.”

“Gerard!” Frank snaps, making the man flinch, “This is a huge deal… Why didn’t you tell me?”
Gerard was unwilling to say it aloud, he shook his head. It hurt him to witness the frustration that swept across Frank’s face.

“Why won’t you admit it? Why?”

Gerard remorsefully shook his head, “No. Frank, please…”

Frank threw the paper in Gerard’s face and walked out the door without a second glance or word said. Gerard dropped the glasses, the shattered beneath him and his knees buckled.

He collapsed to the ground with the smell of coffee reach his senses, broken glass cutting into his flesh. The wounds didn’t bother him nearly as much as knowing Frank rejected him. Frank was the first person to know the truth—the painful truth of Gerard’s fate…

The clock ticked and his eyes were met with the time of 3: 28 AM, he closed his eyes hoping he’d disappear in the silence.

Gerard stared deeply into the paper as no tears or sadness was left in him, the numbers, the results—cancer.

Gerard didn’t want to admit that his memories weren’t the only thing he was battling in the night.
