City of the Damned

Chapter Eight: Long Hard Road Out Of Hell

The sound of a thousand agonizing screams filled the air as Morgana and her clan erupted into ashes. The ashes fell from the air unto the ground making it looked like it had just snowed a sorrowful snow.
I quickly rush over to Gerard’s still unconscious body, I bend down as I lift his head off the ground, his pallid face covered with the ashes of the dead. “Gerard, please wake up.” I whisper as suddenly his hazel eyes flutter open meeting my pleading gaze while a smile slowly makes its way onto his face. “Hey love, you did it.” Gerard coughs wracking his whole body.
“No we did it.” I correct him as a smile graces his face once more. “C’mon, let’s get out of this ghastly sewer.” I begin as Gerard looks down at his still bleeding wound, his smile fading.
“Helena look at me,” I quickly oblige and look into his ravishing hazel eyes once again, “I’m not going to make it, you need to leave.” He states, sadness in his eyes.
“I’m not leaving you.” I say as Gerard opens his mouth to object but before he could unconsciousness took hold of him once more. “Don’t worry, you’re not going to die anytime soon, I’ll make sure of that.” I whisper even though he can’t hear me, I gently lay his head down on the ashy ground as I tear a piece of my jacket off, putting the cloth to Gerard’s wound trying desperately to slow the bleeding. I contemplate how I’m going to get out of this hellish sewer before finally deciding. I slowly pick Gerard’s limp body off of the ground while thanking the gods that he’s lighter than I anticipated. I make my way up the stairs, rushing through the doors, and I slosh through the murky water while quickly realizing I don’t have a light guiding the way this time. “Curses!” I mutter out loud as I desperately try to retrace my steps while hoping Gerard can hold on a bit longer. I sigh with relief as I see the early morning light and the ladder that leads to it. “That blasted ladder.” I mumble as I realize the challenge that I face. I step closer to the ladder contemplating my actions carefully. I throw Gerard’s limp body over my shoulder as I huff and begin to begrudgingly make my way up the dreaded ladder. When I finally reach the surface, I lay Gerard on the brick ground, before grabbing the lid which guards the sewer and sealing up the entrance tight making sure no one or nothing can make their way into it once more. I pick up Gerard once again, his face becoming more pale by the minute, and begin to rush back to my flat.
