City of the Damned

Chapter Three: Extraordinary Girl

“Helena, are you sure you want to do this? There’s a great chance that we will both perish at the hands of Morgana.” His usual ‘charming’ aura has all but evanesced as the sudden realization that today could very well be his last day on earth hit him.

“Gerard, look at me,” his hesitant hazel eyes slowly meet my gaze, “We will not die, we will live, and we will slay Morgana. I mean it’s only a thousand vampires, how bad could it be?” Gerard smiles at my comment.
“Okay, love, I trust you with my life considering you’ve slayed more vampires than I could ever dream of.” Gerard professes as I smile for the first time tonight or frankly for the first time in a thousand years. We begin to trudge forward, I hold the dimming candle up high as we listen to the sound of the melancholy hymn. “Oh, and by the way if we happen to make it out of this ghastly sewer, you owe me a kiss.” He muses as I look back at him, a smile located promptly on his pallid face.
“In your dreams, pretty boy.” I mock as we continue on our way.
“Certainly, and you think I’m pretty?” Gerard beamed as I scoffed and snickered. I turn back around and come face to face with a deathly pale man with a psychotic, evil grin on his face. The vampires red eyes shone in the light of my candle, before I could react he blew out the candle. Leaving us stranded in the dark. My wooden stake ready to strike as I wait for my eyes to adjust to the blackness. I hear the hideous hissing of the blood-sucking fiends once again, as they draw closer. It is then that I also realize the piano has concluded its melody. The hairs on the back of my neck rise, as I wait for the first vampire to attack. My heart racing with both anticipation and dread. A black mass lunged at me, their long, black fingernails trying to rip out my neck. I dodged the vampire’s weak attempt, while sticking my stake directly into its vile heart. It let out a blood curdling scream as it exploded into ashes. Vampires continued to attack me from all angles, I evade each and every one of their pathetic attempts at trying to kill me. By this point, I am covered with the gray ashes of the slain demons, sweat continues to pour down my face, as I slaughter all of the ashen monsters blocking my path. I look over to Gerard making sure he’s alive and well. His face is flushed as beads of sweat fell from his forehead, he propels his stake into the last vampire standing, its ashes covering Gerard’s clothing. We look at each other, nodding as I pull out yet another candle and try and find the glass container to put it in. I find it in the sewer water, the glass broken.
“Curses,” I mutter to myself as the captivating tune begins once again. I light the candle, holding it in my hand. Not caring about the burning sensation in my hand as hot wax falls. I hold out the candle, the faint light reveals a rather large, black door etched with the patterns of lacy vines flowing through it. “The music must be coming from inside there.” I motion to Gerard, pointing at the mysterious door.
“That means Morgana herself is also behind those doors,” he says looking nervously upon the entrance leading into the unknown, “Are you ready?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I sigh trying to find confidence but finding none, as Gerard and I prepare our weapons once more. I place my hand on the black door contemplating my actions before finally deciding. I forcefully kick open the door, much to my surprise, it swings open, revealing a sight not commonly found in London’s sewers. We step out onto the balcony overlooking a huge open area where what remains of the clan has gathered. Black coffins line up on the brick walls, candles on long silver stands stretch as far as the eye can see. A massive throne sits in the center of it all; a black shining piano resides next to it. The smell of death floats in the air.
