City of the Damned

Chapter Two

“And who might you be?” I inquire while raising an eyebrow and looking straight into his eyes. Not even bothering to put down my knife

“Oh, just someone who could use your assistance, Helena,” he states as I am taken a back at the sound of my name escaping his thin lips. I glare, a piercing glare directed squarely at the mysterious stranger. I don’t take kindly to strangers let alone pompous ones. Using all of my strength, I push him against the brick wall raising my knife to his pale throat. He seems surprised by this but just continues to smile at me, a smirk seemingly forever plastered on his stupid yet strangely attractive face.
“I ask again, who are you and how do you know my name?” I demand through grit teeth as I am getting tired of his antics considering I have 1,001 vampires to slay before dawn. My knife continues to graze his throat while I still have him pushed against the wall.
“The name’s Gerard and it’s a pleasure to meet you, love.” Gerard said with yet another smirk but with an added wink this time. I roll my eyes and sigh while my knife remains at his throat as I wait for him to continue. “Every vampire slayer in England knows your name, sweetheart, you’re the elusive, loner but you’ve killed enough vampires to make even Dracula fear you. I’ve tracked you for quite sometime now, I figured you would come and attempt to slay the clan eventually considering how brash and frankly ignorant you are. No one can kill Morgana and her demons alone, not even the great Helena.” He voiced as I finally released him as mist was now flooding the alley making it look even more haunting than before.
I spat at his leather shoes, the glob hitting its mark as Gerard looked down while letting a slight laugh escape his lips. He whipped out a handkerchief from the inside of his coat and wiped the spit off his shoes, making them spotless once again . “Feisty, aren’t we?” Gerard questioned as I rolled my eyes once more, I really didn’t care for him and his stupid attractive face.
“I work alone, and I especially don’t work with arrogant strangers.” I stated rather simply while crossing my arms across my chest as an act of defiance towards him. “I will now return to the task at hand, I mustn’t wait any longer, farewell Gerard I hope to never see you again,” I made my way to the sewer entrance finally getting on with my priorities. But before I could Gerard grabbed my arm.
“Love, you aren’t doing anything without me, and if you try to object you’ll soon regret it.” I ripped my arm away from his tight grasp and sigh, thinking it over.“Fine, but please try not to die in the process; I really don’t want to have to deal with that.” I huff as Gerard smiles at me once again. He quickly steps in front of me opening the lid guarding the sewer, as he motions for me to enter a grin plastered on his face once more. I grumble and make my way down the ladder leading to the dark depths of hell, with Gerard quickly trailing behind me. I climb off of the ladder landing in the murky, putrid water which rises past my ankles much to my dismay. The smell is horrid as Gerard quickly realizes this as he coughs “What is that awful smell?” “Fecal matter and urine, perhaps a few rotting corpses thrown in there as well.” I state as if it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. The sewer is dark and has many corridors leading to different areas. I decide it would be best to pull out my lantern to light the way and I do just that while also pulling out my wooden stake figuring I would be needing to use it quite soon. I light the candle and place it inside the glass container. Dim light floods the tunnel, rats scurry out of our view as we hear the dreadful hissing of a thousand damned souls filling the dank air. I look over to Gerard, for the first time I see something besides arrogance in his striking hazel eyes, I see fear. He grasps his wooden stake in his hand preparing for battle, preparing for death. We exchange a knowing glance, as we know what horrors we are about to face. I hold the lantern steady hoping to deter the ever nearing demons. Suddenly, however I hear an enchanting sound, the sound of a sweet, sorrowful ballad being played on a piano. The music echoes throughout the tunnels almost as if it is some sort of mating call, beckoning its followers near. As the music continues, the hissing ceases. I breathe a slight sigh of relief knowing that my death wish hasn’t come true just yet. “They’re following the sound, the queen is calling them.” Gerard states, fear still in his eyes as he turns to face me.
“We must follow and with haste, considering we still have an entire clan and their queen to slay before sunrise. “ I voice as I begin to make my way toward the sound of the ever alluring music. But before I could Gerard takes hold of my arm once again.
“Helena, are you sure you want to do this? There’s a great chance that we will both perish at the hands of Morgana.” His usual ‘charming’ aura has all but evanesced as the sudden realization that today could very well be his last day on earth hit him.
