Gerard's POV

Frank really did seem to be the perfect choice, at least on paper. 21 years old, wants to make a difference, believes in the Alliance between our people. The file doesn't go into detail but it said he lost his entire family in some sort of accident. So he's lonely. Well, we certainly had that in common. Maybe I could make him happy. Pulling up the video interview for the first time took my breath away. He was gorgeous. Hazel eyes. A smile that lit up his entire face. His shyness caused him to look down at his lap and then up through his eyelashes frequently, something I found adorable. Sai Dertan had said he was a bit rebellious? I couldn't stop smiling myself. Yes, I think I could fall in love with this human.

Frank's POV

After my little “excursion” and the necessary clean up, I decided to study up on my potential mate in my bunk. But I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We all knew we were being paired up with members of the Royal Family, but personally I figured we were getting a Duke or Duchess. Someone with a meaningless title. That way the humans could advice them on various things without getting in the way too much. I did NOT dream that I would be expected to marry the heir to the throne. What does that even make me? Non gender Queen? Do I wave from a float during parades? Funny how none of this was explained before we were jettisoned into deep space for decades. You will be paired with the hottest freaking teenager you've ever seen. Intimidatingly hot. I've got three years on this kid, so why am I almost afraid to meet him? Kid is probably stuck up and insufferable. I mean, growing up that hot AND knowing you'll be King? Sure the profile makes him seem pretty great – into art, writing, reading, music. But that doesn't mean its reality.

Computer: You have a secure message from Sai Gerard on Corlia. Do you wish to except it?

“Oh, uh yes of course.”

Computer: One moment....

Soon my portable screen is filled with the image of my future intended. Still just as captivating as before. Hopefully I wasn't making a stupid face, because I felt like I was staring with my mouth open. Ze started hesitantly, looking scared almost.

“Mr Iero. H-Hello.”

“Please, just Frank. I apologize but I don't the custom to address you properly. Sai Gerard is it?

“When its just us, Gee. In official settings, unfortunately, it has to be Sai Gerard as I am now acting ruler of Corlia. It will be the same for you if you accept my offer of marriage. You were awakened a year early, in 2089. Our fastest ships will reach you in about 1 week and you can be here in another 2. They're on their way already. I had wanted us to have time to get to know each other before making the decision to marry. Of course, you still have the option of saying no as per the agreement. But time is valuable, Frank. When a Corlian takes the throne, they share it equally with their mate. You were hand picked by my parents as the candidate they wished to rule with me. After reviewing the information available to me, I agree. You are the only one remotely qualified. Please, would do me the honor of accepting my proposal of marriage?” The young teen had seemed rather poised and confident until this last plea, which came out as a whisper. “I can't do this alone.”

Flashes of terror would dance across zis eyes, along with the obvious bravery ze had. Most of all I could see the same pain, loss and loneliness I saw in the mirror every morning as I brushed my teeth. Before I knew what I was getting myself into, I had already started nodding slightly. C'mon. Ray and Bob seem like stand up guys but I don't see them in this role even more then I don't see myself. Let's just hope these parents knew what they were doing. Reflexively, I placed a hand on the edge of my screen and smiled.

“Of course, Gee. So what's the situation?” I thought I was bracing for the worst. But I was so, so wrong.

Gerard's POV

“Of course, Gee. So what's the situation?” He smiled at me so sweetly. He accepted! It was a relief. I honestly don't know what I would have done if he had said no.

Frank looked so much better over the network than he had in his interview. My stomach flipped in a strange mixture of excitement and nerves, although the stress of the situation probably had a lot to do with it. I tried so hard to concentrate at the business at hand, but the knowledge that he had accepted the proposal did distract me. But then grief would rush back into my memory and ruin it.

“First, the Killians have declared war on both our people in response to the Alliance. War ships are headed to Earth now, with an estimated arrival of one month. Questra has been re-routed to the nearest space station moon, with efforts to rescue the intended human mates. We can only hope that with them off planet, Earth will be spared. Secondly, some sort of virus, infected both my parents. Sai Dertan passed away a few hours ago. Sai Genias three weeks before. I'm very suspicious of these deaths of course and my cousin, whom I trust completely, is handling the autopsies personally.”

I paused for a moment to catch my breath and my composure, but also to let Frank absorb all of this. His face showed shock, but not in a way that indicated that he couldn't handle it. He took one breath and then spoke.

“Your parent just died a few hours ago? I'm so sorry. Are you ok?” I just nodded. “I wish I was there already. I'd give you a hug. Looks like you need one.”

I sighed, looking at my lap. “Me too.”

“So what can I do to help?” He said, obviously changing the subject.

“Right before my Pa died, he told me to be sure the Human race didn't die out. Obviously, our first plan is to save Earth and everyone on it. But the Killians are an advantaged race and much closer that we are right now. Another issue, if we are successful in rescuing the human mates assigned to Corlians originally assigned to reside on Earth? They are all female. So, just between you and me, if it came down to your entire world being destroyed, start thinking of ways to continue your species.”

Hey there! I'm back to my regularly scheduled updates, pretty much. I do have a pretty clear plan for this story, at least for awhile, but I think i'm going to open things up for participation after awhile. So def shout out opinions!
