The Only Hope For Me Is You
Meeting New People
I walked outside after a few minutes of sitting in the diner. Kobra had already started the fire and was sitting on a wooden crate. He was smoking another cigarette, as I sat down on a metal box next to him I said, “You know, you really shouldn't smoke. It's bad for your health.”
Kobra smirked, the cigarette dangling between his lips, “Trust me Jet, cigarettes are the last things I'm worried about being a detriment to my health. Living in the desert is far more dangerous than smoking.” His skin glowed in the orange light of the fire. His hair blew slightly in the wind, I'd be lying to myself if I said he wasn't attractive.
I ran my fingers through my hair, “What do you remember about Battery City Kobra?”
Kobra eyed me as he exhaled another lungful smoke, “We lived in a small town just outside of Battery City. I remember looking at the tall glass buildings shimmering on the horizon. Poison and I would play in our front yard, we didn't have to worry about anything. Our mother would bake cookies on Friday, oh man, they were the best.” Kobra flicked his cigarette to the ground, “We were innocent back then, we didn't know what BL/ind was planning. We had no clue of the hardships that were to come.”
“Why did you run?” I asked.
Kobra sighed, “We had no where to go. BL/ind bombed our entire town. Both our parents were killed, our house collapsed on top of them. Poison and I barely made it out. We just ran. We ran for days. We found Ghoul and the rest is history.” Kobra answered, he never looked at me, he kept his eyes on the flames.
“How about yourself? What is the real reason you ran?” He asked finally looking up at me.
“I told you, I ran for freedom.” I stated, Kobra shook his head
“That's why everyone ran Jet. Why did you run?”
“My m-mom. She refused to take the new pills, t-they got rid of any wanted emotions. She told me that a life was not worth living if you could not feel. My father he took them, not wanting to get on BL/ind’s bad side. My mother and I watched as the man we loved turned into simply a shell. There was nothing inside of him, no individuality. Finally they figured out that my mother and I weren't taking the pills. She died because she wanted me to live my life. She died getting me out.” I explained, I felt my throat tighten…I will not cry. I needed to be strong.
Kobra looked at me sympathetically, “I'm sorry Jet, really I am.”
A few more days passed, nothing exciting happened. My wound was healing nicely. I had been working on getting the motorcycle that Kobra shot up and running. I was confident that it'd be ready to ride within the next few days.
We were all sitting in the diner, Poison whispered something into Ghoul's ear. Ghoul giggled and kissed Poison gently on the lips. Kobra smiled at the sight, but I felt a small swell of jealousy, I wanted someone like that. I wanted someone to love me like Poison and Ghoul loved each other.
I heard a van pull up outside the diner, my hand instantly went to my gun but Ghoul smiled at me, “Don't worry Jet, it's only Dr. D, Cola, and Show Pony.” People really did come up with some weird names. The door opened and three men walked into the diner, one was an older man in an electric wheelchair, the other two were about the same age as us, one with blonde hair and was wearing a dark green canvas jacket, the other had dark brown hair and he was wearing roller-skates.
“Hey guys!” Poison smiled, standing up to greet his friends.
“Hello motorbabies,” The older man grinned, he looked up at me and cocked his head. “And who's this?”
"This is Jet Star, he ran away from Battery City. He joined our group about a week ago.” Poison answered, the older man looked at me apprehensively, “It's okay Dr. D, he can be trusted.” So the older man was Dr. D. The younger man in roller skates smiled.
“Hey Jet Star, I'm Show Pony.” He pushed his brown hair out of his face and held his hand out to me. I shook it and smiled at him, the other man I assumed must be Cola.
"The name is Agent Cherri Cola." He smiled, I grinned back at him.
“You picked on heck of a group to join young man.” Dr. D stated, “You are now part of the most wanted group of Killjoys.”
Poison scratched the back of his neck, “Dr. D we don't want to scare him off okay?”
Pony started to rummage through a bag hung on the back of Dr. D’s wheelchair. He pulled out a large bottle of vodka. “A new member is always a reason to celebrate.”
"Hell yeah!” Ghoul laughed and grabbed the bottle from Pony’s hands. He took out seven glasses and began to pour the clear liquid into the glasses. When he handed me a glass I shook my head, “Hey man, it's alright there is no law out in the desert. Therefore no illegal drinking age.” He smiled and offered the glass again, which I took with some apprehension.
Once everyone had their glasses Pony held his in the air, everyone followed suit. “To Jet Star! Welcome to the family brother!” Pony stated, I brought the glass to my lips and took a small drink. The liquid burned going down, and it took everything in me not to cough.
A few hours passed and everyone was getting drunk, but I still hadn't taken another drink. Ghoul and Poison were making out in one of the booths, Kobra was standing alone by the counter, I was about to walk up to him when I saw Cola cross the room and walked up to Kobra who smiled up at him. Just now I realized how big Cola was, he stood about four inches taller than Kobra and his whole body looked like pure muscle. Cola wrapped his arm around Kobra’s waist and brought him close to his chest. I watched in bewilderment as Cola kissed Kobra. I swore I saw Kobra try to push him away but Cola only tightened his grip on Kobra’s waist.
Kobra looked over at me and I quickly averted my gaze, but I still caught the blush that rose in his cheeks. I took another drink and this time it didn't burn nearly as bad.
