Keep Running

You Eyes Vacant and Stained

Frank pulled away in disgust, and turned to look back at Gerard. He had a smug look on his face. Frank forced himself not to look down at his crotch. He went deathly red and realized what he just thought. Fuck. He rubbed his eyes and looked back to Gerard. He was laughing, but it was that quiet laughing that was never caught if you didn't have superhuman hearing. He held his hands up.

"Hey, it was you, not me."

Frank tutted. He pulled himself over to the corner of the van, and slumped himself down. He didn't feel like jokes, even dirty ones right now.

"I'm sorry." Gerard said. He showed no sign of remorse, but if Frank could get it, he would take it as an apology.

"Hmm..." Frank mumbled in conformation. Gerard shook his head. He sat down beside Frank and looked expressionless at the wall. Frank peeked a glance. Gerard was sat in the light, and the rays of sun were dancing on his face. The shadows were intensified and the prominent parts of his face stood out even more. He had high cheek bones, but he had a pudgy face. His eyes were glistening, dancing in the sun, so the green took over the brown color.

"Where are we going?" Frank asked after studying Gerard. He turned around, and looked Frank right in the eye, and the smaller male saw something that he might not have noticed. Gerard looked genuinely scared, not as terrified as Frank felt inside, but there was definitely an element of fear. Frank drew in a breath and waited for the answer. Gerard looked away, and seemed to be thinking.

"Chicago," He said finally. Hmm, Chicago. Frank wondered what could possibly be in Chicago for Gerard.

"Why?"

"Need to take care of something there." Gerard turned around and retrieved something out of a satchel that was mounted on the wall. Frank was alarmed.

"Wha-what?" Frank stuttered. Gerard looked at him and smiled.

"No, not like that. I'm not a monster, you know." He stated, repeating the fact he had said earlier. Frank looked at him, and in all seriousness, wondered in what way he could not be a monster. He had taken out what looked like a sketch pad from his bag, and a pencil. He flipped over the first few pages, and Frank got glimpses of different doodles and sketches.

"Then... Why did you kill that man?"

"As I said, it's complicated." Frank felt that anger boiling up inside him again. He restrained himself though, because he knew how it ended.

"Bullshit."

"Frank, it's not big or clever to swear." Gerard patronized, waggling a finger in Frank's face.

"Well, you can't just sit there and say a murder was 'Complicated'," Frank imitated speech marks with his fingers.

"Who said it was murder? Who said it wasn't revenge?" Frank had never thought of it that way. Revenge. He liked the way the word danced on the end of Gerard tongue when he said it. It was mystifying, but at the same time, incredibly scary. Frank held his breath and waited for the next part of the conversation, but it never came.

They sat there in an awkward silence for a little while. Gerard was drawing, and Frank was trying to make himself content with looking around the van. Gerard looked up at Frank, and Frank reciprocated the look.

At that moment, Frank realized what Gerard was talking about. His eyes gave it away. He was not all monster. He looked at Frank with care, genuine care. He was more confusing than a Rubik's cube, and Frank was sure he had more layers than and onion.

"I'm sorry," Gerard repeated for the second time in their conversation.

"I understand." Frank said back. He really didn't know why Gerard had murdered that man, but he understood why he was here. Gerard was trying to save his butt. Frank didn't blame him for trying. He would have done the same thing. Perhaps without committing more crimes than he was trying to solve, but then again what lengths would someone go to be free?

"One day, I shall explain it all to you. I promise."
