Summary
Deeply depressed, and maybe a little bit crazy, Gerard Way lives in Belleville's one and only mental institute, and he has for two years. Two years with the same therapist who can never get his name right, two years with the same crazy muttering people really wears a guy thin, especially when they're convinced that they aren't supposed to be there at all, and they are in fact fine. Yes, life for Gerard has been in a constant loop until a stranger is checked into the ward, and he makes friends.
Paranoid, crazy, and maybe a little bit awkward, Frank Iero has just moved to Bellevile, New Jersey, and his mom has checked him into the towns only mental institute. Upon being there for an hour, Frank has already decided he hates the place, because the only person he can talk to is his best friend Matty. Then friendship hits him right in the face when he sees the boy with the fire red hair.
Both of their worlds flip upside down when they meet, but happy endings are never easy, especially when other people get in the way. Will their friendship survive the perils of the mental institute, or will everything all fall apart at the seams?
Characters
Dannek (Danny) Murtawk
Danny is a tall, skinny boy with red hair, much like Gerard. He has dark blue eyes, but he always wears sunglasses. He was checked into the institute due to his poor temper, and his random, and violent outburst. He has a strange obsession with his sunglasses and never takes them off, even inside. The only time he takes them off is when he's sleeping. He's been in the institute for three months, and is seventeen years old.
Frank (Frankie, Itsy-Bitsy Iero) Iero
Frank is a short boy with long, greasy brown-black hair that always hangs in his face. He has light hazel eyes that are usually covered by his hair. He was checked into the institute because of his wide array of phobias, his schizophrenia, his violent outburst (he nearly killed a man), and his very unstable emotional state. Frank has an imaginary friend, who he is convinced is real, named Matty, and other then Matty, Frank talks to no one. Most people think that he's a mute. Frank has been in the institute for about an hour, and he is fifteen.
Gerard (Gee) Way
Gerard is a tall, lanky boy with shaggy fire-truck red hair. Gerard has dark hazel eyes, and a cute little pixie nose. He was checked into the institute because of his severe depression, along with his very bad social anxiety, and his bipolar disorder. He is probably the most stable and sane person there, and could seem completely normal upon meeting someone for the first time. He's been at the institute for two years, and he is eighteen.
Matthew (Matty) Delaware
Matty is a figment of Frank's imagination. He is a short, skinny boy with medium length blonde hair, big glasses, and green eyes. Matty isn't actually in the institute, because he isn't real. He is a very lively boy who loves to talk, and is Frank's only friend. He has an immediate dislike for Danny, and warns Frank against befriending him. Matty has been at the institute for as long as Frank, and he is fifteen.
