Conspiracy

III

It was a very high risk thing to bring Michael back to his previous bedroom; she was no one of importance in the facility, and to be going against a superior order was going to either cost her job or give her a big penalty on the paycheck she would be getting at the end of the month. Yet she couldn’t leave him inside that room.

“Aren’t you going to get in trouble for bringing me here?”

Of course that would be the first question he could ask, as soon as they entered his previous room. Nothing had been moved since he had been sent to the locked room, and the bed was freshly made.Amery helped him get under the covers; winter was coming quickly, and the cold breeze could be felt right on the bones inside the large and old building.

“Yes, Michael, I may be getting in trouble for bringing you here. It’s very kind of you to be speaking out the obvious.” She wasn’t exactly annoyed at him; her eyes were scanning through the halls and room, trying to see if no one caught her in the act.

The girl was under the stupid idea that if they saw he was in the bedroom a few hours later, they wouldn’t mind or think of it as a strange thing. She fixed the covers and got his pills.

“This time, you can’t not take them.” She warned him, bringing the small plastic cup to him, before he could make a snarky remark on her last reply. Amery was almost certain that he would.

Sighing, Mikey nodded. He wasn’t insane, and those pills made him lose grip on reality; the darkness would come, and he would sleep for too many hours, giving the nightmares a chance to return to his mind and cloud his better judgment. That was why he got violent sometimes; it was hard to separate reality from fiction.

He swallowed the pills, refusing to do so with water, before resting his head back on the pillow. Any person could notice that the conditions in that room were vastly better than the one he had been locked inside, which caused her heart to ache.

When she first got into this sort of job, she knew what she would be facing; the conditions weren’t always great, and the most violent patients needed to be in a secluded area, of course, to avoid hurting innocent people. However, this wasn’t fair, and it peaked Amery’s interest. Mikey wasn’t the sort to be violent, and he hadn’t done anything major to deserve being locked inside that cell.

“Don’t think so hard, Ames, you’ll get your little brain fried.” Mikey was getting much at ease with the nurse, which could either be a good or a bad thing. Her superior had mentioned he didn’t get along with previous nurses, and if she could help him get better, she’d feel as if this was truly what she was meant to be doing.
It wasn’t any appealing to take care of patients who were much too dull; the tough ones made her heart pound harder, caused her to feel more excited to be able to help them, to bring them back into society.

Amery wasn’t capable of thinking that anyone would want them to live an awful life filled with demons inside their heads, stuck inside a facility like this.

“Aren’t you so fine and dandy now? I think next time I’ll just leave you inside that other room for a few more minutes.” The girl teased him, looking at the clock. “I need to go check on everyone else. You need to promise me you won’t do anything wrong while I’m gone, Michael. I’m risking a lot for you.”

“I wouldn’t need to behave if you simply believed I’m not insane and helped me out of here.” He pointed out smartly, the pills already causing his mind to start fogging up. Mikey was blinking a lot more, trying to keep his eyes peeled up and keep a conversation; it had been so long since he had been able to do that with anyone at all. “But I guess that’s not happening yet.”

Amery sighed; would anyone believe an asylum patient that claimed to be mentally capable? If he was inside the building, it was because he had done something that was severe enough for him to get locked up inside. Yet he looked at her with so much hope, that it caused her breath to fail for a few seconds.

“I’d be insane to believe you, wouldn’t I?” The girl tried to keep her tone light; she didn’t know if he would freak out, although she doubted he would. “Now, keep quiet and sleep. I’ll be back later.” It wasn’t supposed to feel or sound like a promise, but it ended up being that way. “You can only get out if you don’t act out, Michael.”

Her mind shouted at her that it was impossible to reason with a mental patient, but that didn’t mean her heart wouldn’t win; she would try to, at least with him. He wasn’t like Monica, from room 300, that every time she saw her called Amery ‘Mommy’, running to her and holding her leg for about fifteen minutes, until a guard came to help get her back inside the bed and take her pills.

“I promise to try and behave.” It wasn’t Mikey’s intention to make her life harder; he simply missed being free, happy and with his family. He missed Gerard, and even Lynz, although they hadn’t gotten along that well while he was out.

Amery offered him a small smile, nodding. She took the small cup with her, turning around and walking to the door. She had a long shift ahead, but she would make sure to visit Mikey before heading back home; something told her he would be much at ease if she did so.

“Amery?”

His voice startled her, simply because it broke the heavy silence that reigned inside the facility. The girl turned around, facing him with a small smile and a wrinkle of worry on her forehead.
“Yes?” She replied softly.

“I like it that you call me Michael.” He smiled weakly, before closing his eyes, not able to fight off the sleep that was caused by the pills.

Sighing heavily, she opened the door.

“Sleep well, Michael."
