Chapter 6: Circles

“What the fuck, Brendon! What the actual fuck!”
“She has a right to know! Don’t start yelling again. We need to figure this out together.”
“Oh, so now you’re Mister Teamwork are you? Two hours ago you wanted to fucking throw her out on the street!”
I looked towards Brendon, not believing what Gerard was saying but the look on Brendon’s face said it all.
“Christine you can’t believe him.” Brendon stuttered, “I’m not cruel like that, I swear! I was just drunk!” his voice cracked and he looked like he was about to cry but I wasn’t about to forgive him.
“Get out.” I tried to speak quietly because I knew I could start crying at any minute.
“Christine please, let me explain.”
“I said get out!” I screamed at him not even caring that he knew I was crying now, he deserved to feel bad. I buried my face in the pillow and screamed, angry at Brendon, at myself, at the world for putting me in this situation.
Brendon left the room with his eyes on the floor and left the door open behind him. Gerard followed but didn’t leave the room; he closed the door and locked it then sat down next to me once again.
“Come here.” He said softly, opening his arms. I curled up next to him as best I could without hurting my shoulder further. I found the cold leather jacket and his bleach-damaged hair in my face comforting. I continued to softly cry for a minute and then sat up straight looking into Gerard’s eyes. He looked like he wanted to say something but couldn’t bring himself to do it.
“Gerard, what is it. Please, I understand why you didn’t tell me, I mean, I’m glad I know, but I do understand, I’m not upset with you. But please, don’t hide anything else from me, there is so little I know about myself, I’m scared, please.
“I just wanted to make sure you know that you didn’t deserve this. And I’m sorry it happened to you. You’re so delicate but you have managed to stay remotely sane through this whole ordeal. You’re like, like, um, a geode! Yeah, you’re like a geode, but like a reverse geode. You’re beautiful on the outside, well and the inside also but what I’m trying to get across is that you are very strong and beautiful and I don’t even know you and you don’t even know yourself but I have become very fond of you. I mean, well we all have, even Brendon now, I guess, I mean I, we, just want to help you.”
After a quite awkward minute of silence Gerard rubbed the back of his neck and sighed through his teeth.
“I realize how insanely creepy that sounded.”
We both started giggling, and soon enough we were both laughing so hard tears fell from our eyes. Banging on the door and shouting from the other side interrupted our laughter.
“Gerard! Christine! Are you okay, the door is stuck? Are you guys hurt?”
Our laughter stopped but we both giggled when Gerard unlocked and opened the door Patrick was banging on, sending him falling flat on his face. He jumped immediately and began looking around the room with wild eyes. When he saw that both Gerard and I were smiling he leaned down and rested his hands on his knees.
“Holy smokes! You guys scared me! I thought someone was dying in here.”
Patrick giggled at his own pessimism and soon enough the three of us were laughing messes once again.
“Hey, guys.” I spoke through my laughter, “I know we are all having a grand time here but I am still bleeding from my shoulder.”
Gerard’s demeanor immediately became serious as he ran to the other room to grab the first aid kit. He returned to the room with five huge white boxes.
“Holy shit, did you get enough stuff, Gerard?”
Gerard blushed for a moment before replying, “They all had different stuff in them so I got them all, I wasn’t sure what we would need.”
Our eyes locked for a moment and we smiled at each other, I felt a strange kind of connection with Gerard, like I had known him all my life. For all I knew I could have known him all my life but he said he didn’t recognize me. I almost wish he were lying to me, at least then someone here would know who I am.
“So uh, Chris. Can you lie down again? Sorry, I just need to fix your cut.”
I obliged but couldn’t help but keep my head turned to him. He was blushing; I couldn’t help but let a laugh slip out. His face had gone the color of his hair! I could feel myself beginning to blush as well when he began taking my shirt off so I buried my face in the soft pillow and let Gerard work. I just had to keep thinking to myself, “It’s just so he can get to the cut, it’s just so he can get to the cut.”
