The Blackout

Fun Ghoul’s POV
I ducked as another laser beam shot past me – Just inches away from my sweating face. It had been at least a couple of long hours since we had got here, and the heat seemed to increase as noon went by.

I glanced around at the other three Killjoys that fought with me as I aimed at a Drac that was coming for me; Kobra Kid was back-to-back with Jet Star shooting as many Dracs as they could, whereas Party Poison was running throughout the small war zone shooting, punching and kicking more Dracs to the ground as fast as his energy would allow him to.

Ray gun shots sounded repeatedly throughout the zone along with the occasional thump of lifeless bodies hitting the floor, and as the windless sky flew by the motionless desert, vultures flew around to try and pick up any food – mostly leftovers from the humans at our feet – that they could possibly get to without getting shot themselves. I snapped back into reality, however, when Party’s voice screamed out to me.

“GHOUL!” He exclaimed, stopping in the middle of a small clearing. I flicked my eyes toward his panicked expression and his outstretched arm trying to reach a Drac that was aiming his gun at me, but before I could respond or he could stop the gun shot, a sharp pain pierced through my chest as a bright light flew toward me. “NO!!” He screamed again as I fell to the floor; dropping my ray gun onto the dry and hot ground beneath my feet and clenching my chest where my heart was as I went down.

My eyes forcefully closed as my breathing started to pick up, and I soon felt hands grip my shoulders and shake me a little after the sound of a shot that I knew came from Party. My head started to throb, and my stomach turned like I was going to be sick... But somehow, it felt like it was never going to come out.

“P-P-Party...?” I whimpered, trying to open my heavy eyelids to reveal the red-haired Killjoy in front of me, but I started to panic a little when they refused to open and every sound around me began to echo within my throbbing head.
“It’s alright, Ghoul... Just breathe, okay? It’ll all be okay!” He tried comforting me, but when his touch disappeared, I suddenly felt alone and lost in the dark. After a few minutes my eyes finally decided to open, and my heart literally skipped a painful beat when I realised what was happening; as I was crouched on the floor, Party was standing in front of me shooting any Dracs that even had a chance to look at us, yet alone get the chance to hurt one of us.

“P-Party...” I breathed, and hundreds of thoughts that never occurred to me before flowed into my head. He cares... He really cares... I thought. ...But why...? I mean, sure I’ve helped him in lots of little problems before like sneaking out from Dr. D when we were little... But it was never as serious as this... Maybe he- No... No! I can’t think of something like that! God, what are you thinking, Frank! Get your head together! It’s only a friend-save-friend situation!

Suddenly another ray shot made me wake up from my day dreaming state, and when I realised that the shot hadn’t came from Party’s ray gun, I automatically looked up to him and was surprised and shocked when I noticed that he had been shot a little on the edge of his arm.

“P-Party!” I shrieked, and I saw Kid look over at us when he heard me.
“Shhh, Ghoul,” Party whispered, obviously in pain a little. “I’m fine. It’s just a little injury...” He then crouched to the floor in front of me though to duck for another laser beam coming his way, and without thinking, I grabbed my ray gun after trying to face my pain, and I stood up quickly – holding my chest with my free hand – to make any remaining Dracs around us back off after standing in front of Party. “Ghoul! No!” He protested, but I ignored his plea and continued to fight off any unwanted people. “Ghoul...! Please...!” He shouted even louder, and I suddenly felt two arms embrace me from behind. I felt my cheeks redden a little, but still, I ignored him and continued to protect both of us. I then felt his grip tighten around me, and everything started to blur as my legs began to give way. “Ghoul?! GHOUL!!” Party shrieked, and as I closed my eyes to fall into a deep sleep, I felt Party fall beneath me before rolling us over and getting on top of me with his hand holding mine against my chest. “GUYS!! HELP!!” I heard Party scream to Jet and Kid, before I finally slipped away.

Party Poison’s POV
I held the limp body that was Fun Ghoul in my free arm as the other held where he had been shot on his chest, and as his head dropped back behind my wrist I swear I almost passed out there and then.

“Ghoul...?” I whispered, nudging him a little, but with no response. I knew there was no chance in hell of him replying until he got looked at properly – and by properly, I mean by Dr. D looking over him and doing as much as he could – so I looked over at my brother who was trying as hard as he possibly could to stop any other Dracs from approaching us, but he was struggling as Jet was focusing on the ones that came towards himself and Kid. I must have had a panicked expression on my face – God, who could blame me if my closest non-relative has just most probably died here in my arms – as Kid quickly glanced over and changed his own expression from what looked like anger or determination, to down-right shocked.

Kobra Kid’s POV
As I exchanged looks to my broken brother who was crouched in front of Ghoul with his arms around him, I realised that every decision from here would be up to me. I racked my brain for any chances of escaping safely, and sure enough, one came to me as I shot down a couple of Dracs. I backed up against Jet like before, and turned my head to him a little without losing sight of my brother and Ghoul and any Dracs that tried going up to them.

“How’s Ghoul?” Jet asked, also not looking my way.
“He’s down, but Party’s with him... I need to get to the Trans Am to the radio so I can contact Dr. D!” I explained in the simplest way, and Jet nodded.
“I got ya covered, I’ll keep watch on Party and Ghoul as much as I can too, but I’m sure Party will be able to cover for himself for a minute or two. Just be quick!” He replied, and I nodded as I darted for the Trans Am parked not too far from us all on the top of the dirt covered hill.

When I reached it, I quickly opened the bulletproof door and shut it before catching a quick breath. I was safe in here as long as no Dracs came up here, so I estimated a time of around about five minutes until I had to get back. I glanced down at Jet and Party with Ghoul, and when I knew that they were okay with fighting away the Dracs, I picked the transmitter and switched it on to speak into it.

“Dr. D! Its Kobra Kid here in Zone 4, Ghoul’s down and Party won't be able to hold up for a long period of time – We need backup or a distraction to get away now!” I almost yelled, and when I received a reply, I sighed in relief.
“This is Dr. Death-Defying contacting Kobra Kid in Zone 4, how many Draculoids are there?” He asked through the radio, and I quickly looked out of the mud stained window to roughly count them all.

“There’s at least fifty more of them, but more just keep appearing out of nowhere!”
“Right, I’ll send over Show Pony now to create a distraction whilst you Killjoys get out of there. I’ll have him bring over my spare wheelchair for Ghoul, and you get out of there as quickly as possible and return to the Diner. Is that alright?”
“Perfect! I’ll go inform the others now.” I smiled; at least there was a chance of getting away.
“Alright, good like sunshine!” He laughed, and I turned off the radio before jumping out of the Trans Am with my ray gun in my hand before shutting the door and running down to join the others again.

I first went to inform Party, and he looked like he was holding up quite well for now. He kept a firm grip on his best friend whilst shooting away at the Dracs, and he didn’t look like he was going to give in any time soon.

“Party!” I exclaimed, “Show Pony’s on his way, we’re getting out of here!”
“Sounds good to me!” He replied, “When will he be here?”
“Probably in about five minutes – You know how he drives!” I laughed, shooting a Drac as Party turned to shoot some others approaching.
“Good point; What about Ghoul?” He asked, looking down at the lifeless body.
“He’s bringing a wheelchair for him; I’ll help you load him in the Trans Am. I just need to tell Jet, are you alright here?”
“I’m fine; just quickly go tell him what’s happening!” He instructed, and I nodded before running over to Jet. When did I become the messenger?
“Jet, we’re getting out of here! Get ready for Show Pony!”
“Show Pony? When and what’s happening?” He asked, and I sighed before explaining the whole situation again.

Party Poison’s POV
I watched Kid as he sprinted through the laser beams to explain what was about to happen to Jet, but my head quickly turned back to the Dracs when I realised how close they were getting.

Please get here fast, Show Pony... Ghoul needs help now! I thought to myself as Ghoul still refused to respond to anything that was happening around us. I couldn’t help but think of the worst case scenarios; What if we never made it back to the Diner? What if he never wakes up? What if his life has already came to an end, just by protecting me when I could have easily protected myself?

I guess I'll just have to hope for the best; for all of us...
