Chapter 15

...I hear Frank let out a loud breath behind us. He sounds... Disappointed?

Gerard's POV

I am 100% positive that these are the absolute worst three hours in my whole life. My legs feel like they are made of cotton and are completely out of my control, and the only way they show they are even there is the sharp, cutting pain I feel in my heels every time I take a step. I probably have a blister, and I just hope mom packed some plasters in my bag. We were actually supposed to have them in our backpacks, but I just thought 'fuck it', and Ballash will kill me if he notices my limp. Or just give me a pack of plasters. It's still better not to risk though.

The only thing which is making this hike somewhat better is Diego, who hasn't shut up for more than five minutes since our little conversation with Frank. It's kind of entertaining. I am not sure if his life is really that interesting or he's just making stuff up, but I don't really care as long as it's funny. For example he has this story about a man, who Diego thought was about 30ish, who kept following him around everywhere. He waited for Diego to come out of school, rode the bus with him and everything. He even rented an apartment opposite his house. One evening he tried to grab Diego by the arm when he was walking his dog in the park, so Diego ran and called the cops. They caught the guy and arrested him, and it turned out he actually wanted to rape Diego and possibly kill him; he said he hadn't made up his mind about the last part yet.

I am not sure how it's funny, but I haven't laughed so hard since I got on the plane to Austria. I'd never laugh at anything as serious as a rape or a murder, after all I am a rather decent person, but the way Diego told it, it was the funniest shit in the universe. Maybe it was because of the way he was speaking- his voice was almost inaudible, strangled with his own laughs, it was contagious. Maybe it was a hysterical laugh caused by fear and a possible trauma from the experience, and it probably was, so I decided to not deepen on the topic after he was done telling.

"I can't feel my fucking legs, I'm so tired," Diego breathes out, finishing the sentence with a whine.

"Language," Frank mutters from behind and I struggle to keep in a laugh. I turn away from Diego, muffling it into my fist and trying to make it look as if I'm coughing. Somehow I have a feeling that if he sees me laughing he'll tease me again, which I'm definitely not looking forward to. It's weird, I feel kind of fluttered when he talks about me being with Frank, since that means he thinks I have a chance with him, but in the back of my mind I know he's just joking.

Ballash said that we are actually very close to the hotel, but you can't see anything because of the trees. The branches are almost completely blocking out the sky, and it's a bit chilly even though the sun is shining like crazy. We are walking down an asphalt road, and it looks extremely out of place, since it's literally going through a deep forest. Every couple of meters there are signs like BEWARE OF WILD DEERS or BEWARE OF WILD BOARS for the drivers, but we haven't seen a single car yet.

I always thought it's easier to walk downwards than upwards, but now I'm starting to understand just how wrong I was. We've been walking down this hill for about 30 minutes now, and my knees hardly bend.

"Frank? How long is it till the hotel?" Diego asks, turning around to look at Frank who is still walking behind us. It seems like he's expecting us to talk to him, since he got one earphone out of his ear almost in the beginning of the hike.

"Honestly, I have no idea, I've never been here before," he replies. "We should just trust Ballash that it's no more than 15 minutes," he gives us a reassuring smile, but Diego isn't satisfied.

"Ok, estimate,"

"15 minutes," Frank says instantly.

"You aren't estimating," Diego narrows his eyes. "You are just repeating what Ballash said,"

"Yeah, that's cause I've never been here," Before Diego has a chance to say anything else, with a swift motion Frank puts the second earphone in his ear.

***
Time Lapse: Lunch time

The promised 15 minutes turned into 30 because of some kid who blacked out from exhaustion. Surprisingly it wasn't Rodrick. The guy was Bulgarian, and apparently this was the first time he's done anything as physical as this. His name is Dragomir, which is probably the coolest name you can have because it reminds me of dragons, and I'm kind of jealous. Gerard and Dragomir don't even stand close. Gerrrraaard... But Mom has said more than once that her first choice was Yaroslavl (that was the name of a Russian boyfriend she had in college), so Gerard will do. And Gee sounds kind of nice too, so I probably shouldn't complain.

They are giving us schnitzel for lunch, and it actually tastes quite decent, much better than I expected. The only problem is that for some reason I feel full, as if I just ate, even though I only had a small bowl of cereal about four hours ago. I feel sick from just looking at the food.

I sit, absent mindedly staring into space, when a hand lands on my shoulder, waking me up.

Believe it or not, I checked back with this story pretty often. And if writing the endings to your other stories sounds like the right thing to do, go for it! :D
