Just Think Happy Thoughts

Frank got up from my bed we were sitting on for a while and walked over to the far corner of my room. He gaped at an acoustic guitar sitting in front of him.

"This is..." he looked closer at the guitar. "Yeah no mistake about it. This was your father's wasn't it? The exact one he used for... the last song."

" Yes" I affirmed in a hushed tone.

"Do you ever play it?" he asked me.

"I haven't played it since before it happened, but I have another guitar that I use downstairs" I told him.

"Yeah that makes sense. I would treasure it too" he said. All of a sudden I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket. It was Gerard calling.

"Gee what's up?" I said into the phone. He asked what I was up to and I told him I was with Frank at my house. Before I could suggest to him to meet up somewhere he said he was on his way with Mikey and hung up.

"Is Gee coming over?" Frank asked.

"Yeah. Fuck. It was enough telling you how will I explain it to him" I whined.

"Kai don't worry, I'll take care of it. You know I think he had an idea anyway. I mean, I knew the whole time. They can't be that oblivious can they?" Frank said. I shrugged my shoulders.

"Wait! You knew the whole time!? Why didn't you say something!" I yelled at him.

"Well why didn't YOU say something! I did it because I knew you obviously didn't want us to know. At least not yet. Anyway when they get here just let me explain everything if you don't want to" he offered. I sighed but shook my head.

"No it's okay Frankie. I'll do it." Just as I said that the doorbell rang. I went downstairs and opened the door to a very smiley Gerard and Mikey. "Well you guys look awfully cheerful."

"And you... don't" Gerard said as he took his hand and caressed my cheek. I flinched at his touch. His eyes narrowed at me. "Your eyes are puffy whats up?"

"Shit Gee's right. Was Frank being an asshole? He can say some pretty insensitive shit sometimes. Boy needs to learn to think before he sp-"

"Mikey no. Frankie has been the complete opposite of an ass. Come in guys. I have some explaining to do" I told them. I stepped to the side of the door to let them passed me. I ushered them up the stairs and into my room. Their reactions were more or less the same as what Frank's had been a few hours prior. As I began to explain to them about my true identity Frank came over and placed a hand reassuringly on my shoulder. I looked over at him and flashed him a small smile then continued my story. A few minutes later Gerard and Mikey were standing there dumfounded. The silence was broken by Gerard.

“Now I realize why you amazed me when I first met you" he said.

"Gee what are you talking about?" Mikey asked him .

"Well, that day in art class I was beyond frustrated because I had long lost my inspiration to draw. But when I looked up and saw Kairi for the first time I saw something in those emerald eyes. All of a sudden I had inspiration to draw again. And I guess I knew her in the back of my mind. I thought I had seen her face somewhere before. And I did, in Seth" he explained.

“Wow yeah. You do have a lot of Seth’s features Kairi” Mikey said as he studied my face.

“Um I don’t know what to say” I stammered. I blushed as I realized everyone’s eyes were on me.

“Kai your dad was a legend. Oh and he was hot. And I haven’t met your mom yet but judging by these pictures she’s pretty smokin too” Frank blurted out. Mikey shot him an exasperated look. Gerard just giggled at the scene.

“I think what Frankie is trying to say Kai is you’re pretty hot too, am I right?” Gerard said. He looked over at Frank with an evil grin on his face. I almost choked at the words. Frank turned his head away from us so no one could see his face.

“Wait a minute Gee, did you just embarrass Frank Iero? Is that even possible” Mikey teased. Gerard still had the same smirk on his face, obviously feeling triumphant. I, on the other hand, was also feeling embarrassed about the situation so I decided to get serious again.

“Wait a minute, but guys, what does this mean? Does this change our friendship?” I asked them. They all looked over at me.

“”Well of course it does Princess” Gerard joked as he bowed down to me. Frank clocked him on the head.

“Don’t be insensitive, jerk” Frank said to Gerard. He got up and raised an eyebrow at Frank.

“Wow, Frank, being all noble. What’s gotten into you?” Mikey asked.

“It’s a touchy subject, that’s all. Don’t be jerks about it” Frank demanded. I smiled at his actions.

“Frank it’s alright. I’m glad I can talk so openly about this now. I’m glad you guys can joke about it. This means things are the same, right?” I asked. They shook their heads in agreement.

“Of course Kai, and don’t worry your secret’s safe with us, right guys?” Gerard assured. He pulled me into a hug. They agreed and before I knew it we were in a group hug. As I stood there surrounded by my new friends, I smiled like I never have before. I was truly happy in that moment. Once we pulled apart I went over to my record player and put on Ashes to Ashes. We listened to them as we shared stories about them. A few minutes later my door swung open. Jake stood in the doorway, displeasure emanating from his existence.

“Could you turn that off? You know I don’t like this crap” he spat. I saw the guys’ faces drop at what he had just said. Anger began to stir inside of me.

“Where’s mom?” I asked him as I went over to the record player to turn off the music.

“She’s downstairs. And who are these boys? What are they doing here?” he demanded to know. Before I was able to come back with a witty remark my mom appeared in the doorway.

“Oh hi dear! Are these your friends you’ve been telling me about!? It’s finally nice to meet you all!” she exclaimed.

Oh and it’s nice to meet you too!” Frank said, a bright smile on his face. “I’m-“

“Oh let me guess! Frank!” my mom interrupted. “Kairi did mention you were the short one.” Frank looked over at me unamused. I face palmed and Gerard and Mikey bursted into laughter.

“And those idiots laughing would be Gerard and Mikey” I said as I pointed them out.

“It’s nice to meet you” they both said between giggles. My mom stayed for a bit to chat and then she went downstairs to prepare dinner. Sometime amidst the introductions Jake walked out without a care.

“Kai that Jake guy is such an asshole. I wanna sock him one” Frank admitted.

“Be my guest” I laughed.

“Yeah but your mom seems really nice” Mikey said.

“And hot” Gerard teased. I rolled my eyes and threw a light punch at Gerard’s shoulder.

“Does he seriously not let you listen to your own father’s band though?” Frank asked, a look of concern spread across his face.

“We’ve had countless fights about it. When my mom’s around he knows he can’t do anything about it, because she of course, loves them just as much as I do” I explained. I walked back over to my record player and put Ashes to Ashes back on, not caring what Jake had to say about it later. As the guys chatted, I reminisced about the day we had and smiled. The bonds between us would only grow stronger now that I could really be myself.
