Give Me Blood

XVIII

Gerard's mouth fell open. He was shocked.
Then he started laughing, out of relief. He had been so scared of Lindsey's reaction when he told her that it was over between them, and then she did just that. It's like a huge weight was suddenly lifted off his shoulders.
Jamia looked at him across the table like he had just lost his mind. Gerard tried to get his act together and stop laughing, but it took him a minute, he honestly felt so good right now. He smiled at Lindsey.
'This was not a joke', she said cautiously.
'I hope so', Gerard replied, 'you have no idea how awesome this is, though. I was just about to say the same thing but I was so scared that I would hurt you. You still mean a lot to me'.
'Yeah, you too', she sighed 'But it's for the best. It's just not the way it used to be'. Gerard nodded in agreement.
'I'm in love with somone else', he admitted, 'I thought that it's not fair to string you along.'
'I know', she said, 'It's Frank'.
'What!?', Gerard spluttered.
'Jamia told me', Lindsey explained.
'But...', Gerard was at a loss for words, 'how, how does she know?' '
She has eyes', Lindsey chuckled 'You know, you should tell him about your feelings'.
'I can't do that. I can't risk our friendship', Gerard answered decidedly.
'But Jamia says that he feels the same way about you. The exact same way!', she emphasized 'and she knows what she's talking about. Not only has she seen it, but he also told her'.
This had Gerard speechless. Was it true? Why would the women lie about it? Especially Lindsey, she really only wanted for him to be happy, he knew that much. But what if this was all just one big misunderstanding? Then his life would go down the drain. He wouldn't have Lindsey and worst of all, he wouldn't have Frank, the one person he needed the most.
But if it really was the truth, then he could have everything he had ever dreamed of but never thought would come true. He could be really happy together with Frank, the person that meant most to him.
But it was still a risky decision to make. If he was to talk about his feelings to Frank and it'd turn out to be a big hoax, he couldn't ever look at him again and that would break him completely. But if Frank would miraculously confess his love for Gerard, then he'd be the happiest man on the entire planet.
He really needed to think about this some more.

When Jamia and Frank had arrived at a small café and had ordered some breakfast, Jamia began to put her plan into action by making her point bluntly.
'You know, you should really tell Gerard how you feel about him, I'm pretty sure that he feels the same way', she said, casually sipping on her coffee.
'I can't and you know that', Frank argued.
'Yes you can. He isn't with Lindsey anymore, she is breaking up with him right now'
'What!?', Frank asked, shocked. 'That's perfect! He wanted to break up with her anyway, but he felt so guilty', Frank said, genuinely happy that Gerard would be alright.
But then his face fell, as he realized that Gerard was free now. Free to run straight into the arms of this other person he was in love with, that again, wasn't him.
'Do you know why he wanted to break up with Lindsey?'
'Because he loves somebody else.'
'Exactly'
'that somebody being you '
'unfortunately not'
'How do you know that? Has he told you?'
'He hasn't told me who it is...'
'Because he's just as scared as you are. I think you're both just scared to lose each other. But you don't have to if you'd just have a honest talk about it for once', Jamia cut him off.
This silenced him effectively for a few minutes. What if Jamia was actually right? What if Gerard really loved HIM? He would have everything he had ever wanted. But this was so highly unlikely.
They've been close friends forever, wouldn't they have realized it before? This was all so confusing.
But a lot less painful that thinking that Gerard loved some unknown stranger.
It might all just be wishful thinking, though.
And then he'd confess to Gerard, but he'd just laugh and introduce him to his new boyfriend.
And that would be the end of them, the end of him.
'As long as you can't get him to confess first, I can't risk it', he said out loud.
'But what if Gerard thinks the exact same thing? Then nothing will ever happen', Jamia retorted.
'And that would still be better than losing him for good', was Frank's final statement.
They payed for their breakfast and then left to return to the bus.
Jamia had failed her mission, Frank had considered the possibility that Gerard might be in love with him, but he didn't quite believe it. Gerard, on the other hand was a bit more convinced. He had no reason to believe that either Lindsey or Jamia were lying.
